She got canceled because she expressed what she thought and felt about the renewal of that series? Geez, people are insane. I'm having a hard time understanding where the issue lies there. You go, Constance! You're a blessing, not just in AsAm community, but all Asian communities in general.

The way she expressed what she thought was pretty disrespectful (posting on the shows socials in multiple places about her disappointment), but ultimately it was a mistake she apologized for and regretted. Plus given what she was experiencing on the show with harassment, very understandable. She's not a bad person for it, people make mistakes.

I don't think people understand how powerful SHAME is in some societies, especially Asian and Eastern cultures. We are conditioned to believe our worth is defined by how honorable we are in the eyes of our families and communities, and if we do anything that they don't approve of, we are shamed, we are threatened with being shamed or bringing shame to our people. And it can in fact drive someone to suicide or to consider it. Just because there is no physical harm or threat to someone, or their problem is not medically diagnosed as mental illness and they're not directly being mentally and emotionally abused by someone, does not mean that what they are going through is not serious. People who grew up in more free western cultures don't understand this. Update: Wow, I just saw all the likes and comments from two weeks ago and I’m so glad if this comment makes you feel heard, and if it could in a small way help anyone overcome this illusion of shame that we were conditioned into. I also feel so heard myself from all your reactions and comments, I did not expect that, although I know many people go through that. I have myself had to internalize and process this since 2010 when i went through something, which would seem simple and manageable to people outside my middle eastern culture (and generally for people in the west), but for me it caused me so much mental and emotional pain that was suppressed, that I developed eczema rashes for about six years afterwards, and that’s when i realized the power of shame. Now I see that the thing that I felt shame about is actually not something to be ashamed of, so much that you might be really shocked if you knew what it was, and it didn’t even have to do with anything that might be considered promiscuous or sexually rebellious, not even close. But it is blown out of proportion by many people in my community and the society where I grew up. It took me years to heal and to get rid of feelings of shame, and realize it was all put into my head by other people, that it was passed down through generations. Because once i reached a point where this pain was crippling me, causing me depression and anxiety, I almost snapped and that’s when i decided ENOUGH, other people’s opinions of me are not worth this pain. That pain gave me perspective at the same time, and it sounds strange but it was what allowed me to overcome insecurities and shame that i realized i had, not just since 2010, but way before that while growing up. What also helped me was to take care of my health and diet and learning to say no and not suppress my feelings. While I was healing and starting to feel better about myself, I found a book titled “When the Body Says No” by Gabor Mate and it really resonated with my experience. Edit: I also want to add that I agree with someone else’s comment - that western culture has its problems and downsides, and asian/eastern cultures have a lot of positive things, such as in my case, my family will band together to support my professional and creative goals for example. And also that this can happen everywhere and that it is mainly certain fractions of society. For example, not all the other people my age who i went to school with and who grew up in the same country and society went through this conditioning into shame, because their families, extended families, and social circles around them were different. At that point in 2010 when I went through that situation, the brainwashing was mainly coming from certain individuals on my mom’s side of the family, and because they had so much influence over my mom, it affected our life, and she also had to suffer from their comments, over many years prior to 2010. But i know that she couldn’t be supportive of me because she was trying to do her best with what she knew and how she was herself conditioned, because although she and i disagree on certain things and she’s much more conservative than my generation, she was always still ahead of her family. Thank you all and much love ❤️🙏

But what did she say that was worthy of shame? I hear you, and I agree that those of us on the outside do not get what it is like on the inside, but to 'hang' her for the comment she made, most of it misunderstood and inconsequential, doesn't say much for that people! Why coddle such detrimental thinking? Seems like the people would literally be happy if she ended her life! Time to change that kind of thinking! Nothing honorable about it!

I think rather than simply not being what Asian people want her to be, it’s more about immediately shitting on Fresh off the Boat (the show that got her cast in Crazy Rich Asians) after she couldn’t get out of her shooting schedule commitment. Then she watched fellow CRA actresses Gemma Chan and Awkwafina go on to star in The Eternals and The Farewell & Shang Chi respectively… She went on to play a supporting character in Hustlers, which was not a bad film but certainly not a Marvel blockbuster. The moral of the story is don’t kick out the rungs of the ladder you climbed up to get to where you are. It seems like she was so eager to climb that she was left holding neither the step up that she thought was waiting for her (Hollywood studio roles) or the step she thought was going to still be there beneath her (Asian genre films & shows). Within a matter of years, Simu Liu and Awkwafina started in the first Asian-led Marvel movie Shang Chi, Parasite won the Oscar and Chloe Zhao won an Oscar for Nomadland. If she had acted gracious and patient, she probably would have been right alongside her co-stars on Crazy Rich Asians today. I believe she should get more opportunities for lead roles but she did a lot of damage to her reputation in the Asian film community with her sense of entitlement.

I don’t think cancel culture is stupid. People have the right to not support people that don’t align with their beliefs as long as those same folks don’t enforce their beliefs on others as well. But I will say if someone makes a mistake they should be afforded the right to also redeem themselves with actions (volunteering for a specific organization that helps folks they were being disparaging against, donating money for a while, serving jail time etc.) a simply apology doesn’t work. It’s just an apology for getting caught and facing backlash. Now depending on the issue at hand, even a genuine apology, volunteer or/and jail won’t cut it such as murder, rape/sexual assault or anyone especially children etc . So cancel away

You just have to go back in history from "communists" being cancelled/blacklisted in the media and Hollywood to the 80s Religious Right. Now they are trying to cancel women from making important decisions about their bodies. So social media "cancelling" is maybe new in this type of format (online) but it certainly wasn't created by young folks/gen z or millennials. Just a bit of history and context for those younger. While I know this is a huge part of the Asian culture....this so also true of some other cultures, religions, generations. Many of us were raised to self edit, modify, change, to fit a "mold". Shame is a huge perpetuating issue. The core wound of shame is one that is hard to heal, because to look at it, is to want to deny/deflect/avoid...vs look at it and have self compassion. It's hard to have self compassion and not self shame, when we weren't given compassion, and often shamed for so much. To be taught to self betray, to self abandon, puts a person at risk for so many unhealthy relationships and situations. It is a high risk for considering suicide...as suicide is the epitome of self abandonment. We need to learn to encourage people to be who they are, accept them, and support them. We also need to learn to heal ourselves, turn towards ourselves, learn who we really are, getting rid of self doubt...developing a way to not take things personally, an ability to have self agency and empowerment.

I agree! I wish we could all know the name of that producer, AND the actress who said she's a blight on the asian community. The fact that she would probably LOOVE to say it out loud, but is holding it in, is just proof that she isn't some flippant person who says negative things out loud all the time. She knows it would be really hurtful to those peoples' careers, so she is keeping quiet. She deserves to be commended for that!

I’m just so glad she’s doing better. She is one of my favorite actresses. Her tweets use to make me laugh so hard before I left Twitter. I use to get so excited and cheer on whenever she clap back at people and call things out. That producer is so wrong for what he did. And I hope she knows that what he said isn’t true, she did not get that role because of him. She got that role because she’s an incredible actress and deserved it. That character could not be played by anyone else but her. She is the reason that show was successful not that toxic abusive producer. Without her I can’t imagine that show being as successful as it was. Period. Jessica the character is what made it entertaining, good and relatable, and that was all Constance Wu. I watched for Constance and millions of people watched to see Constance act as the character Jessica. That producer is an abuser, and what abusers do is make you feel small, not talented, and not capable of anything, but clearly it was all about his insecurities because she’s more talented than he could ever be. He tried to take her power by making her feel small because he didn’t want her to know she was more powerful than him.

To those who aren't familiar, the concept of preventing "losing face" is a _huge_ deal in Asian countries, especially in China. Being an Asian I am a big fan of the fresh off the boat series. I felt betrayed when I heard she hated the show. How could she hate a show that got her acting career started? The ungratefulness is what got me. But I didn't realize how much the criticism shattered her as a person. She definitely doesn't deserve being treated like that. You know, the asian community should stand up together rather than subjecting her as a scapegoat of the racism and discrimination on us.

She could be grateful and still resent her contract. Imagine you get a good job, and you do well in it. Bigger companies see your work, and offer you opportunities that are more lucrative, interesting, and prestigious than your current job. Your job has come to an end, so you gladly engage with these new positions. And then your old job comes back and says NEVERMIND, we actually are keeping you on, and you’re contractually required to stay with us. No wonder she was pissed. The job was a good start, but after a few years it was holding her back.

I sort of hate how people expect celebrities to be 100% grateful for the shows/movies that launched them into stardom. Agreed. The whole “need to be grateful” thing is very toxic. We aren’t living their lives and a lot of stars end up dying young or experiencing great trauma because of the negatives of the job.
