Controlling Yamaha MODX+ with Behringer FCB1010 foot controller

Hi there all and welcome to a series of videos on the FCB1010 and how it can be used to control your MODX (in fact it can control most any synth !).
In this video I'll demo what it can do and in 2 follow up videos how to set it all up. So, stay tuned !

Hi, that was great! Another MIDI nerd. I am a drummer using edrums since 2019 and grabbed a FCB1010. I always became jealous of our guitarist who used this thing to go through his amp presets back in 2014. I switch hihat to cowbell to stack or change the MIDI routing through Cantabile 4.0. Anyway did you try to play notes, like kind of a bass pedal?

Hi - haven't got round to to playing notes with it yet, but its on the list - along with triggering chords 🙂 (and planning a future video for that)

Great explanation of the controller. I have some questions please. I had to stop playing saxophone a very long time ago because of multiple joint issues. I have a Yamaha WX-5 MIDFI wind controller, with VL70m tone generator. If I had a pedal for my foot to replace what I do with my jaw and foot switches to replace octave up and down, I might be able to play my wind controller again. Being able to add in playing with filters or loops is exciting. How would I hook this all up? I can get a wireless MIDI dongle for the WX-5 as the WX-5 can be powered from 6 AAAs. I have zero experience with DAWs, I'm just starting to mess around with GarageBand on my iPad and I have a MacBook Pro. I'd ideally like to use the WX-5 as a MIDI controller with (hopefully nothing more complex than) GarageBand (for now). I'd appreciate doing that with my lovely earbuds, which when used with iPad GarageBand has no noticeable latency. I'm also wondering if there's enough space to use both pedals simultaneously, one per foot? Would I be ok operating the FCB1010 sat at armchair height? Many thanks for any advice from anyone.

Hi, not familiar with WX-5 or VL70m, however if for example the wx-5 transmits cc messages which I assume it does then you should be able to control/assign these functions on the FCB1010. Also in answer to some of the other points, the pedals are quite large - so yes you could use both at the same time and, using the FCB1010 sitting down would work fine. The only issue would be performing pitch bends, which as far as I understand are performed using the mouthpiece. The trouble is with pitch bend, is it isn’t a standard CC message and its values don’t run from 0-127 like standard CCs. Also it starts at a ‘mid-point’, e.g a pitch bend wheel on a synth springs back to the mid point so you can bend up or down and I assume pitch bend operates similar to this on the wx-5. Not sure what the solution to the pitch bend issue is, but the FCB1010 should be able to do pretty much everything you else you need alongside your wx5/vl70m and GarageBand. Hope that helps a little 🙂

PS There is a little box from a company called MIDI Solutions (I have few of their boxes) called a ‘Pedal Controller’ which you can program to enable an expression pedal to control pitch bend (costs about £100 GBP) It may be that this could work with the FCB1010 to enable pitch bending, or it could work with a separate expression pedal for pitch bend, leaving the pedals on the FCB1010 to control other parameters. Even with this box, it’s best set to either bend up or bend down, as otherwise it’s very difficult to find the mid point on an expression pedal to get back to the original pitch. Might be worth emailing the guys at MIDI solutions to see if this could be a possible solution ? 🙂

@@splootyvision Thank you so much for replying! I made a typo, the WX-5 is MIDI, it uses CCs, sorry if I caused a misunderstanding. The WX-5 does actually have a thumb wheel that can be assigned to either pitch bend or modulation, it's just really awkward to use when playing. You've given me an inspiration: pitch bend on a sax really is more about vibrato, so just a vibrato effect on a pedal should be enough for me there, control intensity with pedal position. I'm not sure I would have realised this without you, thank you so much. I think my next step is to spend some time with my WX-5, I think I can set it to make noise without blowing in it. If my hands are happy holding it and still work well enough to practise, then I'll look into hooking all the equipment up. If I can't, then maybe it's time to sell it, along with the tone generator. I'll be sure to watch your set up video, if I get the FCB1010. Thanks again.

@@splootyvision I missed your PS, as I was replying to you. Thanks so much for letting me know about the pedal controller, kind of you to take the time. As my other message says, I now realise it's not really pitch bend I was after, but a vibrato effect.

Can one swap favourite sounds/splits in the Roland Juno DS using this pedalboard?

Yes, you can 🙂. You just need to know the MSB, LSB and PC numbers for the patches (which are all listed in the ‘parameter manual’ for the DS). The FCB1010 can store 10 banks of 10 presets so you could effectively program it to trigger up to 100 different presets on your DS. For each preset on the FCB1010 you’ll need to program the CC messages as ‘00’ and ‘32’ which are the CC values for MSB and LSB and then assign the relevant values to these CCs as shown in the DS patch list and then program a ‘PC’ (program change) value, again as listed in the patch list. Then when you hit a footswitch on the FCB1010 it will load the relevant preset sound on your DS according to the MSB,LSB and PC values it receives. @@splootyvision I used "Midi Read" software to visualize the FAV-2 Botton settings for my FAV-Split sounds, and this is what it appeared [all 3 messages for that button]: - Controller Bank Select:85 channel 16 value 85 HEX BF 00 85 - Cintroller Bank select [fine]: 0 channel 16, value 0, HEX BF 20 00 - Program Change:2 Channel 16, Hex CF 02 I have no idea as to whether Hex values should be programmed in the FCB 1010 or how, as its software only has MSB and LSB values. How would that be translated into the FCB 1010?

@@thephoenixchant In that example the MSB is 85, the LSB is 0 and the PC value is 2, those are what you need to program into the FCB1010. Believe I sent a reply on a previous comment of yours the other day with details of how you program those values into the FCB1010 🙂

@@wichischannel2910 Hi, think I mentioned that in one of the other videos, but in case I didn't: In simple terms you just need a midi cable from the MIDI Out of the FCB1010 to the MIDI In on the MODX and then a standard jack cable from the 'Foot Switch 1' on the back of the FCB 1010 to the 'Assignable Switch' Input on the back of the MODX. You can then program the FCB manually and it will 'talk' to the MODX. If you want to use the software editors then you need to plug the MIDI In & Out from the FCB into the opposing MIDI In & Out on a MIDI interface so it can talk with your PC (my audio interface has midi ports that serve this purpose). Once you've loaded stuff to the FCB you can then disconnect it from the PC and re-establish the connections to the synth. Hope that helps, thanks.

Hi, depends really on what parts of the KS Pro you want to control, but from what I've read it gets very complicated (and above my pay grade 😂). The main problem would be that the FCB can't send MMC messages (MIDI machine control), which are used to trigger things like start, stop, record etc. There's probably a way of doing it with additional software and midi translators, but as I say would all get very complicated and not something I know how to resolve I'm afraid. Sorry couldn't help further.
