Spike Lee's latest movie is a powerful masterpiece. I worked as a freelance journalist in Vietnam in December 1967. The movie evoked so many emotions I was moved to tears on several occasions while watching it. Spike Lee succeeds in recreating the violence, the moral dilemmas, the political games and the nobility that can be found in the tragedy of the Vietnam war. I highly recommend it for those who can look unflinchingly at the pain of that war and learn its many complex lessons.

Yes The Chamber Brothers and Love featuring Arthur Lee are the unsung Black Rock acts of that era outside of Jimi Hendrix. "Time", "Funky" and others from The Chamber Brothers were great songs. But the biased white 'Rock' media then wanted to repackage 'Rock' as a white format grafted from original Black Rock 'n' Roll of Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Isley Brothers, etc. The Chambers Brothers and others deserve these later props.

Excellent movie. What i love about this movie and many other Spike Lee Joints, is it can get graphic in order to bring home the severity of the situation. Like the famous photograph of the vet con that had the gun to his head. Ive never seen the full recording of his death until i saw this movie. It was pretty shocking. Had no idea the recording existed. Showing dead children and villagers was horrific but i feel necessary. I was born in 1989 so i had no idea the extent of the Vietnam war. This movie made me want to know more about it and to understand why tf were we even evolved. Loved that this was a love letter to those brave black men, "the brothers" who fought with dignity and grace despite the discrimination they were dealing with during the time. I couldnt of done it. Fought in a war that had nothing to do with me and forced to do so by my country that treated me less than a human being. Why they fought baffles me but they are heros for doing so anyways. The Vietnam war is a complicated one for me as a black person in America. Honestly, those black men owed nothing to this country they so valiantly fought for, so in that respect, thank you to the ones who gave their lives for a country that didnt see them as their equals. May ALL the bloods and brothers rest in paradise ❤😞

I interpret that as not many directors are given the opportunity and budget to re-examine history in this way-- a take on a history that we've seen on film before, but not quite with Lee's uncompromising and passionate perspective as an African American, always thinking and working on what that means in the current climate and connecting that to historical contexts, inviting old and new generations into the conversation. Blackkklansman was an artistic and commercial success so I'm sure Lee had a lot of freedom with Netflix to make an epic like this, and that makes it even more exciting!

"Hey real quick, just for our edification.... our share is also gonna be a million?" "Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit." 4 Vietnam veterans, Paul, Otis, Eddie and Melvin, who survived the war together return to Vietnam to retrieve 2 things: - The body of their beloved fallen sergeant, Norman. - And a stash of lost gold bars they buried in 1971. Spike Lee's follow-up to BlacKkKlansman got me very excited when I first heard about it and saw a trailer... for so many reasons. First off this cast. Delroy Lindo, Norm Lewis, Chadwick Boseman and 2 guys I couldn't love more from The Wire, Lester Freamon and Clay Davis, Clarke Peters and Isiah Whitlock Jr. I can't TELL YOU how much I've been dying for Clarke Peters to get a major role in a feature film and here it is and it's better than I could have hoped. But aside from that cast and more importantly was the story. Every now and again a movie comes along with a story that makes me think "How have I never seen THIS in a movie before?" It's Vietnam but this would be a great story for any war, veterans coming back to their old battlefield to find buried treasure they never were able to get the first time around AND a quest to find the body of someone they lost in the war..... now THAT is a proper adventure story. The movie cuts back and forth, not as often as I would have liked, between the present day journey into Vietnam and flashbacks to our guys as young men in Vietnam with their sergeant. And there is soooooo much to discuss with this movie. I'll start with the flashbacks. In a move I found SHOCKING, for the flashbacks they do NOT recast our 4 guys with younger actors but simply have the 4 guys playing their younger versions. No CGI that I could see, just plain ol' make-up and hair dye as they fight alongside Chadwick Boseman as Stormin' Norman. This is shown in our first flashback showing an epic battle in the crash site of a cargo plane carrying the lost gold. I was so taken aback by this scene. First off it's filmed in a different aspect ration and appears to also be a different film stock. Secondly, I couldn't believe they used the older actors to play the younger actors. And lastly the battle was so good I honestly didn't believe it and thought it had to be dream scene of some kind. It's such an epic and glorious battle scene with a GORGEOUS score by Terence Blanchard like something out of Captain America where our heroes defeat the entire enemy force and get the gold. I've seen Vietnam movies, battles NEVER go this well! But after the battle I accepted the choice to not use another 4 actors to play them as younger versions and actually thought it was a refreshing choice AND I was surprised how well it worked. The battle scene is a good place to mention the stellar cinematography by Newton Thomas Sigel, one of the more underrated cinematographers working today. He did The Usual Suspects, the X-Men films and my favorite work of his was in Drive. And here's his first film with Spike Lee and I hope it's not the last because this is a beautiful looking film, especially during the flashbacks. One of my few problems with the movie is there's not enough flashbacks because they were all good scenes and also Chadwick Boseman gives in my opinion his best performance as Stormin' Norman, this sergeant who was basically a father figure to our 4 guys. There's a great scene where over the radio they learn of Martin Luther King's assassination back in America and Norman calms them down and dissuades them from notions of revenge and reminds them of King's messages of peace. Boseman's superb in this movie. The rest of the cast is just sensational, too. Along with our 4 heroes is Jonathan Majors as Paul's (Delroy Lindo) son David. I recognized Majors immediately from this great performance in last year's The Last Black Man in San Francisco and he's just as good here. Also in the movie and returning from BlacKkKlansman are Jasper Pääkkönen and Paul Walter Hauser, this time a little less evil... part of a group clearing mines from Vietnam but it was nice to see them again. Pääkkönen being in this movie at all reminds me what an insane actor he is because even though he looks the same as he did in BlacKkKlansman it's like he's a whole other species of animal compared to what he was in that film. And Jean Reno! I haven't seen a movie with him in it since The Da Vinci Code! And here is as a smuggler who plans to help our guys sell the gold after they find it. He's very good in the movie, too. But it's all about our 4 surviving Bloods. Peters and Whitlock I know from The Wire of course who are both so good in this movie. Norm Lewis I've never seen in an actual film but I know him from the marvelous 25th Anniversary performance of Les Miserables in the O2 arena in London where he played Javert and if you haven't seen that go do it because he's fuckin' incredible. And here he is as one of the Bloods and he's fantastic. And he also gets the most memorable scene of the movie for me and you'll know it when you see it. And Delroy Lindo... I've seen in him a bunch of stuff over the years like Clockers, Malcolm X, Domino, Get Shorty, he was even one the voice of one of the dogs in Up, terrific character actor. But this is easily the best performance I've seen him give. Paul wears a MAGA hat... that about sums him up. He's CONSTANTLY at odds with the other 4 Bloods and his son. He's the crazy Blood, dealing with serious PTSD as well. Lindo gets some scenes where he just dominates the movie, there's some scenes where he's alone and literally doing monologues looking into the camera, felt like something our of Shakespeare and it was amazing to watch. I could see Lindo getting an Oscar nod for this movie for sure. As for Spike Lee's overall work in this movie... What surprised me was how much of an adventure movie this was. I figured it was going to be a more dead serious movie getting into the Vietnam war and that Spike Lee would have a lottttttt to say about that. And there ARE moments where it almost turns into a documentary showing grisly.... and I mean nightmarish grisly images from the war. But in fact it's much more of... well yeah, an adventure movie. I saw one comment saying it felt like a Spielberg movie and I can't exactly refute that. It's about a journey into Vietnam to find lost gold where our heroes battle bandits in the jungle in some pretty kickass shootouts.... I got flashes of The Rundown a few times but in a good way. Because when this movie goes into action mode it's terrific! Spike Lee's good with a shootout, I had no idea. And holy shit this movie is violent, too.... there is some GORE in this movie. But this movie does a lot of things, it's an adventure movie, it's a story about Vietnam, it's a story about 4 friends, it's a father/son story and there's a bit of commentary about America today.... which in a tragic turn of events makes this movie even more timely than Spike Lee probably thought it was. "I guess you're too busy watching reality TV. Or electing a reality TV clown for a President." "Well... on behalf of the all the black folks in the USA, which are the only group who didn't vote for the motherfucker, we plead innocent to all charges, claims, accusations, allegations and associations connected to the Klansman in the Oval Office, so help me God." And the beautiful thing is... Spike Lee makes it all work for the most part. It didn't QUITE go where I wanted but it certainly surprised me every step of the way. GREAT soundtrack as well with a lot of Marvin Gaye coupled with another dazzling score by Terence Blanchard I wonder if everyone will feel the same way but I thought this movie was outstanding. Da 5 Bloods is another gem from Spike Lee and it shows he's DEFINITELY still got it. This is going to wind up one of the best films of 2020 for sure.
