Do you really need suspension on your gravel bike? RockShox Rudy XPLR and Reverb XPLR review

Do you really need suspension on a gravel bike? The idea of suspension forks on gravel bikes has always been a contentious one, and the bike industry hasn’t exactly done itself any favors given what was available early on.
Several of the most popular ones were just chopped-down obsolete mountain bike forks, and they looked and rode like them. They were heavy, they were ugly, and the afterthought tuning just didn’t work well enough to convince enough people that they were worth the substantial hit in weight and cost. Cannondale’s Lefty Oliver fork has probably come the closest functionally, but its single-sided design and proprietary hub present its own hurdles to adoption.
Now that the segment has apparently reached critical mass, aftermarket component brands have finally decided it’s worth investing the time and resources in gravel-specific suspension: stuff that’s smaller and lighter-weight, with more appropriate tuning and features. RockShox is the first major player to formally announce a new gravel-specific fork called the Rudy Ultimate XPLR.

Yes, but with remote lockout. I’ve got a cheap suspension fork on mine and it’s awesome and faster on all downhills (paved included), faster and smoother on flat gravel roads, and no bobbing when climbing or sprinting when locked out. It’s fantastic.

Appreciate the in-depth analysis along with the lack of B-roll from a different angle as in past videos - this feels like you’re talking to me whereas those others became distracting and unnecessary. The B-roll footage of the Rockshox in action with close-ups of the components help viewers understand exactly what you’re taking about. However, I’ll add the camera angle in the office with your giant poster and bench taking up half the view was odd and distracting. Otherwise it was great to hear Australian prices mentioned. Perhaps would be good to have pricing overlays, but understand you probably rushed to get the video released with other publications :)

Nobody needs a front suspension on their gravel bike. But everyone who tested one wants one. :) I don't see a purpose for the dropper post at all. A gravel bike is for bikepacking or for gravel racing. For bikepacking you can't put on a saddle bag because of the AXS box. And for gravel racing you can't add more weight for something you don't need and would prefer a lightweight flexing carbon seatpost. But a suspension fork is highly beneficial for both.

We live in a time when all sorts of rides and races are billed as"gravel" and a fork that will perform better over a variety of terrain iincluding rougher "gravel" courses is more practical unless ypu only do very smooth gravel with pavement races.
