Hello, thank you for doing this review. I am suffering from horrible eye strain /migraines currently, and am considering getting this monitor. I have always had general light sensitivity, but now I am having serious health issues associated with using my monitor for work and music. So I am wondering, should get a version with front light or not? You say you do not like them, could you please explain a little further? The only E-ink devices i have ever used are kindle readers, and I have not experienced a problem with the lighting, but I tend to keep it low in general, and I can use it in the dark on very low setting with no problem. Will adding a front light to dasung paperlike disturb the image quality? I feel it may be the safest option for me to just go ahead and get the front light, and then if I don't need it, I can just turn it off, do you think that is a good idea? I don't have much experience with this technology and any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. And one last question, what monitor light do you use? Thank you so much
@R0W3Y
@R0W3Y 3 місяці тому
@@codythekid1151 'So I am wondering, should get a version with front light or not?' as you're on the fence, I'd recommend getting one with 'You say you do not like them, could you please explain a little further?' Some manufacturer front lights are fine for me (Kindle, Hisense, older Boox, Xiaomi...), others give me a headache (newer Boox, Dasung). I think I'm very sensitive to PWM in a way most people aren't. Even with the ones that don't give me a headache, ambient light is a much nicer experience IMO. 'Will adding a front light to dasung paperlike disturb the image quality?' Usually not significantly 'I feel it may be the safest option for me to just go ahead and get the front light, and then if I don't need it, I can just turn it off, do you think that is a good idea?' Yes, I think it is 'And one last question, what monitor light do you use?' The one in the video is a rubbish cheap one. I've since replaced it with a Benq ScreenBar Halo which is lovely and makes using the monitor a much nicer experience.

Mine arrived yesterday and I can honestly say it is much better than the Tab Ultra C. You just have to get the right settings, it seems in this video his contrast is just too high or he needs to change the mode which you can do with the buttons on the monitor. I found that graphic mode with Fast++++ is the best for web browsing, youtube, etc. and adjust the contrast accordingly. On my Tab Ultra C I can barely tell the difference between red/orange/brown so I was expecting the same for this monitor but I was blown away when I googled "color wheel" and I could actually see each individual color. This monitor could actually probably pass for an old LCD monitor minus the ghosting. It's that good.

Are you on PC? Macs are less friendly to 3rd party monitors and I was getting a lot of flicker and background artefacts on graphic mode. That said, I just tried again and when only on the fastest mode the graphic mode flicker issue goes away. There's significantly more ghosting than in my text mode, but still images are much better. I'm not sure which compromise I prefer as my primary use is text, and I don't care as much about images. In this graphic mode, testing a few different graphic novels against a TUC the TUC wins with no contest for me.
@R0W3Y
@R0W3Y 3 місяці тому
After using it for a bit on graphic mode ++++ I've switched back to text mode +++. Too much ghosting for me in graphic mode at full speed. If I were using it as a sole monitor, maybe I'd use the graphic mode. But as I can quickly switch to the MacBook for say photo editing or watching video I want the Dasung to be text optimised.

@@R0W3Y I'm on a 2019 Macbook Pro, do you have night shift and true tone turned off? That makes a massive difference. I have a Mira Pro as well and the flicker was pretty bad for me on that until I turned off true tone and night shift. I don't think it ever flickered again. I haven't experienced any flickering on the Dasung either.

Could the color issues compared to a dedicated e-paper reader be solved using a software driver? That is, is it something that can be solved with software (which will make it relatively quick to do).
@epaper_eink
@epaper_eink 3 місяці тому
i think just a little bit, yes. Because we see different companies using the same kaleido 3 display but their screens look a bit different from each other. So you can optimise it but not that much because the hardware is not yet there

*What type of mortgage did you take out to purchase it?* Obviously I'm kidding, but thats my point... not yet manufactured on a massive scale they are so expensive. I'd purchase a laptop tomorrow with an eink screen if it was affordable for writing, but currently the cost of the screen is the killer.

I agree man, its too much. One ray of hope is the TCL nxtpaper- while its not eink many people have reported that they do reduce eyestrain. and they're going to release a 14" tablet this month. Am hoping they go into monitors soon- if not then the 14" one can be used as a monitor somewhat or a laptop. And the great thing is the price is in 'normal' range lol

@@epaper_eink I didn't truly believe e-ink was that much better until I set myself a rule, not to watch TV, used my phone or computer on Sundays, but only my Supernote... then I understood just how energy-sapping LCDs are. I can study/read all day on my Supernote, but have to push myself with my computer as the exhaustion kicks in, and headaches following.
