Love DahkaBrahka and how versatile and in the moment they are! They have Ukranian folk music as their base but branch out into so many other kinds of roots music. I was blown away seeing them live for the first time by how many familiar styles they evoke, but in a really fresh and unique way. Definitely got some Afro-Carribean vibes from this one.

This is folklore Christmas song, well kinda. They took few couplets and mixed everything in to this jazzy song. But the text is basically: "good evening, generous evening", like Merry Xmas. But in this particular song it has a bit different meaning, more like "nice to meet you, have a nice time", something like that.

With the sound turned off I can recognize the song. The ability of Lena and Iryna to maintain oxygen within their lungs to provide the hypnotic blend that makes you wonder when Marko will relieve their efforts to demonstrate how their voices provide a sustaining tempo, as well as harmony, with a perfection seldom seen. Nina lays down a subtle Joan Osborn Yodel that lures you into the rhythm before She and Marko stop to allow you to fall in love with the voices of the other two Women. They display perfection that appears to soothe the soul. One person who suffered from Brain Cancer claimed they relieve his discomfort temporarily. I depend on their voices to unwrinkle the complexities of daily life. They are among the best of Musicians. I have seen a lot, Mary Travers asked me to make them look good, backstage while I was shooting film at a Peter Paul and Mary Concert in the late 1960's.

Have I heard Ukrainian music? Yes, but then I am a Canadian of Ukrainian descent :) Wonderful that you are featuring little known musical styles!

Dakhabrakha combine a lot of musical influences, from Memphis Blues, to African Rhythms. They perform some songs with English lyrics as well. Their combinations of Cultural influences is superb, their ability to layer mixtures of rhythms and Harmonies at the same time creates a spellbinding aura of musical perfection that has kept their group together for over 20 years.

Have I heard Ukranian music? Yes, quite a lot, mostly based on traditional folksongs rather than modern pop but then, I like a lot of Eastern European music although it can differ widely. One of the things that gets me is the sound of the women's voices singing together as you remarked on here. I haven't heard this band before though but I will listen to them again, I believe that they do tour in the West. Some years ago The Wedding Present formed an offshoot called the Ukranians who sang updated Ukranian folk which was quite popular, I think. There was also a group from Derby called Wolly and the Newcranes who weren't so popular although they were very good and had a bit of a cult following. Anyway, it was a very good choice, I enjoyed it.

At first I didn't like it. It grew on me, and I ended liking it. When The man started singing it sounded like cajun music for a few seconds.

I have never even twitched so much as a moody hip but if I did dance to music I would definitely dance to this. But there's a lot more to music than just being able to dance to it.
