Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Rahul Gandhi had said that his party will bat on the frontfoot in Uttar Pradesh. Since then the party has faced two debacles in India's electorally most crucial state. Ahead of the 2024 election, the Congress party has joined hands with the Samajwadi Party to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi led juggernaut. But in the crucial state, the Congress cadre and its alliance partner, barely three weeks before the start of polling, are battling confusion and anxiety. There is no signal from the Congress top brass on which member of the Gandhi-Nehru family will contest from Amethi and Rae Bareli, their traditional family pocket-boroughs. There are rumours that Rahul Gandhi, whose candidature has been announced from Wayanad, may skip Amethi, the seat he lost to BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. With no clarity on whether the Congress will field Priyanka Gandhi from Rae Bareli, the seat vacated by Sonia Gandhi, who is now a Rajya Sabha member, the I.N.D.I.A grouping is worried that in the crucial state, the absence of the Gandhis from the contest, will be the worst possible political signal.
