Daniil Medvedev talks to the press following his first ever Grand Slam victory at the 2021 US Open.
Don't miss a moment of the US Open! Subscribe now: bit.ly/2Pdr81i
The 2021 US Open main draw runs from August 30 - September 12 in New York City at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The tournament takes place for the 141st time and is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year. Dominic Thiem is the men’s singles defending champion but has withdrawn following an injury. Naomi Osaka is the women’s singles defending champion and will be aiming to claim the title for the third time in four years. Meanwhile, No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic looks to complete the calendar Grand Slam after winning the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon already this year. Should the Serbian lift the title here for the fifth time, he will also overtake Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to become the first-ever man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles. With full capacity crowds back again, it’s time for the greatest return!

This guy is different, he has the brains of an e-sports player, he went pro relatively late and was hedging his bets with tertiary study, like he wasn't on the pro junior circuit. And that's why he can talk at pressers like he actually has something going on in his head. Cause he has experienced some alternatives. You know if his career ended suddenly he would find a dozen different things to do and succeed at. Whereas Tsitsipas, Zverev, Thiem.. if they had to stop playing tennis they would be staring out the window with a blank mind for years.

@italkcrab We shall see. It will come down to his commitment to continue to improve or just be content with his victory. We've seen a lot of the latter. What set the big 3 apart was their relentless commitment to be the best. I don't necessarily see that of Danill yet. In his press conference he was more concerned about his party schedule and seemed rather uninterested in his remaining tournaments for the year. That's not how champions tend to react if they are really committed to being at the top of the sport.

The crowd was hollering, yelling during Med's serving to close out of the 3rd set and that was unfair. The score should be 6-2 in the 3rd set. And I am not Med's fan, but fair play is expected in the spirit of competition. Congrat to Medvedev's achievement.

@@shikhab2250 I don't think they are disrespectful. Many in the crowd probably wanted to make their ticket money worth watching 4 or 5 set games. Would boxing spectators only wish to see a 1st round KO in a boxing match and go home so quickly?

So glad that Med managed to finally get in a great serve while the crowd was shouting during those match points -- disappointing that some people can be such disrespectful jerks. No matter how badly I wanted someone to win, I would never resort to trying to throw off their opponent's serve.

A hostile, rowdy crowd and the weight of history didn't deter Medvedev at all. Instead, he made his own history with his first. Three straight sets against one of the all-time legends, no fuss, no muss. Ice in the veins, like a professional. Job well done, Daniil, and in due time more slams will be in your pockets. The next generation is here.
