Dakar 2021: Dramatic Marathon Stage

Today's Dakar Rally Marathon Stage 7 was filled with drama in the bikes category. Daniel 'Chucky' Sanders suffered a minor facial injury after crashing in the dunes while front-runner Toby Price suffered a split rear tyre. Both riders have to repair their bikes themselves due to to the rule that doesn't allow outside assistance after the marathon stage.
Will the repairs hold out until they're reunited with their team tomorrow? Let's hope so!

This is more than a race, it is a adventure. But if you have a critical component damage like a tire, you have to be able to change. Tomorrow will be a bad day for Tobi thinking in that rear tire.

That tyres going to let go , fair enough for a bush or trail repair to get back to your car or home,but at Dakar level speeds and terain,it's darn right dangerous,they really need to rethink this rule IMO.

Trail-riding in the South of France recently, i went down a dead-end. There was an open gate into a grassy field so went to U-turn. I got about 5 metres of barbed-wire round the rear sprocket, plus chain off. It took ages to fix as I have arthritic hands. Raining, as well. Not tearful but angry - at myself.

Unfortunately, whether it lasts or not, he's gonna have to salvage the rest of the Marathon with it though...no bivouac assistance in this double stage so he has to wait until tomorrow evening to replace it :(

And in the case of Toby's tire the fix kit might need to include some light cable to wrap the tires circumference wise between the treadblocks probably three or four rows and a visegrip style cutters crimper tool and some crush sleeves a length of cable long enough to do either front or rear stagger joint areas for balance

Can you take the tire off?......vulcanize with some flame....bind the wound with tie wire.....patch the inside.....and replace? ....or is that against the rules?.......just curious?.....I guess I am asking if it is legal to do the best possible job at fixing the tire?.....just seems the tire will throw the external patch shown in the video pretty quick on that terrain....

It’s illegal to tape ducks, that’s why duck tape doesn’t exist. Fortunately ventilation ducts need taping, so people use duct tape.

They should be able to change tire's, that rear wheel is dangerous and Toby and Dakar organisation know that. Adventure with acceptable risk not obvious danger. Give him a time penalty in exchange for a new tire but don't make him risk himself for an easily resolved issue. Rant over 😅

Its a marathon stage. So all competitors have no access to any crew or spares other than what they carry. Its part of the event. Toby could have not carried on. And forfeit his race. Or carry on with the risk. And lets be honest, every competitor knows the very real risk of just taking part. This is just another facet of the race.

Had a throttle cable break around 50 miles deep. Ended up pulling on the cable to get back

Broke the back of the frame on my XR600 . I whittled sticks down to fit inside the frame , then had a ratchet strap to pull it forward & hold it all together. I then rode it home in poring rain ,a distance of about 200km. The funny thing about this ride was that the 3 friends I was riding with ended up getting someone to pick them up .

Usually they can at the end of each stage. But this is the Marathon double stage, which means that tonight they only get a basic camp to rest through the night, and if they're in need of repairs, they must do it all by themselves until tomorrow evening. And unlike cars, motorcycles can't carry spare tires. So, as they would need their assistance truck to have it replaced, it is forbidden during the Marathon. :(
