My dad met some Gurkhas when he was in Afghanistan with the Marines. I don't remember what he traded, but my family is now the proud owner of a Gurkha kukri knife

My grand-grandparent was drafted to the blue division, he was one of the ones that preferred to keep fighting instead of coming back to spain, my family didn't knew much but what i learned by searching for documents is that he went with the ss and died in belarus. Funny enough my other grand-grandparent was one of the many spanish republicans that joined the allies and later he liberated Paris, so yeah, i have family history on both sides of ww2

a few more Units that got a respected Reputation that i know of are, French Foreign Legion, German Paratroopers or "green Devils", Sturmtruppen, RLI (Rhodesian Light Infantry) and Selous Scouts, SOBR (yes, the Chechen Guys), 32nd Battalion, and the Mercenary Groups that were in Central/Southern Africa in the 60-80s (5th Command and etc.)

In times of war, the best men are needed for the most dangerous tasks. Even when all odds are stacked against them, they will prevail. It is interesting to see how special forces and other units, have a strong brotherhood. Partly due to their determination and in the thick of combat. As Julius Ceaser said, “It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.” Godspeed.

My grandfather was a flamethrower operator in the pacific during WW2. He died when i was young so i never got to hear any war stories, but my dad told me he didn't like talking about it and only talk to my dad about what he did in the war after my dad had come back from serving in Vietnam. He told my dad he could still see the people faces. I guess lightning people on fire kinda messes with your head a little bit.

Gotta admit, as an American I'm super peanut butter and jealous of the British Gurkhas. Those dudes are soooo badass.

It is quite interesting to note that almost every mechanism of a land army which is in use today was already known and coded back in ancient Rome.

Smersh was soviet counter spy special force which is the most secretive special unit until it disbanded after Chernobyl incident and its still has not much information about it

Referring to the Ghurkas as “tough fighters” doesn’t come even remotely close to these capabilities of these guys - they still are the most amazing, aggressive, but with intelligence that far outweighs their background that I’ve ever been fortunate enough to have fought alongside during my brief career (Royal Marine Commando & C Squadron 1978-2008). For such a relatively small force* I think that it’s telling just how many VC’s they were issued, especially when being nominated for a VC meant that the Ghurka concerned had to be seen by two others (usually officers). Unfortunately it was frequently the case that by the time a VC type action was going on, the fighting would be so intense that there were no officers/NCO’s left to bear witness, yet the Ghurka would keep on fighting until dead or so badly wounded that he couldn’t wield his Kukri any more. It’s not unknown that having severe blood loss, multiple gun shot wounds etc, was seen by them as a reason to stop fighting. On the battlefield they are, in my rather biased opinion, not just some of the most dangerous troops/weapons in themselves, but easily amongst the best. Despite their actions throughout the years they have never been seen as specifically Special Forces Units, despite their abilities since WW2 (and sooner) to perform actions that even the most experienced SF units might struggle with. Outside of the fighting they come across as mild-mannered, rather quiet (no braggarts, nor even a hint of the Walter Mitty fantasists that the US and UK are damned annoyed to deal with) and exceptional hosts when having a wet and a digestive biscuit and always the quiet, easy going attitude towards anyone/anything sharing some dits and pleasant company, but frequently avoiding the brutality that accompanies any recollections of * there’s a quaint phrase used by various security agencies that tries to relegate the Ghurkas to the equivalent of the local PCSO’s, yet it’s an entirely inaccurate phrase and anyone thinking that the Ghurkas are just an old legacy regiment from the days of the British Empire would be best advised to check the regiments battle honours. Considering the size of their regiment, they seem to acquire battle honours with such regularity that there are few regiments that even come close to their level. Anyone that knows how a Bootneck thinks will understand that this comment alone is a tough admission to make for a lifetime Royal Marine Commando ((2Lt - Major (very short while))

If you do another one of these, I'd love to learn about SAS, who dates wins, the royal guard that shot down about 10 Ira would also be a neat subject

The Gurkhas were so fierce in combat, that only rumours about them made the argentinian troops in the Malvinas/Falklands War fear engaging them in combat, even before the Gurkhas actually entered the conflict; So much during the attack to take Mount William, near Port Stanley, the mere vision of the Gurkhas charging in broad daylight was enough to make the argentinian troops almost immediately head to the nearby Scot Guards and surrender in large numbers.

Not exactly what I was thinking about when flamethrower units were mentioned...it would be scary but I'd worry more about the guys I read about in soldier of fortune...who regulary invade North Korea together with SK royal Marines for practice and psycological warfare. What's so scary about that and what I read? Imagine you are guarding a missile silo in the center of a wide open ,well manicured football field . You have a sneezing fit for 30 seconds and suddenly you see a six pack of pepsi,coke or Mt dew ,with little us and SK cocktail flags in the drinks . Setting on the launch pad, with no visible intruders . If you ever wonder why NK have not caused more problems and stay to themselves , that's why . Dark opps with gear we won't hear about for another decade infiltrating missle launch sites ,leaving little gifts and egressing without being seen and without violence . Now if you think about it hard, you'll realize there is only one answer to this and it's not a Gillie suit ...they do not work on mowed grass very well. But if you are using stealth tech with spec ops training to travel quietly and leave no trace ...now that's scary . That level of stealth means they can go into civilian houses and busy public buildings without being seen or heard... Ahhh, so close to being compitent with the gun info . The 7.62x39mm ak's, used in the 1970s where akm(akms is the folding stock veraions )...Or automatic kalashnicov modernized(translation ) Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy

You need to do a video on the Sri Lankan civil war. Where the Tamils and the ruling Sinhala were at war from 1983-2009. The Tamil Tigers brought the Indian army to their knees, the Gurkhas and the Paras didn’t stand a chance. They were one of the only known terror groups/guerrilla organizations with their own Air Force. They took over the Maldives and assassinated the Indian prime minister at the time. That war lasted 26 years and didn’t end too long ago, yet it is one of the least known about wars and least talked about.

Re: the kukuri: this weapon's oldest records date back to the 7th century, way before Nepal was formed. It is said to be a variation of the sickle and loosely resembles another weapon that dates back to Roman times, the falcata.

In battle, you as a flamethrower operator did NOT want to be captured. I've heard horror stories of what happened to captured flamethrower operators.

Ik a teacher who his grandfather was a flamethrower in WW2. He was in Iwo Jima. He didn’t got a single scratch or wound. He met his great grandkids and died in his 90s.
