That dip at 700 bpm is fascinating. I think it is caused by the beater moving at a frequency that is close to a resonance mode of the drum skin so the beater and skin end up vibrating in phase, or going in and out of phase. It is a beater frequency beat frequency! I wonder if the frequency where you hear the dip would happen at different bpms if you positioned the beater in different places on the skin? Hmm.

Yeah I think the snare is tuned to around 185Hz which is 3 octaves above the 23.2Hz, that the beater is moving at. Moving the beater towards the center might make it happen at lower octaves (eg. 11.6Hz) because there is more movement at the center.

Just pointing out that when you double 999 you get 1998 you have a phase issue in the drum skin at 700, so when you are at 1998 you are approaching a multiple of 700 (2100), possibly explaining why it started dropping out again. It is more likely that 1998bpm is just too damn fast to get clear spikes. If you set it even faster you could make a tone, re-sample it and create a melody from incredibly fast snare rolls? go on.

@metamermusic

@OliverMaklott-om
@OliverMaklott-om 4 роки тому
@@metamermusic Well, good point. Thing is, the beater is the active element in the system. The skin is reacting to it within its physical boundaries. The beater acts out the trigger signals sent to it and, from that point of view, does not really have an own resonant frequency. But perhaps I'm seeing that wrong ;) (...and yes, I know, the beater mechanics itself surely have some resonant frequency but I claim that's heavily counteracted by the actuator built into it)
@NothingXemnas
@NothingXemnas 4 роки тому
@@OliverMaklott-om The moving head might not have a resonance frequency, but the whole construct has. Whenever the head wants to move forward, the rest moves backwards, as expected from action and reaction. Added to that, the beater hitting the drum also vibrates it from the impact. At 700 bpm, we simply see the beater trying to hit the drum, but the whole equipment is shaking along. The drum skin should have a much higher resonance frequency, above 1kHz. Unless the WHOLE drum piece also has a resonance of 700, then it would also explain it. If that is the case, simply adding weight to it (putting magnets randomly around head, poles, supports and so on), you can change the resonance frequency.

At around the 700 bpm level you noted, the frequency of the wave travelling through the drum membrane probably approaches being perfectly out of phase with the frequency of the mallet, so their waves attenuate each other. I think all the hits are happening, but the sound frequencies are being wiped out. I agree (at 5:25), it's bound to be different from drum to drum or even from drum head to drum head because of different sizes and materials having different resonant frequencies. If you tighten the drum head, the attenuation would likely happen at a higher bpm and vise versa if you loosen it. With the right setup, the drum/mallet could be an oscillator.

I'm pretty poor at physics, but if we reckon that the mallet is out of phase when playing eight notes at 700bpm, could you work out the resonate frequency of the snare skin to be 5.6kHz? It would be interesting if Andrew could give us the frequency of the snare hit and see if it truly is out of phase, or if there are other magic forces at work.
@conmanyoda
@conmanyoda 5 років тому
@@xandergreenwood158 A circular drum has way more than one resonant frequency. An Ideal circular drum head has tons of well defined resonant modes, all with different resonant frequencies. A snare drum is in no way ideal, and is a much more complex system, but the general idea carries over that there are a variety of modal structures that can form at different resonances, any of which could be causing this interaction. I'm also no sure where you got 5.6 kHz from. 700bpm is ~12 Hz, so 700bpm 8th notes would be ~24 Hz.
@MascottDeepfriar
@MascottDeepfriar 5 років тому
It would actually make more sense that he hit the resonant frequency of the beater head rather than something to do with the drum skin. You can see the beater head is bouncing a little with each strike and that changes at the point that the sound changes.

This issue can be altered by tuning the drum head. It's almost like a phase issue where the rhythm of the head rebound cancels the stroke. You could probably estimate the note that the drum was tuned to: 700 bpm = a rate of approximately 11.6 strokes per second This equates to 11 or so Hz So the issue is with the drum head vibrating at around 11Hz which is in or around the note of F

The cutouts are probably at the tuning of your drum head where the - 700hz (~F4) is about an octave above where your snare is likely tuned, and so the resonance of the drum head would be in phase with the beater head, and thus not really striking the head so much as following it. Looking at your waveform it looks like there's a less pronounced dip at about half the frequency as well, which would match with that explanation!
@stefan1024
@stefan1024 5 років тому
It's actually 700bpm (=beats per minute) not 700hz (=beats per second) though. But generally I agree, tuning of the snare seems to be some multiple of 700bpm.

@@stefan1024 derp, absolutely right. That makes it an E, but yeah, still works out to a resonant frequency most likely. Good catch!

I am pretty sure what happens at 700bpm is that your are playing on a structural mode of your snare drum. In order to remove it or displace the effect to another frequencies you need to move the actuator on the surface of the snare drum to find a place where the modes doesn't effect the snare surface. Basically you have a higher chance to find a good spot on the sides of the snare surface. (PhD in acoustics)

He's said that he has no problem with session musicians (It's not about authenticity, it's about how good it sounds), but this still kinda falls apart because the beaters are dinky and wouldn't handle metal well. It's not really a huge improvement because they hit the drum the same way every time, so the effect is a lot like a drum sample.
@user-sw1wq8lh2w

Just for a little physics at where the midi drummer stopped hitting at ~700bpm, i believe what happened is that the drummer hit the drum head, and while the drum head was near peak of its movement(imagine a sine wave) but in the other direction, it attempted to hit the drum again, but the head was too far away, so it couldn't hit. If it could, it probably would have gotten louder than usual because it would have been at the resonance frequency of the drum, adding more power every time the drum head was moving in the correct direction (imagine pushing someone on a swing whenever they swing towards you, right at the apex of thier swing).
