The Bundesverfassungsgericht (the equivalent to the supreme court or constititional court) is seated in Karlsruhe in the southwest. Therefore the definition at the end of the video applies. With Bonn you can argue, there are still some government agencies there and sometimes (branches of) ministries. The "major" part moved to Berlin though. Nevertheless, no one in Germany considers Karlsruhe as capital, Bonn might be regarded as one by a minority.
@njordholm
@njordholm Рік тому
@@Bema1001 Bonn has a unique status, it's called "Bundesstadt". As you have already stated above, the ministries headquaters are devided between Berlin and Bonn and they have second seats in Berlin/Bonn vice versa. The "Bundespräsident", "Bundeskanzler" and "Bundesrat" also have a second seat of their institution there. Additionally there is the history of Bonn as capital of the BRD during times of cold war and as well, it's still called and has the title of "UN-Stadt", as there are several headquarters of UN insitutions. So if you are looking at it from an external point of view, where there is no different word for "(Bundes-)Hauptstadt and "Bundesstadt", you can come to the conclusion, that there are two capitals. When it comes to the "Bundesverfassungsgericht" as supreme court and one of the "Verfassungsorgane" beside the above mentioned, which has its headquarter in Karlsruhe, there is also a special point to consider. There are "befriedete Berzirke", I would say DMZ (demilitarised zone) suits mosts for translation, where public meetings such as demonstrations are generally forbidden, if the federal interior minster and the president of the institution wouldn't allow it especially. There are 3 DMZ, one surround the "Reichstag" as place for the parliament, called "Bundestag" and another one surround the "Bundesrat" which headquarters are both in Berlin. The 3rd and last one is surround the "Bundesverfassungsgericht" in Karlsruhe. This makes Karlsruhe unique against all other German cities (- Berlin). If there are some other countries in the world, which consider the headquarter of its supreme court as capital, you can say, Karlsruhe could be considered as Germany's 3rd capital, if you would like to make a general comparison.

Czechia doesn't have two capitals, only one Prague, Czechia is divided into 3 three big regions, Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and every one of them have their own "capital city" Prague, Brno, Ostrava. So officialy czechia has only one capital, Prague, but if you want to count it by the regions, than it has 3. The reason why you mentioning only Prague and Brno is maybe because people from these cities and nearby regions really likes to compete with each other and sometimes there is also a bit of hate in there. A lot of people are stubborn and are living in the past. But they are all czechs with the same Capital Prague, no matter where they live. I never heared of that Czechia has two capitals. Through out the history, capital was changing and the place where the king resided also changed. But now for a long time the only capital is Prague. I don't think that only because Brno has supreme court it makes Brno the second capital. But if I'm wrong and it is official and you can point me on some czechs report on this topic, feel free to correct me.

The author of this vid explained that in this case he uses the definition of a capital city as a city where important state institutions are placed. In this sense, Brno is indeed a capital as well. Brno is a centre of the Czech judiciary, with the seats of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court, and the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office, and a number of state authorities, including the Ombudsman and the Office for the Protection of Competition (Wiki). So yes, to you and me (both being Czechs) it may sound strange, but the author is right :)

A navíc, Vrchní soud v Praze a Olomouci, ne Brně. Takže se úplně nedá říci, že by bylo Brno sídlem justice. Doufám, že vám nevadí, že mluvím naší řečí místo angličtiny, ale nemám rád, když se mezi sebou Češi (a Slováci) baví anglicky. :)

The logic behind that is that in standard political studies the three branches of government are defined as legislative (parliament), executive (government) and judiciary (supreme and constitutional courts), so by certain standards, if one of these branches is in a city that city can be considered the leg/ex/judi capital of the country. The official capital is Berlin (the seat of the Parliament, the President, the Chancellor and half of the ministries), but half of the ministries remain in Bonn, the old provisional capital of West Germany during the Cold War. These two cities are officially considered to be the seats of government. However, other important federal institutions are located in other cities because of the federal structure of Germany. Some additional oddities would be seats of governments in exile. London is probably one of the most prolific examples, being the seat of several governments in exile during WWII. And speaking of WWII, West Germany had its seat of government in Bonn, while the Capital was Berlin, which also served as capital and seat of government of East Germany (so, one capital city for two countries). Bonn still is seat of some federal ministries of United Germany. And a third oddity would be Switzerland which has no capital (not de jure, but de facto it's Bern), instead it has Federal Cities (e.g. Bern, Zurich, Lucerne, Bellizona, St. Gallen, Lausann) with each having some Government functions and institutions.

Your definition of "multiple capitals" is absolutely loony. In a many countries, especially multilingual or federally organized ones, government institutions are distributed across different regions. No sane person would ever think of calling Brno in the Czech Republic, Karlsruhe in Germany or Lausanne in Switzerland (just as an example) the capital just because the Supreme Court is located there. According to your definition, there are 30 capitals in Germany, including such world-famous metropolises as Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Braunschweig, Flensburg, Hürth or Salzgitter. The situation in The Nethrlands is and remains confusing. We seperated the captiatl and the seat of government. The capital is Amsterdam, but the "residence" as we call it, is The Hague. It grew into this role because way back in the middleages, The Hague did not have cityrights. And Holland was not much more than a collection of cities. The Hague offered the perfect neutral ground on which to meet and govern. And so it got to be the seat of government. But all official occasions take place in the capital. Fyi on Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur is THE capital of the Federation of Malaysia. There's NO TWO about it. Putrajaya is a purpose-built city of federal territory for the government administratives region. The sole reason for the development n creation of Putrajaya was to centralise all the government ministries, departments, agencies, offices, etc in one location. It also houses the Supreme Courts called the Palace of Justice, state royal castles, a number of foreign countries' diplomatic embassy n offices. However, Putrajaya is never the capital of Malaysia officially n technically. The Parliament under Legislative Branch remains in Kuala Lumpur with some other head quarters for several govt offices e.g. the federal Royal Malaysian Police PDRM.

South Korea has two capitals, although not set in law: Seoul and Sejong. Sejong is the de facto administrative capital, and all government institutions are slated to move there by 2030.

I was going to say something on this as well, glad to see someone made note of it :D Seoul, or Hanyang, has been the capital of Dae Ahn Ming Gook (The Great Republic of Korea - aka South Korea) and several of the old Korean kingdoms for something like 1500 years. However, because of the massive overcrowding of Seoul, one of the most populated metropolitan cities in the world, and because of its proximity to the border with the North, Sejong City was constitutionally established and has already received several government institutions over the last 2 decades or so, including emergency functions for the Legislative and Executive branches should Seoul come under attack or get captured. Much like how the US government always has a member of the Presidential Cabinet tucked away safely during major functions to preserve the Presidency, S. Korea has individuals in authority who operate in Sejong City to maintain government functions should disaster strike.

Hey! Love your videos and the animation is so lovely and entertaining. If I may, as a geography teacher I often don't know how to pronounce toponyms. I usually check the Wikipedia page of the city to listen how it properly sounds like (usually the English page). Also I wish you had covered the cases of the other countries highlighted in the map at the beginning of the clip (Dominican Republic, Côte d'Ivoire...). And I thought Bhutan 🇧🇹 had two capitals as well... Thanks!

Thank you! As a Bolivian, I am so thankful I am you made this distinction. I felt identified with your Netherlands explanation: Bolivians (or maybe this is a pet peeve of mine) get a bit annoyed if you mention that La Paz is the capital, even though in practice it sort of is by being the seat of govt. We get taught about Sucre being the true capital so extensively that it becomes so entrenched in our psyche. I feel that this goes back, as you said, to the strong importance it used to have in colonial times and this is where independence ideals started. Perhaps Santa Cruz replacing La Paz just as it happened with the latter replacing Sucre will be the case someday but wont happen anytime soon for political reasons.

As a foreigner, we are told/we usually learn that La Paz is the capital of Bolivia. I recently learned about Sucre, and the importance of this capital to Bolivians. Of course this is meant from an exterior pov, I have no intent in disregarding Bolivians.

Because of the War of the Pacific, Perú also had 2 capitals: Lima (the actual capital) and Arequipa. During the war, the Chileans captured Lima and the government had to escape to Arequipa, serving as some kind of headquarters. As soon as the war ended, Lima became the official capital and Arequipa was left as a normal big city.
