SpaceX is targeting Thursday, June 3 for Falcon 9’s launch of the twenty-second Commercial Resupply Services mission (CRS-22).Liftoff is targeted for 1:29 p.m. EDT, or 17:29 UTC, from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center, Florida. A backup launch opportunity is available on Friday, June 4 at 1:03 p.m. EDT, or 17:03 UTC. Following stage separation, SpaceX will land Falcon 9’s first stage on the “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship, which will be located in the Atlantic Ocean. Dragon will separate from Falcon 9’s second stage about twelve minutes after liftoff and autonomously dock to the space station on Saturday, June 5.

The boostback burn probably has something to do with the intended orbit, but I'm not sure. You could argue that the last crewed launches did not do boostback burns, but I'm thinking that that's because of the payload's total mass. I think that this mission was carrying a heavier payload and that could have something to do with the path that the first stage needed to take.
@ChannelReuploads9451
@ChannelReuploads9451 2 роки тому
The Drone ship was only 300 Kilometers from shore, (it was explained on SpaceFlightNow), because of the Lower Stage Separation (Dragon will do the rest in a series of burns later), the Falcon had more fuel left, but not enough to make it back to the pad, so it boosted back to the Drone ship closer to shore, than a Starlink launch where at stage separation, it coasts upward before reaching apogee, and coasting back via the outward arc towards the Droneship, about 550 Kilometers out at sea.
@Mishn0
@Mishn0 2 роки тому
Why is there a boostback burn if they're landing on the drone ship? Also, this is the first time I saw the velocity increase for a few seconds after the shutdown of the re-entry burn. Usually it continues to decrease even after the shut down.

The more weight thrown by the booster, the less propellant available for boost-back. Margins are too low for return to LZ1. Still, it is better to have drone ships closer to the [sea port] dock. There are different time delays for audio, video, and telemetry due to different amount of satellite and/or direct link paths. That's why announcers have long pauses during hand-offs and video events appear delayed compared to control center audio.

Wait, why was there a boostback burn if it landed on a droneship? That's not happened much before.
@1shotz1killz12

Heavier payload needing more propellant maybe? they might not have had enough for boostback to the land landing site.
@TheEvilmooseofdoom

@@1shotz1killz12 When that happens they usually land on the drone further down range. Boosting back and landing on a drone ship is new or relatively new since I can't recall it being done before.

@ChannelReuploads9451 2 роки тому
The Drone Ship was about 300 Kilometers away from shore this time, because the intended orbit of the Dragon was LOWER, (It does a couple of burns later), so there was a bit of fuel left over to boost back to the drone ship closer to land. This is instead of a Starlink launch, where it has no more fuel left at separation, so it uses momentum to carry it to apogee, and coast in an outward Arc, to the drone ship, about 550 Kilometers out. Closer to land, Quicker turn around time, less fuel for the Drone ship.

The liquid oxygen, in its tank, is continuously boiling off. In order maintain the pressure, it periodically has to vent some oxygen overboard. When it does, some of it freezes and makes snowflakes or chunks.
