Modern semitrailers for the most part do a good job of keeping passenger vehicles from sliding underneath them, greatly increasing the chances of surviving a crash into the back of a large truck, recent tests by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show. But in crashes involving only a small portion of the truck's rear, most trailers fail to prevent potentially deadly underride.
Most semitrailers are required to have underride guards. These are steel bars that hang from the backs of trailers to prevent the front of a passenger vehicle from moving underneath during a crash. Earlier research showed that the minimum strength and dimensions required for underride guards are inadequate, prompting the Institute to petition the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2011 for tougher standards. The Institute also asked the agency to consider applying the standards to other types of large trucks such as dump trucks that aren't required to have any underride guards.
One likely reason manufacturers are installing guards that are stronger than required is a tougher standard that trailers in Canada have had to meet since 2007. More recently, IIHS crash tests have drawn attention to the issue, and at least one manufacturer has started selling a trailer with an improved underride guard since the tests began.

To see how well the latest guards work, IIHS engineers put trailers from the eight largest manufacturers through a series of progressively tougher crash tests. All of the trailers had underride guards that met both U.S. and Canadian standards. Both standards require a guard to withstand a certain amount of force at various points. Under the Canadian regulation, a guard must withstand about twice as much force as required by the U.S. rule at the point where it attaches to its vertical support.
In each crash test, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu (but also rolls royce crash test) struck a parked truck at 35 mph. In the first scenario, the car was aimed at the center of the trailer. All eight guards successfully prevented underride, including one from Hyundai Translead, whose previous model failed a full-width test by IIHS. In the second test, in which only half the width of the car overlapped with the trailer, all but one trailer passed. However, when the overlap was reduced to 30 percent, every trailer except one from the Canadian manufacturer Manac failed. Manac sells dry van trailers in the U.S. under the name Trailmobile. The Institute uses a 30 percent overlap for the most challenging underride test because it is the minimum overlap under which a passenger vehicle occupant's head is likely to strike a trailer if an underride guard fails.

The bumper on the truck for the new test has better reinforcement which puts more pressure on the front instead of the windscreen in this one. In the old video the bumper on the truck just folds.

+kx250fmotocross but if you can't stop then aim for center, its better to accelerate than to brake because braking makes your cars front dip down and you get a lower hit point, if you accelerate your car lifts up and prevents from hitting you hard

The way I use to stop and/or reduce speed is breaking and down shifting the quickest and while I can. If this don't work the alternative is let the car go.

My mother bought a twenty-two year old Mercades Bens about a month ago. The old thing works perfectly, the only problem is that it smells like overly-perfumed church lady when she turns the air on, Lol! Anyway, I can't remember what channel it was on, but they were testing a Merc's durability throughout four episodes, and I must say my mother made a good choice. It survived extremely rough terrain (1st test), it survived engine failure due to being submerged in water (2nd test), it survived a monster truck (3rd test) AND it survived a grenade, an old style cannon AND a stick of dynamite to the engine! I was like, "Surely this car won't survive THIS time". No. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. It started up again. This was one of the most stubborn cars I'd ever seen.

It wasn't the car they were testing it was the trailer. The Chevy Malibu was the safest car in it's category and that's why they used it. They are showing that different brands of trailers have different results.

o.m.a. S Watch the regular 40% overlap tests for pickups....they are some of the worst out there for safety, they fold like a house of cards! My advice would be to buy a normal car that is safe (like a volvo) and if you are about to hit the back of a trailer....SWERVE! Almost anything else you hit will be much less dangerous!

Looks like it's time for the rest of the world to take a leaf out of Australia's book. At the slight disadvantage of a longer wheelbase, we mount our trailer axles at the very rear of the unit. In all of the 30% offset tests, the under-ride bar would play no part, as the car's front would contact the trailer tyres (or as you guys spell it tires) long before the passenger compartment reaches any part of it. Although having just watched the updated test, seems some real improvements have been made.

True. It seems regulation they do reinforce, but they failed to reinforce the a few feet on each side. There is a 'bumper' on the trailer but no extra support on the outside of it, so of course it bends on impact. This needs to change.

Clay do that also if you are following ANY truck or trailer hauling REBAR, PIPE, or WOOD, or CONDUIT, or anything else of the likes. Car haulers and flatbeds hauling tractors, generators etc are less likely to have their payload fall off.

Cars are fine, it's sick that the trailer companies won't throw another $30 worth of metal, and hardware, won't fail, save lives. Half these things I see on the road are about due to fail from rust, or already bent and compromised. Should be mandatory specs, for all trailer bumpers, including side guards, minimal costs compared to re-engineering cars.

I actually saw a lady die from a crash just like this on a interstate in FL near Disney (i4). A box truck was missing the entire bumper bar assembly that's supposed to make contact with a car if it gets rear ended and the lady's car went straight underneath the truck and killed the driver. I knew it was a bad accident because there was a EMT on site and she was in tears from how bad it was so I'm guessing the lady was decapitated... It was a very sad thing to see.

I think the biggest thing these tests prove is that underride guards need to be much stronger. In some of those tests, they crumpled like paper.

the trick is to avoid the crash. allow a safe following distance, obey speed limits and get off the phone. If you get behind the wheel, pay attention! As a professional driver, I'm getting tired of people screwing around in my office.

We have known about this trailer issue for 50 years and still nothing has been done about it . Maybe there have not been enough deaths for the D.O.T. to demand changes . Unless you are driving an SUV or truck that super offset test will kill any driver in any car! That corner of the trailer has nothing but glass to stop it. I think overall the malibu did great, Would love to see some other cars, Honda, Toyota and Dodge in the same tests

Eu trailers use smaller wheels thus lowering the chance of getting under, they also have wheels placed further back so there's less space for the car to crash into. Just take a look at Krone or Kögel.

I have seen plenty underride crashes in the EU. The "underride protection" on EU trailers are certified to withstand 11 tons of force. And thats nothing against moving car. That equals ca 15kmh crash. In 1200 KG car.
