In 1973 I was getting on a plane at Lod airport. The security guy looked at my passport and says "I see you visit mostly Eastern European countries. Why is that?" I said I'm studying Slavic languages, particularly Russian literature." The guy, who was my age, switches to Russian and as he's going thru my baggage says "Why don't you tell me a little about the character development of Parfen Rogozhin in Dostoevky's The Idiot." Surprised, I started doing my usual "I'm not prepared for this" analysis of the character development. He finished my luggage and says "OK, you can get on the plane but I suggest you read your Dostoevsky a little more carefully."

El Al does a background check on every passenger before the flight, especially on a route like Dubai-TLV, so they knew you were an avgeek with a youtube page and the crew was briefed before the flight to take extra care of you during this flight, and not even question you even though u went to Iran and Irak.

I think too, it looks like he had an VIP Treatment there. Most Passengers get one Meal with one Drink, this was 4 Meals with 3 Drinks if I counted right. A bit strange is the red Wine with all Meals. I'm not someone who know Wine, but as I know its the Rule Dark to Red and Bright to White. So the Soufflaki and the Steak with red Wine and the two Fish with white Wine. Also serving another Glass Wine when theres still one, ismaybe a bit much, but maybe they are different ones, like a dry and a sweet Wine.

As a frequent flyer to and from Israel, I find El Al to offer the best staff service. Though the amenities may not be as nice as some of the others, I always feel at peace during the flight. There is something very nice about the flight when all the passengers are happy with the service, the feelings are somewhat contagious. I tried just about every airline there is to offer in and out of Israel, El Al is my go to every time now.

About 20 years ago, my mother flew El Al from London to Israel. She was a wine buyer at the time. She remembers that El Al had no trouble with her carrying her corkscrew onto the plane. When she flew from the states to London, TSA had confiscated it from her and sent it through baggage. She asked El Al's security person why it was allowed. She says they told her their security check showed her to be a wine buyer and that she had held that job since retiring from being a school teacher 12 years earlier. They did not think that a wine buyer carrying a corkscrew was anything that threatened security. So El Al might have the toughest security, but they are, also, realists.

Interesting observation you made about the anti-missile measures installed on the plane. The need for this arose about 20 years ago, when a jetliner of another Israeli carrier (Arkia) was targeted by two SA7 Strela missiles while taking off from Mombasa, Kenya by Al Qaeda terrorists. Luckily the missiles missed their target, but since then the lesson was learned and the planes were armed with this system.

Very interesting video. And that flight attendant is so great. I once flew in the 90's a domestic flight in Northern-India, from Jammu to Kashmir, where they fought between government troops and insurgents. It was stupid to go there in the first place but I was young and it was my first long back pack trip. We were checked many times and also interrogated, where are we going, why, do we know any people there? In the apron we were checked one more time and we had to identify our luggage before it was loaded in the plane. They took the batteries away from my camera and broke the battery hatch. I also had to take a picture to show that the camera is real.

I flew Newark too Tel Aviv economy with El Al, I ithink I was the only non Jew on the plane indeed all the others seemed too be ultra orthodox. I had at least a half hour chat with a very nice security lady before I boarded, I guess they didn't have much work that day apart froom talking to me. Luckily they let me on. Another tme I flew out I was sitting on an aisle seat with a nice young lady at the window seat. An ultra orthoodox man was placed between us. Ultra orthodox cannot sit next women who are not family, so he immediately got an upgade to business class. I would have swapped seats with him if he had asked. But I guess we all benefitted from the arrangement more leg space for all of us. Though I did think it was somewhat ungentlemanly of him not to ask for the flight upgrade to the young lady instead of himself.

A friend of mine, a tall blonde German gentleman, was interrogated for an hour because he visited egypt before. Instead of his designated seat, he was then seated elsewhere next to a supposed air marshall with no other passengers around. He didnt mind though, security has to be top notch for an israeli airline. There actually was a El Al hijacking in 1968, before air marshalls. Since then, attacks only took place on the ground, often resulting in wounded, prisoned and dead attackers.

El Al is pretty unique as an airline...especially on an unscheduled stop. I was living in Wichita, KS when 9/11 happened, and every aircraft in the US was vectored to the nearest commercial airport that could receive them. Wichita "Intercontinental" (ICT) which was usually populated by a variety of regional puddle-jumpers, domestic 737s, and the occasional 757..... suddenly had a line-up of wide-body jets from far-flung and exotic locales......including an El Al chartered 747, with most of a plane load of exchange students who that thought they were flying direct from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv. The passengers got to spend a week sleeping on Red Cross cots in a High School gymnasium and touring the local sights (such as they were), with most of the flight crew acting as additional volunteer chaperones. Including Old Cowtown Museum, which I was a senior manager at... Trying to explain the Wild West, cattle drives, and cowboys to young people who mostly had never even seen a Western movie and whose English was often shaky turned into a memorable occasion, and the El Al crew were all doing their best to deal with cranky teens who really didn't understand why Americans seemed to be making such a fuss about terrorism....and not letting them go home.

At that time, the flight attendants were all male and we're military veterans. The only thing that I didn't like was the food. We were delayed on the tarmac at JFK for over 3 hours because something happening in Canada and they could not serve us anything except water until we were in the air. It does look like the food has improved. That was a different time (only 18 months after the Yom kippur war) but would I fly EL AL airline again? YES definitely!
