Deep Purple - Hush (Original Film Clip, 1968)

A rare surreal film clip of early Deep Purple Mark I playing their 1968 top 5 (US) smash hit 'Hush', song written by Joe South. This bizarre mimed performance is believed to be from German TV, where the band were asked to act as prehistoric cave men!

It's indeed a wonderful song. It spans quite a few genres. Deep Purple imprint this tune, especially with Jon Lord's keyboard. Billie Joe Royal interpreter this Joe South tune with South's original "twangy" guitar.

@@a.tanner8524 oh he’s not famous! 😄 We ran a crummy club stupidly close to Reading Rock Festival (as it was then) and used to get them all in (presumably because they could drink in peace and not be pestered for autographs). “Professional layabouts” Dad called them. I think he was surprised that none of them spat on the floor or set fire to the furniture and said they could stay if they behaved themselves. I tried later to explain to Dad that the group of men of whom he’d asked the question “Do you know anyone famous who’ll judge our fancy dress competition?” were in fact the best of the best. I illustrated my point in a way that I hoped he’d understand by telling him that two of them had written a concerto that was performed at the Albert Hall by the Philharmonic. He decided after a few visits that they were quiet, polite, spent a LOT of money and neither the dog, my mother or I were pregnant, so they must be ok. Then Jon Lord let me down in a big way when he hired a boat from us, took it down to London having what must have been a fking amazing party on the way and then abandoned it. So that was the end of that and Dad’s been banging on about it ever since 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

Good times, grwat tunes, hot chicks, cool cars with bench seats (if I have to explain it, I've already lost ya), cruising burger joints, 8-track tapes, amps and good speakers, black lights, and driving slowly in small towns on a Friday or Saturday night, and parties. Oh, yeah, parties... "Hush!" Ha-ha-ha! Wow, before anybody probably really thought about "music videos" as we've come to know them, there was this, what a classic! Back in '68-'69 I was keyboard player in a small band of high school guys. We turned out to be a bit more than your average bunch of "high schoolers" with a "garage band". For about a year & a half we rented a school gym & had our own dances. Local Coke distributor would come & set up a soda fountain, we paid for police & donated to the local Boy Scout troop to be "lookouts" for potential trouble. In the summer of '69, before our senior year, this very song won us a county wide "Battle of the Bands". Listening to this now I suddenly have renewed appreciation for how good our bass & guitar players were. Don't know how I managed to emulate that keyboard solo. As a bunch of "kids" we obviously didn't have a Hammond B-3 but did manage to find an actual portable Leslie speaker. I'm semi retired now but another older fellow that I work with remembers coming to the dances as a younger teen & so does one of my friends who just celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary!

WOW...this video is GREAT. Hilarious! This had to be one of the 1st music videos ever & they goofed on the whole thing...love it! Making music videos was certainly not common in 1968. As a "Mark II" Purple fan, it's interesting to see footage of the elusive & talented Rod Evans. He really seemed like a comfortable front man & the star of this lineup. Boy did things change!

Primera vez que veo este video. La rola, aunque cover, simplemente maravillosa es el Poderoso Deep Purple y esa primer alineación de tan legendaria banda. CHINGONOMÉTRICA. De las preferidas de todos los tiempos.

I wasn't there for this, but was stuck directly in front of the stack for the Machine Head tour, when they were known as the loudest band in the world. To this day, it's a wonder I can hear and don't have tinnitus!
