Constantly mocked in secondary school over a six year period all I could think of was "I don't want to live anymore". Your song lifted me out of the darkness and showed me there was beauty in the world. You were like a guardian angel watching over me. Thank you eternally for saving me. ❣

I hadn’t heard this song for a very long time and then one day i was hanging out the washing, feeling pretty anxious about the whole world and where it’s headed, a bit depressed. It was a cloudy day and i had headphones in listening to a random playlist and then the sun burst through the clouds into my face as this song began to play. And it felt like God was speaking to me. I knew God was telling me that I’m a good person and I have to be more honest and open about who i really am. A decade earlier a girlfriend I really loved broke up with me and she said something about how she has seen my true colours… meaning that I wasn’t really a good person. But to me it always felt undeserved because i treated her good and always gave her love unconditionally. She gave up on me because she couldn’t be bothered dealing with my hard times and my struggles. But i feel ok about it now because i know I treated her well and she just couldn’t be bothered to endure that path with a man that loved her. We all have our lessons to learn. But in that recent moment hearing the song it felt like God telling me I’ve done well dealing with it. And my true colours are worthy.

I am in a state of depression at the moment, but still I wanted to say this. Remember that you are NEVER alone. Maybe you haven’t found the person who will listen to YOU , yet.. but you will. I promise you. YOU are beautiful. YOU are special. It doesnt matter if you suffer from borderline, social anxiety or are lonely. When this video first came out on MTV in the 80s, we were all blown away, because no one had ever seen ANYTHING like this! ( Especially the skirt made out of newspaper strips!) Now, I’m blown away by the imagination and artistry of Cyndi Lauper, who was always way ahead of her time.

I'm surprised at some of the critical comments. Yes, Marina, Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake all have very lovely voices and did great versions of this song, but Cyndi Lauper has a once-in-a-generation voice. It's a voice thats beauty is *because* of its imperfections. It's distinctive, the kind of voice that you can't create through training, production and auto-tuning (not that I'm accusing any of the others I mentioned of that. The Marina and Kendrick/Timberlake versions are clearly beautiful without any production enhancement). Lauper's voice has a vulnerable, emotive quality that simply can't be duplicated. It may not be your cup of tea, but it's not a "bad" voice by any means.

Ive loved this song since I was just a little lonely boy. Not until today did I see the deep mystical meaning of the song. A song sung by the universe to a person suffering in its experience. A song of wisdom we should remember, as singular experiences of the mirror around us.

The older I get the more I can appreciate her. I didn't like her when I was young. But she brought authenticity and raw human emotion back into a music industry that was losing that fast in the 1980s and 90s. And her songs have a real sweetness to them, I mean that in the best way.
