I built the first ever Cordless Tesla and did a 1600 Mile Road Trip without ever charging the car.
It just made perfect sense to me to adapt a power plant generator to my modified Model S Tesla and do a road trip.
This is the first version of the cordless Tesla which is burning gasoline to charge the car instead of the conventional plug-in charger.
The car not only charges itself while it's sitting and parked but also while driving the entire time.
Just for reference with the mpg number this car is almost 1000 horsepower all wheel drive, I didn't go into those details in the video because I didn't want to make it confusing.
This is not my typical video but I absolutely had to document my progress with my project here and share it with everybody.
To clarify I did have to stop for about 5 to 6 hours a day while the car continued to charge itself back up since it's using more energy driving then it's making.
All of those stops and lack of sleep is one of the reasons I was dead tired for almost the entire trip, some of those days I was so tired I could barely speak.
I also made sure to make a few stops along the way that I thought were pretty cool to make the video more exciting.
I'm curious to hear what everybody thinks in the comments below please don't hesitate to leave your opinion I think you are going to like what I have coming in the near future with this car.
Heres Part 2 of the Cordless Tesla.

"Full throttle". @@Iahusha777Iahuah Look at 0:45. That's a standard inverter generator setup. Based on the orange color, location of the fan vent at the top of the shroud, and yellow cap on the oil tube it is very likely a WEN GN875iX open frame inverter generator. Champion and others have similar generators from the same factory, but in different colors. Perhaps the wires were extended to hide the inverter module under the floor panel, although the original wires might even have reached unchanged. The only real modification was that the quiet stock muffler was replaced with the noise-enhancing megaphone muffler. The spring mount, shape, straps and rivets match the "carbon fiber" look mufflers sold on Amazon for $35-$45. From the timeline and screen displays in the video he was pretty clearly only charging while parked. He just plugged in a standard charge cable to the original generator receptacle and used that, without touching the car's software or electronics. My guess is that he dismounted the charging inlet and rotated it to face the trunk interior. Perhaps he used a relay to fake unplugging the cable, or a lever+bracket to unplug the J1772 connector slightly, but he might have simply gone to the back of the car to plug the cable into the repositioned inlet after he parked.

This project is awesome! Maybe use one of those small diesel engines from before (the go-kart) instead of the tiny gas engine. That way it would probably be quite a bit quieter as the engine wouldn’t be running at max all the time. That would be essentially exactly like a diesel electric locomotive on a train. I’m interested in how your generator interfaces with the charger circuits, since the car obviously doesn’t see that it’s charging.
@vevenaneathna
@vevenaneathna Рік тому
dont know much about teslas but i would imagine the regen brake circuit would be easiest to tap into. those are basically "generators" already. ya i think in order to get enough power from the small engine to barely brake even he was maybe outside of the most efficient rpm range of the engine. that usually doesnt overlap much with the power band. you can kind of see this from the significant change in fuel economy based on speed. the model S is more aerodynamic than that and shouldnt be effected so much at such low speeds unless it was really windy

I think because it does just always run at an efficient rpm and does not change that rpm all the time (breaking and accelerating the mass of the engine and running at not efficient rpms) Although my 2002 non hybrid gasoline Toyota does 33-40MPG in the city and even less on faster roads which is still better than the tesla :D (and a hybrid car would still be way better than this xD) But VW or BMW had a similar thing in their first electric vehicle as a 'range extender' that charged the battery when it gets low on charge. That jerry rigged setup is just like a diesel-electric-locomotive but with an underpowered engine and a huuuuge battery xD

The Tesla is roughly a 25-30 mpg (US) car by petrol to electricity conversion standards. It weighs 2 tonnes though so will have quite a bit of rolling resistance, and a similar sized petrol engine vehicle will use about the same. GM made a lot of effort to get the Volt working just right. The ICE was carefully selected to be quiet and efficient whilst producing enough power to keep up with average performance. I've always been fascinated by this engineering niche, and it is great to see someone tackle it in such a simplistic way.
