Today, I'll show you my first border crossing into Canada in my RV! I went into Canada through one border crossing customs station, and out through another. You won't believe what they did when I went back into the states and where I screwed up.

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, and our international Singing Competition (Sweet Adelines, barber shop singing) was last minute moved to Detroit… our chorus could only find lodging in Canada. SOOO everyday twice a day we went through Customs! The only ‘trouble’ we had was first trip back into Canada the agent had me open on second sliding door to see all of us 7 women! And then… he ASKED us to SING😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️❤️

Detroit is the worst place to cross back over into the States, at least with our 30 years of experience. We stopped going through Detroit and started going north through Sarnia. They are much more cordial.😊

@priscillawrites6685 I'm so sorry that happened to you. My husband and I got tired of being treated badly at the Detroit crossing coming back to our own country. All the border workers we dealt with seemed angry and extremely rude. Sarnia is a much more pleasant place to cross over into Michigan. We generally go into Canada at Buffalo or Niagara Falls, and leave through Sarnia. We've also crossed back into the States at Sault St Marie and had no problem.

Ok I’m Canadian and spent 43 years as a commercial driver crossing back and forth over pretty much every border crossing between our two countries. It doesn’t matter which way you are going. You will encounter pleasant agents and those that like to show the fact that you are under their control and that is true for either side. Carrying food seems to be a bigger issue going south but there are regulations to protect against carrying disease in the food either way. Rv’s tend to get searched more often for those returning to their home.

I hear you girl. I'm parked at my friends house. I think a few years ago people might've had a beef with me parking in their neighborhood. Due to the economic times we live in, more than a few people here have campers in their driveways, or yards. Some might be B&B but majority are relatives or friends living in them. I might go to an RV park eventually, but for now everything you said about having your own bed, fridge etc vs a guest room is exactly my feelings.

Coming back into the US has always been more difficult. When I was in my 20’s, in the 1970’s, I crossed back into the US from Canada, BC. I was accompanied by my Grandmother, younger sister, and my Irish Setter. I did have all the correct paperwork for my dog. Perhaps it was just a bad day for the person at the border, but the first thing they did was rather aggressively ask if my dog was an American dog (while I’m handing him my registration and vet records). Unfortunately, it was just too funny a question to me and I replied (stupidly), “No she’s Irish.” Well that did not go over well and we ended up having the whole car searched. Lesson learned don’t mess with border patrol especially in this era.

Great video Robin. We just did a three week RV trip from Minnesota, through Canada, over to Maine. Crossing into Canada twice was no problem. However crossing from Canada into New York State (at Cornwall) we were searched by US agriculture staff and they made us exit the vehicle and wait outside. They took our tomatoes and oranges 🤔 I asked them to not open the door to the bedroom in back because we have a cat back there. However, after they left, the cat was no where to be found - my heart was pounding. Turns out they must have opened the door and the cat got out - luckily he was hiding under the jackknife couch and did not run out of the vehicle!!!

IMO, no "official" is ever going to respect our requests, even when the request is absolutely understandable, like avoiding the risk of losing a beloved family pet into an unfamiliar area -- They. Just. Don't. Care. One. Whit. They probably took yr request to mean you were hiding something illegal in that back room and trying to smuggle it.
@kilngoddess424
@kilngoddess424 6 місяців тому
Likely crating your cat for the border crossing would be a better answer. Cause you know if you say don't look somewhere thats where they are gonna look cause smugglers would try to get them not to look where they've stashed the loot.

Forty years plus ago (while in my 20s), I flew and met a friend who lived in Rochester NY to see the Fall colors. We took his car from there, which was technically a rental car as his family owned rental car agencies, and every car his family drove was owned by the rental car company. We then drove to Niagra Falls, Toronto, Ottowa and Montreal, then headed south to Vermont. We had no issues going into Canada, but coming back into the US, they said they were checking for drugs and darn-near DISASSEMBLED the car, pulling all of the door panels, seats, spare tire, trunk covering. And when done, Border Patrol just said rudely "you can go" with zero apology and left us with the car all torn up and the parts laying in the parking lot. To the point where the car was almost undriveable. We threw the stuff back in the car and drove to Burlington, Vermont and "turned in" the car to the local rental agency and got a new car to finish our trip. His family then swapped out later on to get his car back. I have thought how lucky we were that his family owned the rental car agency.

I live in Washington and I have never had a problem going into Canada by car, ferry, motorcycle, or on foot. I was made to throw away apples when crossing by boat and learned to not shop for fruit before going into Canada. I’m not sure if I have ever had an easy time going back into the US. Most of the time it’s nothing much but they have made me go sit in the station while they searched my car. They impounded my boat which I had bought in Canada and I told them I wanted to import it. They wouldn’t accept the form I filled out until I hired an import broker to submit the form. It was only 24 hours but I was on an island and I was happy they let me stay on the boat while it was being figured out. I had planned to stay at that marina anyways, but I hadn’t planned on spending the day on the phone doing paperwork. They even let me use their fax machine, but it was probably the only one on the island

Same here. I was a Corrections officer at the time, moving back to Alaska. They emptied my UHaul and found an old black powder pistol that didn't even fire. I told them it was just a "wall hanger" display. But since I hadn't intentionally disabled it I was now a "gun smuggler". Then they confiscated my truck...but were glad to sell it back to me for 500 canadian. I also had a 17' kayak strapped to the top of my truck wrapped in plastic wrap. Could have had ton of contraband in it (didn't) and they showed zero interest. Keystone cops. This was on the West Coast. Blaine, I think. 21 years ago. Haven't been back since.

I recently had two crossings where they went through everything I had with me. Once I was on a bicycle coming back into Canada from St. Pierre Island on a ferry. I had 2 panniers with a tent strapped on. The other one was when I entered back into Maine by VW Golf. Of course, I had nothing I wasn't suppose to. I am 79, female and traveled for two months through Newfoundland/Labrador and other Atlantic provinces. I am from KY.

The Canadian border has always been easy to cross into Canada and hell getting back into the US. I made this journey untold times and about half the time they would search our cars, vans, horse trailers coming back into the US. It has always been that way as long as I have been doing it and I started in the mid 1960's until just a couple of years ago. Nothing new. Just know that it will happen to your at some point.

Having to toss fresh fruit and veggies is nothing new. I'm 67 and we would take the bridge to Canada from Detroit growing up. My dad would stop and get some fruit while in Canada and told us we had to eat it all before going home. As a family of 7 that wasn't too hard to do. I live just 30 minutes south of the bridge. I've ran that bridge three times doing a half marathon. Welcome to Michigan!

I saw a documentary on crossing the border into Canada. A man told the officer that he was going to help his girlfriend's mother to build an addition to the mother's house. The officer told this guy that he couldn't come into Canada cause he would be taking a job away from a Canadian. He was saved by his girlfriend who was able to basically convince the agent into agreeing that wasn't the case. Sheesh! I believe in protecting citizens but such stuff is over the top!

We have those rules as does the US. It is a separate country and we have to follow rules going into the States. It isn't an extension of the States .

Crossing into and out of the US with food can be an issue. The US customs web site is not always clear, but generally never cross with fruits, vegetables and meats. Boarder agents in the past have always asked us the address we are spending the first night in the US. Going into Canada, just leave your guns at home. It is a huge issue for Canadians.

The real problem was you entered in a rental. People dump vehicles and the province you land become responsible to find. It's a logistical nightmare. Next time fly and rent.

Welcome to Canada. Please don’t light unnecessary fires. Please consider serve water. Please just respect the planet here and at home. (Of course this goes for Canadians as well). It has been an exceptionally dry winter and spring. Wild fires have already started. These fires are devastating to people and homes. I know you put them out but they can travel underground and may appear out only to start up in another location. Thanks for hearing my rant. I hope others watching your video will listen as well. Glad you had a good visit.

We cross from Canada to Maine all the time, they always check inside our fridge and make us throw out any vegetables. They will also take dog/cat food products that have meat, especially chicken. Even if the product was packaged in the US. No rhyme or reason. You just be polite and they will at times give you a break.

I hear ya on getting back to the US. Did a simple Niagara Falls trip. I had a headache in the line to Customs, figured it would be a 20 min wait, but it was 90+ mins. You could see the drug store just beyond customs, and see the line moving into Canada at a decent pace. Of course getting into the US was a parking lot.

Did you not see the 5-6 big stop signs you just drove right through? For ever and a day you can not bring fruits or vegetables across the border at least 60 years or more. It’s not a big deal for them to check your fridge on the way across. I live in Canada and camp mostly in the USA, because that’s my people! It’s easy crossing.

yep same always easier to get into Canda than back into your own country. Going to Canada normally takes averages 30seconds to a minute max pending on the agent, going back to U.S. 2 to 5 minutes

Wow, you are in for quite the experience ;-) We had the search done to us when crossing back into Canada from Haines, Alaska…they told us we had been “chosen” 😂😂😂😂 Despite the Nexus card and all…😂😂😂 When crossing into another country, you’ve got to be ready/prepared…. For anything :-) Thanks for sharing. Welcome to Canada! Hope you have/had a great time! Life too short not to experience another country!

We travel to Canada quite a bit with our motorhome. Coming into the US, no fruit, no meat and no eggs. Last summer we were questioned quite a bit about about prescription drugs that we may be bringing into US from Canada. This was at Seattle. They wanted to know if all of our prescriptions were in the original containers so that they could be checked. Yes they were. Many more questions regarding RX. Then questions about our previous crossings. We were on our way back from Alaska so we had crossed the border many times in the past 2 months. This guy kept us for about 15 minutes. Some RVs were pulled into bays for thorough searches. We've never had so many questions.

They have agriculture laws around food. Even in the US this used to happen. In the 8-'s I hitched over the border. We walked through. Our backpacks were searched, they found mace which was illegal, and we had to drain the canisters. Also, had some fruit, they asked us to throw out. We drained the-mace and ate the fruit. That night I became biolently ill! 😮. Don't mix mace with eating is my take home!

If you plan on exploring Mexico or Canada and crossing frequently it may be worth it to get global entry or nexus. They still do random searches but it is a more streamlined process. In any case, some years ago I got searched and I have both a passport and a Michigan license. Although I was recovering from food poisoning in Toronto so I admit I looked pretty disheveled.
