Go Muscles....😂 Great history as always. Very interesting Canal. Great bridge and Managers Residence. I enjoyed your explanation how the Canal Locks work. Cool Swing Bridge. Loved the cottages you were cycling by. The Loch looks lovely. Those ruins are still there, thats pretty amazing. WoW! Scotland had Italian P.O.Ws as we in Australia did too, in Murchinson, Victoria. Another cute cottage 17:18 Love the little light house and white washed cottages. Lots of History along this journey. Thank you for sharing. Have a great week.

And here is old Tich, once again! That looked a scorcher of a day, when you filmed this great wee video! These videos mean so much more to me, and as an Argyllshire lassie, there is a lot of history that I know not a thing about! In my nearly 70 years, I never ever got to this lovely wee place, I knew the canal was there, but little else! It must have been great for puffers, yachts etc. to go through this way, avoiding the often turbulent waters of the Mull of Kintyre. It was interesting to hear that the canal got narrower till it reached Crinan, as the Malcolms of Poltalloch, surely benefitted from it, and they were not short of a bob or two! The scenery around the canal, and the wee lock-keepers cottages, whitewashed with lovely wee gardens is really tranquil, and steadied my racing heart and brain, due to a flitting in a month's time, and I'm sitting here in old He himself's midden, boxes and bags everywhere. I need to get rid of 9/10 of my possessions,and cannot decide what is vital to take or throw out! Never mind, at the end of it, I'll be back home in Oban once more, and able to see all these places which you have made so far, and educate my old mind, if I can find the bloody thing! Ha-ha. Thankyou Julie and Martin for all your exertions on my behalf.

Thanks for taking us along. There is an Italian prisoner of war camp just a few miles from me, the buildings are mainly used as small business units. There is a church in one of them which I hope to see one day. Apparently the prisoners were taken out to help on the farms and many stayed in the area after the war.

I think many did hang around. I have friends of Italian descent in Northern Ireland, they had an ice cream shop, their grandparents were sent to a POW camp on the Isle of Man for the duration of the war " just in case". Sounds ludicrous but I guess folk were nervous.... One brother after the war came back to Northern Ireland and reopened the shop, the other stayed on the Isle of Man and opened his own ice cream parlour!!

Thanks Julie heard of Tedford designing some of the locks not James Watts didn’t catch the others. It looks rather wide compared to many narrow boat canals and Locks.

James Rennie was the other boy responsible. I think parts of it are wider as it took all manner of craft, to avoid it having to go the long way, which involved very dangerous seas.

Beacon and lighthouse exactly same thing? Thx!🇨🇦🙏
@ExploringScotlandsHistory
@ExploringScotlandsHistory 2 роки тому
It can be referred to as a beacon as there are no living quarters, ie. it wasn't physically manned, it is, in effect, a lighthouse though 🤗
