I have to say ... this is VERY impressive! Sure it didn't turn out professional quality, but you still managed to etch a PCB using laser print quality and LIGHT as opposed to the toner transfer method which is just awful in my opinion. Very nice job and excellent video!

I only build my own boards to test a prototype for low cost. I know I'm going to upgrade the board, so it's not worth having it made until I work out the bugs. But I just "tin" my boards, but I'm aware of the risk of short circuits. I think this silkscreening method is PERFECT for prototypes! Thank you for this video!

For solder mask, a UV cure solder mask is simpler and faster. Screen print is for mass production. But if you need in quantity, just send out to the PCB factory.

The issue is your exposure/shadow mask isn't opaque enough. Print it twice and stack them. This will make it impervious to light. I'd also use acetate and not paper+oil. Oil will lift the mask off the surface and you'll get light creep around the edges of a shadow mask.

Few tips: clean the PCB before use (after cut). Just soap is sufficient. If you want to faster the process, just use ~50°C watter for the acid. And sharpen pen is also good for repairs of broken traces.

Do they both work? Its cool to see you make the pcb that way and kept trying until you got better results. I have been using a milling machine to mill out the traces on FR1 boards. Personally I think if you want to iterate on your design quicker, its a good to know how to make pcbs at home and so you can test out your design more conveniently. Of course there are tradeoffs between cost, complexity and time to consider

You made that look pretty easy! I can barely solder/de solder pcbs. I'm still learning about all the devices that are used. Capacitors, resistors, inductors, transformers, diodes, bridge rectifiers and don't even get me started on Ics! Which are basically super small circuits completely integrated onto a microchip. I've been reading up on transistors,thyristors,mosfet,jfet ECT. Electrical engineering is fascinating but at the same time extremely Humbling! I'm an electrician and it's still rather difficult to understand everything. Great video.

Don't waste your time. At this point, making aboard is more an exercise in just doing it, not anything practical. Get the Chinese to do your boards. They do a GREAT job and charge far less than your time is worth. Trust me, I've done up boards for DECADES and can't stand the idea of doing up another one. There are far better ways to spend your time than doing that.

Good video. But I don't think your mesh count is fine enough. For those fine details required for a PCB, you'd want a mesh count closer to 300. Also, you can print the mask for the traces with the screen as well; no need for that photosensitive stuff.

@@Dragon-xd9em doesn't matter, you cannot list all as a creator unless you dig for all the info practically the norms change every now and then as per government intimations but here you are sharing your experience not the world's that is what is missing , not just in this video but almost all creators. Very few are left who share all data for complete transparency which is nowadays taken for granted while making videos. This results in more clutter on youtube as well as if practiced will reduce the same(clutter) and bring you content of a better quality. I do respect these creators but then feel sorry for others whose video production quality is nice but sponsored content is not handled well especially when you are looking for long term relationship with your viewers. Hope that solves all/any immediate queries about the context of my original comment. Objective was to compliment content while being honest about missing parts. But then who cares, 😂 in this whole youtube I am just another viewer writing stories in comments who nobody might pay attention to. Nevermind. Have a good day ahead! 👍

a suggestion, you can use a 50/50 mix of Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide with a small amount of salt to etch boards. It stays clear, works just as good as Ferric Chloride, and makes it far easier to monitor the board during the etching process.

I use to make boards in house years ago, it was ok, if you are working with single layer boards, but every board I designed was easier to construct/ assemble if they were multi layer, so I went with a pcb manufacture, now I have great results, and the build time was cut in half,... oh, and I recommend using muriatic acid and hydrogen peroxide mix, instead of ferric chloride, the etch time is faster, and it doesn't stain, ferric chloride is a pain to remove!
@willmorrison1022

Now that I see how soldermask is made, I have an idea on how to improve this idea: He's applying the silkscreen directly to the PCB. That's why the the open areas between traces have more ink than the places with lots of copper. This tells me that's the "spacing" that's the issue. The only way around this that I can see is to make a "reverse image" of the soldermask, apply it to a film and transfer it to the PCB. This way you can make smooth soldermask. But once I work out the design, I'm buying from PCB Way! They're very cost-effective. The only drawback is the "shipping time". Even when we paid for the expedited building, it still takes a long time to get here from China.
@willmorrison1022
@willmorrison1022 2 роки тому
Have you tried JLCPCB? Takes about a week once they manufacture. Shipping from ANYONE is a bit iffy, right now, but they have sent me 4 or 5 sets of boards that I was surprised came in so quickly. Killer quality and prices, too. Granted, they are the only folks I've had do up any boards for me, but I've been impressed every time. I HATE doing up boards, anymore. I'm in my 60's, and back in my early days, we had to make our own every time. I'm so sick of taking the time, I will send off for them every time, now.
