Before buying a boat, I crewed across the Pacific Ocean on a variety of different boats for the duration of about a year. I then thought I knew enough about boats, but really, I didn't. Looking back at these solo sail experiences, before setting off on long solo voyages, it would have probably been better to first get some more boat ownership experience close to shore. Which would be my advice to you. Nevertheless, I hope you learn something from the struggles I had to go through in these videos, in my learning process of becoming a comfortable boat owner

365 days I crewed on sailboats from San Diego, USA all the way down to Panama, stopping in Mexico and Costa Rica. After Panama crossing the Pacific Ocean to New Zealand stopping at islands like the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, Tonga and Fiji
45 days I traveled through New Zealand from the Northernmost point to the Southernmost point, then
100 days I traveled by motorbike through Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, then
365 days I traveled in my self-built campervan from Kyrgyzstan to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, then
365 days I traveled with this van through Iran and Pakistan, then
180 days I built an off-grid log cabin in the woods in Spain, then
180 days I restored an old sailboat in Guatemala, then
365 days I traveled with this sailboat from Guatemala to Honduras, Cuba, Jamaica, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Grenada and more islands in the East Caribbean
Currently I am #huubvlogs while doing #oddlife after leaving #oddlifecrafting

Yes!! I absolutely want to see more videos like this. I’m going to be buying a sailboat soon (either a Pearson 303 or 323) and doing exactly what you are currently doing. I already know about the bikini babes, bars and snorkeling spots… What I need to know is how you pick your weather windows and get from one island to the next. I’m really enjoying these videos and hope you do more of them!!

I thought he was behaving in a normal seamanlike manner. He only had too much westherhelm during a squall and then released the mainsheet cleat. Getting in before dark and motorsailing to windward also sounds good!

When the gusts come you can see them on the water. If you bear away and ease the sail you should pick up speed rather than stalling which would help v.s. running the motor.

A full keel boat doesn't get fun until wind is in the 20's. Just make sure your rigging is good and weil trimmed with no flapping to tear apart your sails. Just trim sails and go with it. Hope your toe rails are watertight.

I'm in Texas, working on my 38.5"sloop , getting her ready as best I can. I can tell you that a roller main is great, but I'm finding it difficult to get smoothly in, so that it comes smoothly out. It seems to need sort of a massage technique, at least it can be done from the cockpit. I'm hoping more practice under those reality as opposed to expectation situations will help me. Good work, I like the explanations, the scenery and photography are great. I'll start watching. R
