All four panelists bring something invaluable to this discussion. I bypass Norman (who is of course the giant anywhere) and I want to draw attention to Slavoj and Colter. Slavoj explained (in his own inimitable way) the state of mind of European political and intellectual leaders. Their double standard is so entrenched in their minds and milieux that they are unable to see it or recognize its illogical and morally vile nature. Germany is the worst of all, but in general, are no longer rational people - with exception of the Irish (so far). This is what any reasonable movement for the liberation of Palestine has to deal with. It’s important to know the background and Slavoj brought it out for us. And watch Colter. He is a great researcher and painstaking chronicler of the situation. He is the future Norman Finkelstein.

Norman and Colter speak with admirable clarity. The situation in Gaza is so depressing that any level of clarity is uplifting...Rabbani said it well as an Israeli leadership is made up of children and have run amok, not comprehending the consequences; In the extreme impunity that is evident in the destruction of Gaza, one must look also at those who support it and allow it to take place. But as Norman said, 80% of Israeli society supports what is taking place. It has become "such an ugly place" and the position it has placed itself, "it is horrible" and Israeli society is not seeing what it has done. Is there a "capacity for self-reform" in Israel?
@koyou22
@koyou22 14 днів тому
Hi Hugh, I'm an Israeli and I, along with the majority of my statesmen, am misrepresented by Norman. By Normans own admissions he has never been to Israel, doesn't understand the Israeli mentality because he, "doesn't want to" (see lex Friedman's debate), and consistently misrepresents the history (see that same podcast episode which hosted left leaning Israeli historian Beni Morris). There is plenty of internal dialogue in Israel about the current situation. We are a liberal western democracy, we do not celebrate death or violence, we did not initiate the current round of conflict in Gaza. Israel had been pursuing a policy of de-escalation in Gaza up to Oct. 7th. There had been an increase in the number of Gazan Palestinians, who are not Israeli citizens, allowed in to Israel to work, get medical treatment, or travel around the country. Qatari money had been flowing into Gaza at regular intervals, Gazan farmers were selling produce in Israel, and the education, health, infant mortality rate, and other objective markers of life quality were better than in most places in the middle east. This is part of the reason Oct. 7th caught so many Israelis off guard, we had been working hard to try and stabilize the situation and make it better. The current situation is obviously horrible for everyone involved. However, we currently have 133 hostages in the hands of an Islamic extremist organization who has made it clear that they have no intention of returning them. The way things are right now, if we stop we are capitulating to terrorists. The Palestinian people deserve better than their leadership, but we have an obligation to ensure that this kind of action is not seen as a viable strategy by our enemies. Humanitarian aid should flow in as much as possible, and all efforts should be made to minimize civilian casualties, but under no circumstances can Hamas remain in power in Gaza and in control of Israeli civilians (some of which are women children and infants). I'm not sure where you are from, but I'm sure that you would hope that if you found yourself in a similar fate, that your country would do everything in its power to bring you back home.
@immortalnightbody
@immortalnightbody 14 днів тому
@@koyou22 This is the longest, most poorly-written lie that I have seen in quite some time. Hamas exists because of your lies. Nothing you've said is true. Hamas exists because you and your European ancestors think you have ethnic ties to the land when you do not. No one is buying the bullshit anymore. Might as well talk to a wall.
@pratika6352
@pratika6352 11 днів тому
I can see why Finkelstein is not interested in visiting Israel. In that long comment lauding your hard work to stabilise relations, all you have described is how you are trying to make a open-air prison viable. You also want the world to appreciate that after dispossessing a population, you are offering them jobs, health, etc. We have not even begun talking about the illegal settlers in West Bank. All in all, it seems pretty obvious how Israelis are quite unable to have any serious dialogue among themselves. They have just come to accept that they are "a western liberal democracy" somehow relocated into the east, and that they will go to no end of violence and deceit to keep things that way.
@koyou22
@koyou22 11 днів тому
@@pratika6352 I'm sure you have also never been to Israel, and that you likely never will. You've been so inundated with anti-zionist, anti-Israel, and sometimes anti-semetic propaganda that I probably couldn't say anything you wouldn't find fault with. Mostly the people Israelis are most able to have a dialogue with are Arab Israelis and Palestinians. The people who actually live in this region, who actually have the true and full picture of what's happening, don't make the points you make. They know what the true issues are both within their own society and in Israeli society. It's is not true that Gaza is an "open air prison" as you described. I've seen the quality of life there with my own eyes. The restrictions that are put on Gaza stem from the practicalities of sharing a border with a territory run by Islamic extremists who openly state in their charter, and at any available opportunity, that they want to kill you. The dispossession that you speak of was born of the Palestinians own repeated decision to pursue violence instead of diplomacy. If you attack someone for wanting to live with you or near you, and then you fail to kill them, and you continue to loudly tell them that you will kill them at the first opportunity, then don't expect them to trust you or go out of their way to make your life better. Mostly people are ignorant of the violent history and modern attacks committed by Palestinians targeting Israeli civilians happening on a daily basis in Israel. Probably in your case you even think that it's justified, which is a common theme in the Arab world. A wall with Arabs living on one side and Israelis living on the other seems racist, till you look at the second intifada where Israeli civilians were being blown up on commuter busses and restaurants every day. Before the second intifada, for 30 years, there was no separation fence. Today there are almost no suicide attacks in Israel. The Palestinians, in most cases, made their bed, and now are complaining loudly that they don't want to lie in it. Though honestly, I don't think that you are interested in finding solutions to this conflict, because you have no real skin in the game, this is just some interesting topic of discussion for you. You are Muslim, they are Muslim, you root for the home team, regardless of if they are right or not.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 *📚 Introduction and opening remarks* - The event is a book launch for "Deluge," which explores the ongoing crisis in Gaza, - The book highlights the historical context and recent developments in the conflict, - The panelists will discuss the crisis and its potential ramifications. 06:14 *🕊️ Colter Louwerse: The history of missed peace opportunities* - The PLO and Hamas have both expressed willingness for a two-state solution, - Israel and the US have consistently rejected or undermined Palestinian peace initiatives, - The current crisis is a consequence of missed opportunities for peace. 12:55 *🎤 Mouin Rabbani: Regional dynamics and the fallacy of Hamas's motivation* - The claim that Hamas attacked Israel to disrupt a Saudi-Israeli normalization agreement is unfounded, - Such an agreement was unlikely due to US commitments requiring Congressional approval, - Hamas's attack was motivated by broader regional and international neglect of the Palestinian issue. 20:47 *🗣️ Slavoj Zizek: Personal experiences and philosophical implications* - Zizek faced accusations of anti-semitism for acknowledging Palestinian suffering at a German book fair, - He criticizes the depoliticization of the conflict and the unconditional support for Israel in Germany, - Zizek draws parallels between the current situation and the failures of European Enlightenment ideals. 27:26 *🎭 The current state of affairs* - Israel has become increasingly reliant on criminal gangs to control the West Bank, - The Israeli political spectrum has shifted further to the right, with no center or left, - Recent events mark a dangerous new era in the conflict. 29:11 *💪 Norman Finkelstein: Reasons for hope despite the situation* - South Africa's application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the Gaza crisis is a significant development, - The ICJ's ruling against Israel and the support from various countries offer a glimmer of hope, - The persistence of young activists and the resilience of the Palestinians inspire continued efforts for change. 42:53 *⚖️ The possibility of a shift in US foreign policy* - Public opinion in the US is shifting towards recognizing the illegitimacy of Israel's actions, - Senator Schumer's recent speech shows a more balanced view of the conflict, - The New York Times comment section reflects a growing understanding of Palestinian rights. 48:31 *🗺️ Two-state versus one-state solution* - Western politicians use the two-state solution as a distraction from their actions that perpetuate the conflict, - Despite challenges, a two-state solution remains feasible, but its desirability is increasingly questioned, - The current Israeli government's stance makes negotiations impossible, and the conflict may continue for a long time. 56:54 *⚖️ The need for a moral reckoning* The high death toll in Gaza demands a moral reckoning for the failure to protect innocent civilians, Western media often downplays or justifies the suffering in Gaza, placing blame on Hamas, It is crucial to challenge this narrative and expose the reality of Israel's actions. 59:49 *✊ Potential for change and public perception* Public recognition of Palestine by several European countries is a positive sign, It is important to shift public perception beyond acknowledging suffering to understanding its root causes, Changing public discourse and challenging dominant narratives are crucial steps in the struggle for justice. 01:01:22 *🗣️ The limitations of diplomacy and non-violent resistance* The brutal blockade and repeated attacks on Gaza have left Palestinians with limited options, Diplomatic efforts and non-violent resistance, such as the Great March of Return, have failed to bring about change, The lack of response to Israel's violence against peaceful protesters raises questions about the effectiveness of non-violent strategies. 01:24:30 *🤨 The challenge of changing Israeli society* - The protest movement in Israel focuses on specific issues like hostage release and judicial reforms but largely avoids addressing the Palestinian question, - Israeli society's long-standing impunity and sense of superiority make it difficult to envision significant change from within, - External pressure and accountability may be necessary to bring about meaningful reform. 01:28:26 *🧱 The entrenched nature of Israeli attitudes* - The current war is not solely attributable to Netanyahu but reflects a broader societal consensus in Israel, - Polling data indicates overwhelming support for Israel's use of force in Gaza, with a significant portion favoring even greater escalation, - Transforming Israeli society will require addressing deep-rooted ideological issues of Jewish superiority and Arab inferiority. 01:34:10 *😨 Shifting dynamics within Israeli society* - The recent events have led to a sense of disillusionment and insecurity among Israelis, particularly those in Tel Aviv who previously enjoyed a sense of normalcy, - There is a growing trend of disinvestment in the national project, with many considering leaving the country, - This internal shift adds complexity to the situation and raises questions about the future of Israeli society. Wouldve loved to hear Alain Badiou on this panel, he went through a similar thjng to Slavoj earlier jn the 2000s when he wrote about Israel/Palestine and being accused publicly of antisemitism. Great panel tho, Norman is truly a great man.

What a fascinating meeting. This is a great source of knowledge for those particularly interested in the P and I conflict. I wish all people can watch this instead of watching incompetent reporters on mainstream media. These are real competent intellectuales who report and document knowledge objectively and transparently. People should listen to these for truth. Otherwise they are giving chance to agenda-driven institutions to brainwash them.

Why is Zizek the only person speaking fluently at this event.... except for the Chair Lady. Hats off to Chair Lady and Zizek. Awesome. I need this. I'll pay you back latter. Great thanks, James.

_Ressentiment._ French, as Nietzsche intended (to translate or not being a central question for the philologist), but arising from the lack of a suitable term in the German.

I believe, even only based on personal experiences, that it rather useless to discuss about future state-related solutions. We need to start with material conditions: who is going to build infrastructure, houses, systems of governance. Then we see how it goes

The 100th monkey, if enough people from a society, in this case the global society, stand up for a certain thing, history will be changed and altered. Therefore, even if it seemingly has no impact, every motion in a certain direction is valid and just requires enough voices behind it.
