Professor Neil Price delivers the third of three lectures, September 27, 2012, focusing on the fundamental role that narrative, storytelling and dramatisation played in the mindset of the Viking Age (8th-11th centuries), occupying a crucial place not only in the cycles of life but particularly in the ritual responses to dying and the dead.

When he says that “nothing is random” in the theatrically conducted part, and one considers the amount of violence and death and gore, I wonder if Randall Carlson (and all the other guys promoting catastrophism and forgotten civilizations/ pre-history) is right. I came across a talk of Randall talking about the war of the Norse Gods with the Frost Giants (and a particular part of that story where two Frost Giants escaped for a while), where he interpreted this as a sort of climate history: the end of the last ice age and the two dips back into it at the Younger Dryas boundary. (btw: any chance that Odin’s one eye is the Great Red Spot / storm on the face of Jupiter? Is Odin identified with Jupiter? When I imagine Thor’s Hammer flying in an ellipse, I imagine an asteroid going in an ellipse (maybe even “thrown” by Jupiter or seemingly coming from his direction): thrown in the battle to end the Frost Giants (the ice age). In this 3 lectures I was wondering about the layers of the grave mounds: creating layers of earth above layers with the blood and bones of large animals (multiple horses and dogs) that get literally ripped to pieces, with their body-parts displaced: that’s like the layer from the extinction of the megafauna / the layer with all the mammoth bones. In the other story they even ripped the birds to pieces, and they hacked the horses to bits! (leaving no doubt that they died a violent death). - Then with the immolation: that’s got to leave a layer of ash. The scene that is left over seems rather cataclysmic to me. The bones of our forefathers intermingled with the bones of animals, their bodies buried under stones (that fell onto them from above?) and a layer of ash. If the whole theatrical setting in scene is like walking through a door which is a keyhole, maybe that’s remembering that the whole of human civilization once only barely survived / had to go through a bottleneck, the survivors walking through a symbolic keyhole of sorts, and the great beyond they are fixing their eyes on might have been the deep past, lying beyond an incredible traumatic / violent event. Our fate is fixed: all the layers of worlds that there might have been are going to end in flames one day. Also: from a modern perspective Ygdrassil certainly seems like the tree of life itself with all its branching, or even a symbol for the DNA that is in all of it (- heck there are even messengers in the mythical story, as there is messenger RNA in the unfolding of the biological story). I know: they knew nothing of this back then, but maybe the stories are older, and there was once knowledge that was encoded in myths and in legends long before our age of the world. P.S.: when he talked about one third of the wealth of the dead man being spent on the finest clothes before it goes up in flames, I think of one fifth of the land being destroyed by fire in the apocalypse/ the book of revelation: this is not the future - this is the past: when the old world went under, and a new world was born out of its ashes. I think that this is the core of a lot of religion: death and resurrection may seem about an immortal soul and an afterlife at first glance, but the truth is: we are already living in the afterlife of the civilizations that came before on this planet: death and resurrection already happened (maybe even more than once): after the cataclysm they rolled away the stone from the cave and came out again: the grave is empty (- as empty as the box in the pyramid) - human civilization still lived on. As Randall also taught: INRI to the layman meant “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” - but to the mystics and alchemists who had the (esoteric) knowledge it also meant “in fire gets the world renewed” - it’s stamped right there on the most important part of the most important story: just because religion changes, there still can be layers of meaning that transport the deeper / older story: the cross marks the spot. Sorry, I got carried away a bit.
@Stadtpark90

Even the burial in the boat (or the graves in the form of a boat) over the man in the ground from the generation before: maybe that’s a symbol for part of humanity surviving in a boat? (like Noah and the Deluge?). Then: the guys in the boat burial depicted as sleeping. That reminded me of Jesus sleeping in the boat during the storm. And this reminded me of the initiation rites of the Celtic Druids in Britain (according to Manly P. Hall “The secret teachings of all ages”): they were put alone in a boat on the ocean (- and they were also buried alive during another part of the initiation: for me it’s all remembering the same old story again and again: some of those who survived the cataclysm (the asteroid impact(s)?) might have been in caves under ground or on a boat on the sea). P.S.: the form of the keyhole-doors-stones even has a narrow part (a bottleneck) in its very shape: there is the narrow part in the history of mankind, in the history of civilization, before the history (and probably even the population numbers) got “wider” again, and the narrow part is pretty close to the top / the present, with a longer part of the story before the narrow bit. P.P.S: The story of the Dragonslayer: the dragon / the serpent etc. has to be overcome by the hero: Hercules had to kill two serpents while still in his crib! - It’s always the same: humankind overcoming the serpent / the dragon: that might be the asteroid ((or rather comet with the tail) -sometimes two headed, sometimes even more (might be the fragments / multiple impactors either in space or time). I think Randall Carlson is right with this: the details may differ from story to story, but the general theme is always the same. Edit: even the lance thrown over the dead could be a symbol for the asteroid/ comet. The ripped apart animals, the dead lying under a stone or two. The more I think of this, the clearer it gets: that is the cataclysmic drama in a still-life!

That's because you have genuine interest in the subject, and enthusiasm should never be subdued. Odin, Whom Wednesday is named after, is actually identified with two planets, three, if you count the Moon as a planet. Jupiter as you rightly point out, and also Mercury. Mercury giving us Mercredi, Wednesday, or Odins Day. The word Day itself coming from Deity, or God/Goddess. The Eye of Jupiter is something I had not considered myself, but Odin is surely the equivalent of both Shiva and Jehovah! Names of Gods do change a little regionally, but only by a very little! John for example is also Jan, Ian, Owen, Johannes etc. Same name different spelling. So; Eesa (Eswara/Osiris), Siva, Jiva, Jove, Jehovah and Jahweh. I hope you noticed the really subtle changes. I also feel inclined to direct you to ancient Babylonian texts. 'The Lost Book Of Enki', (audio version on UKposts) will help you fill in the gaps. The Enuma Elish is the original Creation Story. Adam and Eve. But although The Bible clearly borrows from this more ancient work, it also omits one very, very important fact. Adams first wife was Lilith/Lalitha. Lilith is The Goddess in Her Sexual Aspect. We get the word Lolita from Her. She is Venus, Dianna, Leda, Juno. She is Lucifer (The bringer of Light - think of Venus, the Morning Star). So the Names; Lalitha/Lilith is The Devi Yoni, a very important term. The Devi means Goddess, Yoni, is to put it delicately, a ladies part. So; Devi Yoni, Deyoni, Dianna, or Devi Juni, which gives us Juno and the month June. Yes, Devi is translated to Devil, and we get devious and divine from this ancient word. Satan, Sat An, actually translates from Babylonian as 'The Great Administrator'. It refers to Her Son. So The Devil (Devi) is Satan's (Abaalo/Apollo/Baals) Mother. The Bible mentions The Goddess using symbols only. They are Tree, Egg, Serpent, Dragon (this symbol applies to Satan too, so beware), Bride, Water, Fish and Shell. The Bible is fairly reliable, but some crafty changes and mistranslations make it hard to understand. These things should help. Norse Mythology is neither Norse or Mythogy! Its' roots are in Ancient Babylon and India. I hope that doesn't offend anyone. We All worship the same set of Gods/Goddesses, just under different names.

The admission of a lifetime: I was - once upon a long-long time ago - a guest at Ph.D. Niel Price's dissertation banquette in the very, very early years of my archaeology studies and I got a chance to speak with him têtê-à-têtê. And, yes, I made a complete ass of myself. Yeaps. This was way before I got a handle on how to handle your academy spirits (that is: how to survive the Flood of alcoholic beverages at academic events - especially when you're a (then) anorexic, weighing in at 105 lb...) I had no idea who I was talking to. We spoke in English which isn't my native language so if I were to guess: Niel spoke English. What the heck I was doing, no one knows... I had no idea how drunk I was because the alcohol had not yet fully hit me - it was more like randomly jabbing at me from the sidelines. I remember the ... ehrm ... conversation ... as ... ehm ... let's say "forced" on my part. On the part of Niel, my salvation all these years has been convincing myself that a: it didn't leave any memorable impression and/or b: I was just yet another young archaeologist drenched in alcohol (and in a party of say ten, there are at least a hundred of those ;) ). Anyway, the whole ordeal lasted about one cigarette before I successfully left the painful awkwardness that struck me like a wet bag of sand in the stomach in-between the as release-lieving as painful back-head jabbs of the alcohol. About 30 seconds later. In the staircase to the level below. The battle was over - the alcohol finally, to no-ones surprise- won. I'm not going to reveal the rest of the evening other than that it ended early, archaeologists are really nice and considerate people, I am cursed with the full recollection that comes from being blackout-impaired (though can't remember what happened mere minutes ago), and - finally - though regrettable, there are no regrets to be had (experience and teachings to learn from? Yes. Regrets? Pointless waste of time that would be better spent striving forward instead of dwelling on what can never change). But, I do SO wish I would one day have the chance to exchange a word (or a bunch) with Dr. Price again. I was a newbie, a rookie, and I knew nothing. 20 years later, I'm as happy as I am confident, to say: things change with time and the more I learn, the less I know, the more the questions that gnaw.

The head, hooves, skin thing is something that is found in graves of Scandinavian forerunners for thousands of years as they came out of the steppes. I think part of it is originally that the sacrificed animal was eaten in the funerary feast, and the remainder goes into the grave/given to god(s).

This energy is also not only achieved in a sexual manner but in manners of focus and love. It’s also called intelligent energy that is channeled in from the intelligent infinity or infinite intelligence. It’s when you activate your crown chakra or violet ray chakra and it opens up the gateway to the intelligent infinity where people can get many ideas for creativeness such like nikola Tesla, da Vinci and many other great inventors did. It doesn’t only have to be achieved through love though both sides of the polarity spectrum of negative and positive can achieve this. According to some sources, the evil people who use this since they aren’t aligned towards love or positive, they tend to use people who do have their heart chakra activated so they can essentially skip that part through the usage of positive people or even rape which explains what the elite are doing.

Can imagine the grave being kept open for people coming from afar to pay their respect, it was a long journey by boat to get from the western parts of Norway to the Oslo fjord, maybe even from Denmark or Sweden. It might be several different party's at different times offering animals to this woman. It is believed she was some sort of priestess or witch, something religious. Her boat was ornate and not for trade or war, she might be seen as a traveling religious center, burying people, weddings, blessing the fertility of the land and people. It is also speculated that the animals found are hunting animals, for falconering. Bones of horses, dogs and falcons where found. Even a peacock's bones was found on the ship.

Frigga or Freya, (from Whom we get Brigga or Bridget) is The Goddess in Her Sexual and Fecund Aspect. Britain is named after Bregedd/Bridget, Brittany too, and Britannia much later down the line. The church you showed was built specifically for Her, perhaps upon a grove sacred to Her. Indeed the very word church or kirk, is named after Circe, who also gives us the words; circle, sorceress amongst many others. The Tree (birch) is a primary Goddess symbol (The Wisdom Aspect of The Goddess). Friday was named after Freya, and She was far, far more important than we are led to believe. Christianity stopped these 'pagan' rituals and quashed Goddess worship /knowledge but it is clear that at one time She was The Primary Deity. The snake was considered a symbol of Lucifer/Venus, and in Ireland for example, the iconoclast St Patrick, defaced all snake headstones. The symbol represents The Goddess (Aukundi) in Her Life Giving Energy (kundalini) Aspect. Both Oak and acorn are derived from Her in that Aspect. That just leaves The Fish (fish churches), The Egg, The Bridge, Water itself, and the Spiral/Shell. Yggdrasill is named from Her Egg symbol, (The Goddess in Her Creator Aspect). Paganism derives its name from The Beech Tree incidentally. Fagus, Fagan, Pagan, and originally meant worshipping The Goddess as a Tree (Wisdom). This was a thing not at all appreciated in The Bible. However Gods wife in The Bible is Asherah, which is Buddha's Peepal or Mountain Fig Tree. To further back up this statement, The Druids, who did likewise, were named after the wisdom of the trees, hence tree wit, trewit, druid. I really hope that will help in the further study of this important work. Understanding the deities of that era is surely of utmost importance but has been neglected due to our attitude. The spears are representative of The Sun/Son (Thor/Apollo). The same appearing in Egyptian art. The spear, (The Vel) is what gives Bel, Baal His name.

30:55 It's not actually a matter of which language you use, because spelling the final v sound with an f is a remnant of runic orthography; it was changed in Swedish back in 1906 in order to facilitate learning how to read and write, whereas some other Scandinavian languages have retained this frankly awesome archaic feature stemming from the fact that there was no v rune in the Younger Futhark. You would use ᚢ in the beginning of a word and ᚠ at the end.

At 10:00 minutes viewing the the 2 monuments.... turn them upsidedown... there is more artwork on it them... that's why it seems garbled or whatever was said to describe the blurry(?) image. You can turn it 90 degrees 4x and it makes 4 sets of different images and I bet there is a back side with more ambiguous art, as well as a side view that you can flip as well. I bet they also exhibit contour rivalry... meaning depending on the angle what is viewed on the "monuments" changes. I know a LOT MORE about that particular type of "monument". I'm going to share it with others(as I'm trying to do here). All other forums I've tried block and delete my comments/posts You can try to take credit for it but you don't know how I came about obtaining this knowledge... and you got it from me, the only one (so far) that knows (as far as I know). So when they ask you how you figured it out, you wont have the answer and are incapable of coming up with the right answer because I haven't told you. You'd think that you would have figured it out yourself by now, but you have already demonstrated you can't, for you already would have... and haven't. I'm telling all... Don't or I will show, I will be hot and have no sympathy intending disgrace. Lion-Serpent-Bat

The dead has access to their graves and bones being a link to the world of the living and the old stories sometimes use this by having kin visit the graves of their father or ancestor and speaking to them and another reason bones make powerful talismans and runes being linked to the realm of the dead and the living and adding blood to it could be a means of giving it life even forming a connection between the person and the bones and such links and portals may not be limited to graves and bones and could mean the difference between a cursed or blessed ring or place.

Exactly. It also isnt taking drugs, growing your hair long and listening to Danheim and Wardruna on repeat. The closest modern reincarnations of "Vikings" are AB members who get locked up in prison or maybe a few Special Forces guys who lease out their violent tendencies legally for modern governments.

Hamr may be skin but is also used for "shape". Hamingja is also used in the context of "Luck". Hugr or Huge is also translated as "Thought". Flygja do indeed means "Follow" or "Follower". Because you use the ending "-ur" instead of just "-r" I guess that you are referring to modern Icelandic and not Old Norse. They are very similar but some words can have a slight drift in meaning over the years. To get the original meaning of some words it is a good idea to also look how they are used in the other modern Nordic languages as well.
