David Goggins: How to Build Immense Inner Strength

In this episode, my guest is David Goggins, retired Navy SEAL, highly accomplished ultramarathoner, best-selling author, and influential public speaker.
David explains how he mastered his inner dialogue to build extraordinary levels of discipline and mental and physical toughness.
He describes how confronting his early hardships, including physical and mental abuse, learning disorders, and obesity, became a practice of deep and excruciating self-reflection - eventually allowing him to transmute those experiences into a superhuman work ethic.
This conversation is a unique window into David Goggins’ process in that it focuses both on the underlying science and how David manages and directs his inner dialogue.
It’s a conversation that will inform and inspire anyone wondering how exactly to go about building discipline and confidence and reach their potential.
Note: This conversation includes profanity. Some content might not be suitable for all audiences and ages.

2 months later, this episode literally changed my life. I go for the suck everyday, working out 6 days a week, signed up for half an ironman, and keep on fighting everyday for that perishable skill. 8 months go, i started changing my life around, since then I lost 55 pounds, started cooking, stopped smoking and drinking and did my first triathlon. Let me tell you that this podcast locked in this mindset for the rest of my life. I will never be able to thank you both enough for

I think the big takeaways from Goggins' life are 1) life sucks, so embrace it 2) you just gotta do it. No more books or seminars. Getting it done is the only way to do get it done.

Theres more. You have to do it alone there will be no one in your corner while you work they will only be there after you achieve success. Be upfront to your loved ones about your intentions and share your goals with them so they know what to expect after you take care of ALL of their needs. If you want to keep the mindset you have then youll need to continue to do those things you hate to do not just the ones you enjoy. If you ever get stuck in life you need to switch up how you are motivating yourself because youre aiming for the same thing everyday and you need to switch how you do it in order to finish the end result without fail. Anyone else who thinks of more should comment below because i know theres more than just what these two and i have said let us know what we are missing.

I was on my level up journey when I started to read Cant Hurt Me and man… it really hit me. All this journey, all alone, was so difficult but this book helped me to develop my own voice, to be my own cheerleader. I also understand when he says « I have to do it because I am not like this » he have to show up everyday to not return to David Goggins. I feel that in my soul because it’s the same for me. I was lazy, I was not able to finish what I’ve started, I had plenty of traumas to heal, I was weak AF… Now I show up everyday and it’s crazy the effect it had on my brain. Even when things go wrong, I feel the emotion but I am never overwhelmed by it. To become stronger is really the most beautiful thing you can do for yourself. ❤

"I realized that my entire life was gonna be a struggle, so I ignored it". For all the neurotic people like me out there, this is the best advice possible. Just accept that you're always going to be anxious and miserable, and use it as a fuel to do something worthwhile. Thank you, David Goggins and Dr. Huberman for an immensely inspiring episode.
@feseabra3479
@feseabra3479 3 місяці тому
Benjamin, it's not about accepting anxiety and misery. Nobody bares being miserable all the time. It's about taking responsability for it. Doing something about it. Making the best of it. Anxiety- when disfunctional- is about feeling small compared to fears, challenges and possibilities. The job is to grow up and become stronger. If you put too much focus on the struggle, you'll miss all the oportunities of growth. Read Tara Brach's "Radical Acceptance". It's an amazing book.

I’ve listened to this podcast probably 5 times already, read both of his books (including currently reading Never Finished for the third time), and this man is a class act, defying all odds. One hard motherfucker. Every time I complain my life is hard, or how my childhood “set me up for failure” I humble that little bitch inside of me real quick. There’s no damn excuses. This man went through his childhood being beat by his own father, seeing people he loved die all around him, and dealt with sickening racism and how did he answer his fucked up childhood? Going from being obese and letting his demons eat him alive to chasing those mother fucking demons, losing over 100 pounds in 3 months, joining the Navy Seals, going through 3 hell weeks in a year, running over 200 mile runs, and that’s just naming a few of his accomplishments. I’m just at the start of project: get my damn life together, and this man’s story is truly inspiring to anyone going through hard times, or those who grew up with a rough childhood that drags them down to this day. Goggins, you’re one bad motherfucker. Stay hard. I look forward to meeting you one day, brother.

Andrew is the best. A perfect example of an intellectual, an accomplished man and a skilled conversationalist. I so appreciate the way he insists on breaking it down for his lay audience. Makes it more interesting and encourages one to listen to the end and even want more . It's pretty frustrating and boring when folks begin to talk to each other forgetting that "we" may not know what certain terms and theories mean. He has sickle cell anemia!!!! Mind blown!!!! That is one of the most painful conditions and an attack can cause one to be hospitalized ! He is a multi-millionaire and does not even have to be a paramedic! Super amazing he could just tour, give talks and sell books. As a woman with ADHD I can fully relate to his struggle it takes me twice as long to learn and to get tasks accomplished and once completed I am exhausted. Currently got promoted and I have to study twice as much to keep up and excel .

This whole podcast my biggest take-away has been: "I'm wasting time listening to this podcast - I know what I have to do, but instead I'm doing exactly what Goggins is describing - I'm wasting time listening and theorizing instead of getting up and getting after it." I'm the "I'll go at the quarter hour" kind of person Andrew described. I love my downtime too much. Goggins inspires me more than I inspire myself, and I think that's the problem I (and many others) have. Goggins is telling us to leave him alone as much as possible and go do what we know we ought to as much as possible. Thanks Goggins, and thanks Andrew. I'm gonna go now. Happy 2024, folks.

I am so glad that God made David Goggins the way he is because what David Goggins lives and teaches is by far the realest information that anyone needs to not only hear but INGEST....un-cut, raw and in your face truth. This game (life) is between you and you...period. Willingness and grit to do hard things, especially when they are hardest for you to do, is the start of all great things! This is the punch in the face that I needed today, right now, the circumstances I'm in were created by me, I can create new (better) things IF I DECIDE. I realized that I used to be my own version of David Goggins, then I got soft and destroyed everything I worked hard to build. Thank you for this interview, I needed to hear this right here and right now. This may be the best interview I have ever heard...TYTYTY. The part that's discussing relationships.....gold!

This reminded me of a girl who had down's syndrome, and scored the best math exam result when I was a teenager attending school. The math teacher was furious because this girl had exposed all of us. Everything was so hard for her that she had to apply additional discipline to stay level with us. Except in this case she surpassed us all. If we all had failed the exam it cold have been argued that it was too hard, or something went wrong with the lessons. But she outshined us all, and made clear that we were just not disciplined enough.

With all due respect I suspect you are confusing general autism with down's syndrome. It's possible for an autistic person to be skilled (or develop skills) in some areas and to develop something like the will-power that Goggins talks about. But Down's Syndrome is a different matter. Still, your example does highlight the power of a strong will and discipline!

Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future.

Didn’t think I could be anything more. After reading his book, I was so inspired that at 27 I decided to go to college for the first time. I told myself for yearssssss I was never good at school I could never do it, but after his book I stopped believing that bullshit. Man David Goggins is so inspiring. As someone who's a slow learner and probably has lower IQ, him being so true to himself and openness about his learning difficulties and still tries regardless is just amazing and admirable

IQ is overrated, you could be a genius but without drive it's useless! Apps like Elevate and Lumosity can help sharpen your maths, problem solving, mental flexibility etc and they are free. Just set aside 30 mins every day to train your brain and you will be amazed.

It’s my 2nd time listening. Every time I hear David Goggins, life gets simple. The obstacle is the way. Suffer to get there & find comfort in the uncomfortable. It’s exciting to think about. I know I haven’t worked hard enough. To know that’s the only thing in my way makes me excited for the challenge.

I must say I have a different perspective. For me it's about the journey, NOT the goal. Everyone always asks "what is your goal in life?". I think it's the wrong question to ask. A better question is "What journey in life do you want to go on?". The reason I think this is better is because most of your life is a journey, so you better enjoy the journey! Let's say your goal is to reach top of Mount Everest. Does it REALLY matter if you reach the top? For me, I'm happy to go half way, I still enjoyed the journey. The goal, lasts maybe one day, the journey can be weeks or months. I'm writing a book at the moment. I'm enjoying the journey. Do I need a goal that the book has to be out in 6 months, or it needs so many readers or be a best seller? No! If you enjoy the journey, quite often a successful by product will happen naturally, but pressuring yourself to have a painful journey to meet a goal is looking at life from the wrong angle. Just my opinion.

@@wrfootball3847 I love the perspective. I’m wondering how can one switch from seeking a goal to enjoying the journey ? I think society as a whole glorifies the goal 100% I do too. But enjoying the journey sounds more peaceful. But the question is How can I enjoy the journey without the goal ? Or enjoy the journey without a reward ? It’s not easy to digest because there’s no goal during the suck ?

@@wrfootball3847 If you set yoyrself a goal and you are happy if you only make it half way but then you are happy with the journey, then don't make the goal because that is just a weak mindset. If you set yourself a goal you need to tell yourself you are gonna achieve it and grit your teeth in the hard moments and eventually achieve the goal u set out to achieve! STAY HARD

What amazes me about Goggins is that he doesn't do to impress, he impresses by doing. Most men that workout or do something, do it full of ego and just to impress others or expect a pat in the back like he said, and get bitter when they don't get it, they want that reward, their little woman doll and they remain empty and miserable, make fun of others for trying to work just to find value in life.

❤ This is amazing!! I can totally relate with all David Goggins speaks of!! This is like a the puzzle piece for me. All my life I felt like something was wrong with me when I get so focused... so I would pull away to people please and 'fit in. Watching this makes me see now is my time to flick the switch in my mind to GO TIME and do it unapologetically. I live from a motto to do everything from a place of love and kindness... this is my time to put on my own oxygen mask first and by doing this I know I will then be able to help others better by showing them how it is done... instead of feeling I need to do everything for everyone I love at the expense of neglecting my own needs and dreams. Today is a new day... only time will show how this flick of my own switch in this moment will play out moving forward. Thank you for sharing this, you are both beautiful shining souls 🌟🤩💖

Found out about David Goggins 4 months ago in 2024. I started listening and then my brain shifted. I had gotten off some medication for my heart issues that actually make me gain 30 pounds and messed up in intestinal track. After 3 years of suffering, I went for an annual exam by a new doctor and the doc told me the medication I was on for 3 years was know for weight gain (30 pounds for me) and intestinal blockage issues. So got off of it last year, then all of a sudden, my weight started dropping off like is was supposed to... lost 30 pounds so far and have 8 pound to go to get to my goal. I look and feel better and now can fit in my 20 year old clothes that I loved wearing before 2020.
