The David story tells the truth about giving into lust. It's brilliant and actually shows how it can wreck your life.

Yep. Then you have Solomon who was the wisest man to date. He did many great things including building the temple. Despite his wisdom, however, he was persuaded by his wife to worship idols. The Old Testament is a series of lessons and failures. The failures lead to the flood and eventually the Savior. Everyone will know, one way or another.

If you are really nerdy that David story is a replaying of the garden of Eden pay attention to the words used. "David SAW, David Took, David hid... etc etc..." but if you are interested in stuff like that go deep in the meaning of the stories I highly recommend the bible project podcasts. Bang on. I’m a Christian, this has been taught in my church plenty of times. That’s the point of the story, he committed murder and adultery but he repented but it had ramifications that went through his genealogy just like God told him. Because of that transgression one of his sons raped one of his daughters to another wife and then his own son Absolom rose up to rebel and try and take his kingdom.

The Bible does not condone slavery. What is termed slavery in the Old Testament is indebted servitude and on the year of Jubilee they were all set free unless they chose to remain. It was a way of paying debts that couldn’t otherwise be paid.

some big discrepancies in the telling of the story of Tamar. After Judah lost his second son. His last son wasn't given to Tamar for two reasons, one, he was too young and the second is because Judah was afraid he might loose his last son. So he didn't promise Tamar that she will be the wife of his last son for these two reasons and not the one reason mentioned in the video. Tamar went back to her home as instructed by Judah, again that is all that Judah does, he instructs her to go and wait at her fathers house. Tamar while at her fathers home wore cloths that is synonyms for someone who is a widow and grieving. She finds out that Judah is coming to where her fathers home is because he wants to sheer his sheep, upon hearing this Tamar has a plan. She knows that she isn't pledged to Judah's last son and she wants to take it upon herself to get pregnant. So she takes for cloths that are meant for grieving and switches them for cloths that is synonyms for a prostitute at that time. Main point here is that she is wearing a head veil and as such no one can see her face. Judah walks into this town/village and sees this prostitute who is wearing a veil and he asks to sleep with her. This is where the video goes off the rails. She asks Judah what she will get in return for sleeping with him and she knows that this is her father in law and he doesn't know who she is. He says he will give her one of his sheep in his village/camp. Judah isn't at his camp/village, so this is supposed to be a promise for future payment. She asks him for a guarantee for this payment. He asks what she wants and she says she wants a seal with his cord and his staff. He agrees and he sleeps with her. Judah didn't sleep with her and not have payment, they discussed how Judah will pay her and she played him in this part of the story. Tamar isn't this poor innocent person and neither is Judah. So she goes back to her fathers home and switches into her cloths meant for grieving. Judah returns to his camp and sends a friend to pay her but he cannot find her and he returns to Judah and tells him that she cannot be found. He is embarrassed that she has his seal and staff. But he makes peace with the idea that she has stolen it. We all now know that this was Tamar's plan, she didn't want a sheep, she was playing Judah and got proof of the person she slept with. The video made it sound like Tamar became a prostitute because she wanted to make a living. This isn't true, she wanted to get pregnant from sleeping with her father-in-law. Plain and simple. She got pregnant and Judah is told that Tamar is found to be pregnant and the assertion is that she prostituted herself. Judah wants her killed but before she is killed she sends him his staff and seal. Tamar honey potted Judah and got what she felt she deserved. Moral of the story. Men need to keep it in their pants coz women who are just selling sex cannot be trusted. The other moral of the story is do what is right, Judah in his fear doesn't give assurances to Tamar that she will be married off, so when he didn't do that the rest of the story played out as it did. Judah is also the same guy who earlier discouraged his brothers from killing Joseph but instead mentioned to have him sold. Joseph lived and as per what is said in the bible he became the second highest in Egypt and also saved Egypt and his family from starvation. So Judah is seen as someone who loved his family when the rest of them were okay with killing one of them. He isn't perfect but neither is Tamar and all of them played their role.

Also, it was Judah's duty as the patriarch to ensure his oldest son's lineage continued because he didn't have children before he died. That's why Tamar married his next son. But their first child would've been counted as the oldest son's to ensure his lineage continued. The brother didn't like that and refused to get her pregnant and the Lord killed him. Thus the duty of continuing the Judah's oldest son's lineage fell to his youngest son. This also was the custom so that that the Tamar would be provided for. Most marriages were arranged anyways back then so this wasn't that strange. After Judah's youngest son became of age Judah shirked his duty to both provide for Tamar and ensure his eldest son's lineage out of fear that the Lord would kill that son too. (The Lord struck down his oldest son because he was wicked). What Tamar did was take it apon herself to both provide for herself and ensure her first husband's lineage. So, Tamar and Judah both sinned by fornicating but she did it for somewhat honorable reasons to pick up Judah's slack. So when Judah went to lead the stoning of her for prostituting (with him) she showed that he was lacking in his duties and morals and was more righteous than he.
@TheFergo911
@TheFergo911 День тому
@@loganwallace5854 a bit mistaken here. His youngest son wasn't of age at any point in this story. Tamar assumed that Jacob wasn't going to allow his youngest to be married to her. This was her reasoning for deceiving Jacob. They were both in the wrong but Jacob says that she was more righteous than him. So the assumption here is that Jacob knew he didn't betroth his youngest son to Tamar as he was afraid he too will be killed. But they both are wrong for what they did. Who knows if Tamar even cared for any of Jacob's children. If she was married to one of them is all she wanted. Key part here is that Jacob's youngest son wasn't of age to get married throughout the story but it is revealed that Jacob's only reason was probably that he was afraid his son would be killed for the same reasons.
@loganwallace5854
@loganwallace5854 День тому
@@TheFergo911 When Judah met Tamar and thought she was a prostitute, she saw that the youngest son was grown and wasn't given to her to marry as Judah had promised her. She had her grieving veil own and he came and asked to sleep with her. He acknowledged that he reneged on his promise to to her.

Why would the Old Testament authors include such embarrassing details with no “happy endings” in each book? It describes the constant failures and sin from Israel’s leaders, to prove the point that no man can conquer sin, we all need a savior. The Bible states this from the very beginning with Adam’s fall followed by God foreshadowing the need for a new Adam (Jesus) as God promised in Genesis 3 someone from Eve’s offspring would conquer the serpent and redeem mankind. One of the most frightening stories is the story of Job. The Devil has a meeting with God, and God declares Job without fault, and sinless, the devil says “let me take his health away, his family, and all his belongings, and he will curse you then” This story is a sorta microcosm of my life story I lost everyone I truly loved : my wife to another man, my father (he was my best friend) to murder My 2 best friends, and the love of life, fiancé, to suicide. Job ends up suffering beyond belief physically also (soars head to foot, insomnia) Job ends up in the end getting a lesson from God, which is very interesting to read, and having an even larger family and an even happier and extended life, that has not happened to me yet and it probably won’t

Unlike Joe, most of the people I talk to will dig in and defend the lie. What good does that do? You want to retain your ideas not based in reality? (1) Read the whole thing for yourself. Not that hard. Sure, it's a long work, but not that long. Or (2) trust me when I tell you where you're wrong. Don't like that? See (1).

No, it isn't weird, and I CAN explain why--you are imposing your cultural view of smoking as "bad" or "rebellious" onto the situation. What if they were drinking alcohol while discussing the Bible? What if it was beer? Whiskey? How about wine? Is wine better, since the Bible discusses wine more often, or do you associate religion with "lack of alcohol"? The Bible doesn't forbid smoking or drinking. It permits drinking and forbids alcoholism (or excessive drunkenness). Smoking is not mentioned.

The only people who've "never heard" these Bible stories... are people who don't go to church. This is standard stuff that is taught in Sunday School and preached on in sermons. The "woman before Eve" is NOT in the Apocrypha. That is Gnostic teachings. Which is NOT Biblical writings in any way shape or form. It's not taught in church. At least not a Bible believing church. To many people make the claim certain books wasn't added to the Bible. Yeah... books that have nothing to do with the Bible, or Christianity. That's no different than someone saying that the "eating ice cream, candy bars, and every other sweets diet" was left out of all our diet books.
@jc-rq8or
@jc-rq8or 6 днів тому
I grew up in church and the only stories that weren't taught were 2 in i think Judges. The first is were a crowd demanded that a stranger in town be given to them so they could rape him, but the man hosting the stranger instead gave them his female servant. So they beat and gang raped the girl and afterwards, she crawls back to her masters house and dies outside his front door. If i remember right, this starts a big conflict where cities go to war with one another. The second is when a man prays to God for victory in battle and promises to sacrifice the first thing that approaches him when he gets home. So after the fight his daughter who is his only child is the first to approach him. He then lets his daughter go and grieve her virginity on a mountain with her friends for a time, and when she returns he sacrifices her.
@_Jay_Maker_
@_Jay_Maker_ 16 годин тому
That first one is essentially a representation of the historicity of God separating himself from Israel. The woman being raped by strangers and then murdered by her master (literally dismembered and her parts sent across all of Israel) is one of the strongest examples of how far the culture had fallen at the time, "that such a thing could happen here" is basically what everyone's response was, which is why conflict arose from it. The heaviest aspect of it being that the woman's master had become so callous that he didn't just let her die on his doorstep, he disrespected her corpse and let everyone else know about it. It was one of the ultimate examples of the fall from grace at that time in the nation's history.

For an 8 year old to read the KJV cover-to-cover would be akin to a 3rd grader reading Shakespeare's collected works. (Wordy, complex, rich and archane vocabulary, etc). The Bible doesn't mean what people think it means. The Jesus story teaches you to become "Christ-like" (Aka: conscious.) You "die" figuratively and "return" changed. (Just like the Pagan mystery schools had taught long before Christianity.) To "enter the kingdom of heaven" is to become conscious. Awakened. Aware. But that's hard to see when early heterodox church killed off the Cathars and others who held the keys to unlock the metaphors. Now everyone takes the Bible literally because no one remembers the higher level MEANINGS.

Important part of King David's story is that he really was caught up. He was out of place not where he was supposed to be. His men were fighting in his name but he was posted up in the rear. The prophet told David a story about two neighbors. The story made King David burn with anger to the point that King David said this neighbor must die. The moment King David realized he was the villain in the story he repented and Yahweh could feel his hurt and repentance. As a result he lost that child he tried to cover and his house was cursed. "THE SWORD WILL REMAIN IN YOUR HOUSE" They are fighting today as you read this.

Judah ordered that Tamar be burned, not stoned. Genesis 38.24 If she had been guilty, the maximum penalty should have been stoning. But Judah says burned which is excessive. The point is that he's projecting his sin onto her. When people do that, they are typically very harsh about the other person's supposed sin which is actually there own. This is an important part of the story. It's funny that your Bible expert doesn't know this.

In David and Bathsheba story God doesn't kill the baby but David feels that God is punishing the baby for his sin, because the prophet of the lord asked about the spilled blood of his servant Urias. David asked for mercy to God and got it and his next son with Bathsheba lives and is named Solomon. Tamar started as a cursed woman (every men that she has dies and leave her without children) but she found grace under God and even though she brakes the law of her times she lives and becomes the mother of twins (From an Erdely man!) why? you may ask, could be the lesson is people over rules? or it was part of the plan of God the tribe growth hence stoning Tamar would be a counter purpose? The Scriptures don't say that David forced her, nor does it say that she condoned it. There is a positive that came from it. David had many wives, but Bathsheba was the one whom God chose to be the line where Christ would be born. When you read Matthew's Gospel - it will show the Royal Line to Messiah through Bathsheba - when you read Luke's Gospel - it will show the Bloodline from Adam through Bathsheba to Messiah... there is much more to this!

David and Bathsheba was literally the first Bible lesson I had when I was a child. Factually, she recounted the events correctly. It is taught prominently in all denominations. It’s definitely in the “top 10-20” Bible stories. It means so many things about redemption and forgiveness and tragedy and death. Jordan Peterson could give a 4 hour lecture just on this story. And he wouldn’t scratch the surface.

The story of Batsheba and the murder of Uriah is interesting in that the plot is high-level and very secretive, only a handful of people know (David, Batsheba and Joab, the commander of the army, who put Uriah on the frontlines to die) yet once the conspiracy is masterfully wrapped and swept under the carpet; God through His prophet Nathan unwrapped it to expose David's sin. It's actually a wonder that the story was written (humiliating scandal for an otherwise a famous king), made it into the bible and got read by ancient Israelites and us. It's a dark story but so many lessons can be learned from it, and the biggest point IMO is God is always watching and knows your darkest secrets.

The believers here should understand more than anyone that they are speaking in generalizations when they mention that "no one" has read this stuff. Of course many Chirstians know these stories, that goes without saying. But I would guess that there are just as many Christians who know little to nothing of the Bible because they've either never read it themselves or depended upon the elders and pastors to do their reading for them. In my small corner of the world, the Christians were raised to know the Word. However, just a 30 minute drive away lives a majority of church-goers who dont know the first thing about the books. And this is true across the nation, and world for that matter.

The 2nd story has a major meaning in it. I doubt she asked anyone what it meant because its a very well known story. The guy she slept with was none other than Judah, son of Jacob (Jacob is also known as Israel and had 12 sons making the 12 tribes of Israel). The Lord made a promise that the messiah would come out of the line of Judah but Judah was being kind of a jerk and purposefully not having children with a covenant woman meaning those kids were not a part of israel. So his daughter in law had a true covenant child out of wedlock pleasing the Lord because it fulfilled His promise that the Messiah would come from Judah. This teaches that God will do anything necessary to fulfill His promises. If you get a promise from God you can take that to the bank!

What is missing in all of this story, is that Bathsheeba had a choice. But women are attracted to power, so she was making a move up with the King David fling. The way we know that they had a choice back then, is that the old testament makes a point of labeling grape as wrong in other stories. There was no ordering go on. Bathsheeba was ordered to show up at the palace. What happened next was partially a choice on her part.

When they talk about slaves in the Bible it was more like people working for you because you had to pay your slave you had to be kind to your slave you had to give your slave allowance so a slave was more like your employee not the way we use slave today. Also when they talk about the stories about David and Bathsheba they are showing us real life events as they happen you can seem to be a good person but still do bad things still screw up but you can be forgiven with the right behavior. The other thing that people don't seem to realize is that when you die it's just your body that dies your spirit lives on so dying necessarily is not a bad thing you're released from the pain that you have in a human body the restrictions that you have in a human body. So yes people pick up the Bible and read it do not let somebody tell you what it says...
