Both are of use depending on situation. Boxing is not robotic, unlimited punches, just trainers are rigid and follow things over and over thinking that's the only way.

Lot of old school boxers used to wear him to learn how to hit properly and to condition the hands as well. The gloves that you see now are much bigger that protect the hands but you may not be hitting the bag correctly. These gloves teach how to hit the bag. Ali, Liston, Willie Pep, Arguello, Monzon, Joe Louis all wore these type of gloves

I wish I would had a good trainer. I started at 11 and now I’m 25. I got stuck at 19 aprox. Now I only do sparring and the trainer does not teach anything. I improve slowly just because I love box and study a lot of boxers and situations. With a good trainer I would enjoy a lot more this sport.

@Shank C Go watch Muhammad Ali hit the heavy bag in the 70s, he never wore big gloves. He always wore small 4 oz mitts to strengthen his wrists and increase his power.

@Shank C I just saw a video of oleksandr usyk using super thin mitts while hitting the heavy bag, and he's now next in line for Joshua's belts. I'm not saying it's superior, but there's a reason those guys back in the day didn't break their hands as often as the ones of today. They had more conditioned hands. Mayweather always hits with 16oz gloves on the bag and he has brittle hands.

Thats NOT a way to condition your hands...you cant hit with accurate punches with bag gloves and they do more damage than good......the way you condition your hands is through forearm/wrist and hand strong man work outs. Power wasnt the subject of problem it was increasing it .Usint those bag gloves is WHY he isnt hitting that hard at least for me.....using 16 oz gloves with FULL compacity swing on heavier lower hung bags or hitting bottom of more dense cement bags is the way to increase your punch.

Well he will eventually fight better guys,you dont stop punching power if thats your source.Also considering hes thinking going to HW division...i also gave advise to Trey Morrison 2 years ago on the subject.

@Galaxyz Bag gloves arent accurate and have a tendency to hurt the wrist...ive been in martial arts for 30 years i would know something on this subject. I knocked wlad Klitchkos sparring partner out cold 10 years ago who was 250 pounds .....step away son!
