John Kramer is the engineering mastermind known as Jigsaw, who was responsible for the loss of at least 57 victims. How did Kramer's past turn him into one of the most feared horror villains?
► Subscribe: goo.gl/DT39UP (Don't forget to turn on deathbell notifications!)
Born in 1954, John Kramer would eventually become the most iconic serial criminal that the Metropolitan Police Department would ever come up against. Although he is rarely the one to physically harm his victims, Kramer exhibits the behavior of a psychopath. The name Jigsaw derives from cutting Jigsaw pieces from the flesh of his failed victims as a symbol for the missing piece of their survival instinct.
Looking through his entire 52 year history, we can start to put together some of the puzzle that makes up the life of Jigsaw. The obscure details of his early life and his fascination with developing a religion or cult are just a few of the many pieces necessary to understand how the main antagonist of the Saw franchise came to be.
In this video, I'll be analyzing the entire life of John Kramer, including his marriage to Jill Tuck, the creation of his games, the disciples he raised to carry on his legacy, and his ultimate downfall. We'll also be looking at the traps, from the iconic reverse bear trap, to John's personal favorite: the rack and more!
For my analysis, I'll only using the canon material (the Saw films and short films: Full Disclosure Report and The Scott Tibbs Documentary). The other material, like the comic, Saw: Rebirth, and the video games, Saw and Saw II: Flesh and Blood, aren't considered canon, but there are certain non-contradictory clues we can use from them to make inferences about John's story. I'll even use the Saw soundtracks for part of my analysis.
I believe this may be the most accurate timeline of the Saw universe on the internet!

Horror History is a series that analyses specific characters, monsters, places or events in the fictional worlds of your favorite horror franchises.
-About Spiral-
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

I kinda get his logic. By surviving the a trauma it might shed different light on your other problems, like addiction or depression(i know depression could be chemical but still a trauma might cure it cause a trauma is also a strong chemical shift in the brain)
@carolyndamish1601
@carolyndamish1601 10 місяців тому
I suffer from addiction and he’s completely right. Addiction stems from trauma and if you go through almost dying it makes ur other trauma (ex abuse; rape) the trauma that makes you use drugs, you will realize you can be stronger than your trauma and live. Being chemically addicted is easy to get over, you will continue to do drugs until you heal your trauma. Hey I might just do more drugs because of all the trauma he gave me in the traps BAHAHA
@xMary96
@xMary96 10 місяців тому
AND it is effective! I used to struggle with depression and not wanting to live, but then someone hurt me (will not go into details because it is graphic and personal) and I barley made it out alive. At the moment I thought I was going to die, I wanted nothing more than to live and was fighting for my life. I have PTSD now, and while it is difficult to cope with, it changed my view on life and death. I have always been a Saw fan always thought if I ended up in a trap it would change my way of thinking. I do not want to like those who said "he was brutal but his heart was in the right place" because what he and other does are messed up and cannot be excused (Even though this is just movies), BUT I will admit that I guess I had the reaction John was looking for with his victims; The will to live, and change. This is suck a freaking weird message, but I thought it could be interesting for others to see in a different perspective of someone who went through something traumatic that almost took my life, but ended up changing me, both in good and bad ways.

I'd argue he was missing the most important piece of all. If I were a psychopath I wouldn't put myself in a room knowing there's a possibility I could die from something out of my control. He lacked the will to live, and instead of spending his final months reflecting and handing himself in, he spent that time testing others and trying to prove his method. Just seemed like a really messy character compared to what he's portrayed as.

With that bit at the end, I think the key thing that John was missing that made him on the same level as his victims was an appreciation for his own life. He gets diagnosed with cancer and tries to kill himself, yet instead of appreciating the time he has left and perhaps spending it with his wife or maybe even trying for another kid, he doubles down on his beliefs that he can make others appreciate their lives as much as he thinks he does by putting them through the same torment he experienced. Instead of dying surrounded by friends and family he knew well, he was killed by a man who experienced the same torment as him in an abandoned and cold reminder of his past. Instead of working to create a lasting impact on society through his work and philanthropy, he died and left behind a legacy of blood and pain. John, for all his talk of others needing to appreciate their lives, didn’t have the same appreciation for his own. There’s a difference between appreciating your life and wanting to stay alive, and John couldn’t see the difference.

Right from the start, I started making the connections with Kira, as they both started with a self indulgent "good intention" and soon took a downward spiral into god- complex. Both started viewing their work as necessary and ended up enjoying making people fear and suffer, starting to punish petty criminals and even people who were just after them. Amazing video!

There’s a major flaw in john’s logic. John theorizes that putting people in deadly situations to force them to survive a deadly trap that, through mostly through self harm (or killing another as in the case of the dr and Amanda), will give his victims the “will to live” and rehabilitate them, therefore give them a new appreciation for life. Just as it did for him. John’s logic is flawed because his premise is wrong. John was suicidal and trying to kill himself. He survived through dumb luck, then had to REMOVE the stick before crawling to safety. Most of his victims do not survive for the mere fact that NONE of his victims were trying to kill themselves to begin with. Many of them were given only a few minutes to assess the situation while still suffering from the affects of being drugged. For someone who seemed to pride himself of his own intelligence and understanding of human behavior, he failed to account for the fact that the trauma of being abducted, drugged and placed in a deadly situation, would most certainly cause people to react poorly, thereby causing them to fail their “test”. John only had to pull a stick out of his chest after a crash HE caused trying to kill himself. He set deadly traps to kill people in the most horrific way possible if they couldn’t access the situation and mutilate either themselves or kill another to survive. Basically, he wasn’t looking to instill the will to survive. He was testing for the same sociopathy in others that he himself had. His so-called “code of honor” was the justification he needed to punish, I mean help the people who wronged him in life.

Thank you for putting so much time and effort into this video, it was very insightful. The Saw franchise has fascinated me because of James Wan's (admittedly veeery twisted) creativity for one but also and mostly because of the Jigsaw character. I failed to find any other video that was so dedicated to put together all the missing puzzle pieces of his story and psychopathology with that much detail and information from different sources. It's like Dr. Gordon says: "To overcome something, you have to understand what a perfect engine it is. That's how you fight disease." (obviously perfect not actually meaning perfect but you get the gist of it).

his stated rules and his actual rules were never in sync. He mostly started with people from the clinic, because he knew them, felt wronged by them, and felt that his wife 'failed' in reforming them. As he continued on, he needed to look for more subjects, and started to include other people he encountered that irritated him. His original stated goal of reforming people that didn't seem to have the will to live quickly turned to righteous judgement of people and society. His games with multiple people definitely involved more than just "do what you can to survive" and instead was about seeing if people could work together, forgive, etc. He definitely evolved over time, both in order to escalate, and to justify the escalation to himself, as well as justifying broadening his scope to include police that were after him, etc.

Possible explanation for why John doesn’t shock Adam after the gunshot: John doesnt care if Adam dies or not, he’s testing the willingness of Gordon to kill Adam to save his family. Because Gordon demonstrated he WILL kill Adam to win his game, whether or not Adam survives the gun shot is unimportant

55:54 Amanda actually made unwinnable traps because she realised John's tests had made her worse rather than reforming her. The trauma caused her to self harm, her guilt for the suffering of their victims not only led her to suffocate Adam so he wouldn't die slowly in the bathroom but she saw her traps as mercy killings and that the people in them were better off dead than fucked up for life like her.
@Mrdestiny17
@Mrdestiny17 Рік тому
I wouldn't call having metal hooked into all your ribs before forcefully ripping them out after being forced to grab a key in a vat of acid in a pointless act in the hopes you might be able to free yourself a "mercy killing" I think it was because she failed to change, which is why she is tested by Jigsaw a second time, so she is taking her anger and guilt out on others because if they survive and change their ways, she wouldn't be John's perfect test subject.

Isn't Saw based off of the real life serial killer H. H. Holmes? He built a murder castle with traps.
@DarthFurie
@DarthFurie Рік тому
... murder castle? Wtf. Some people are sick beyond help!
@misticadavis
@misticadavis Рік тому
@DarthFurie In the 1800's there was a serial killer named H.H Holmes. He went to medical school just so he could learn how to dissect living and dead people because he wanted to kill people so he became a doctor. He pulled scams all over the place until he could afford a whole building he turned into a hotel for the World's Fair. During its construction he would hire people to build a part and then kill them so they couldn't tell anyone the design of the hotel.Inside the hotel was sealed off rooms, rooms he could pump chloroform into the room and knock the person out. He put their body down a chute to a basement where he would torture the person. Hostel style and then kill them and skin and sell their skeletons to medical teaching hospitals. He was also a grave robber. He was captured and was hanged. He insisted his body be put under 10 feet of cement so a grave robber couldn't desecrate his grave. Yet he robbed graves. His "murder castle" as its called is now a post office. His great great grandson believes he is Jack the Ripper. He was in England at the time. But I keep thinking Saw was based off of H.H Holmes. He built a hotel to capture and torture someone and sell their skeleton to medical teaching schools if he didn't burn the bodies in the glass blowing factory. H.H is a psycho. The best show that told about H.H is Haunted History. He was a ponzi schemer before it became known. He got a man and his wife to give him their kids. The man was his "assistant". H.H murdered the kids. They found the little boys body stuffed up a houses chimney. I can't remember if they ever found the 2 daughter's bodies. But they found the kids letters on H.H. not sent to the mother. He conned his assistant into pretending to be dead and they would get a dead body to replace the assistant in an insurance scam but H.H murdered the guy.
@viylangager4020
@viylangager4020 Рік тому
Holmes got many people at the world's fair. Completely insane the things he did. Made Bundy, Gacy and Dahmer look tame in comparison.
@misticadavis
@misticadavis Рік тому
@viylangager4020 Exactly. They think it can be in the 200's his body count. He opened the murder castle just in time for the World's Fair. Who knows how many he tricked into staying and killing from that alone on top of his ponzi schemes he ran and the grave robbing. In a sealed off room that looked like a safe they found the footprint of one of his victims. A woman. He suffocated her in that room before taking her to either the basement to be tortured Hostel style before being killed and dissected and her skeleton sold to the medical hospital he trained at or put in the furnace of the glass blowing building nearby. He went to medical school to learn to be a doctor so he could be a better killer and dissect people more efficiently on top of giving them skeletons from either a dead person he dug up or killed. Those killers you mentioned look like angels compared to Holmes.
