My guess is that Derren planted the word "baseball cap" into both of their heads with his explanation to the woman. Although the lab coat guy had his ears plugged, he could still hear enough, I'm sure.
@Rhewin4 роки тому
So Derren's best trick was convincing people he could plant ideas that complicated. You can influence people to be more likely to think of something in particular in certain scenarios, but you can't convince them to guess things like "blue baseball cap." I have a ton of respect as this might be an example of the greatest misdirection I've ever seen. Consider this: he has never been shy about showing how he "planted" an idea, so why in this example and this example only does he get rid of the audio? He says it's so people won't figure out how to do this, and he's telling the truth. It's just not for the reason he implies. I can't think of *exactly* how he did this effect, but I find it lots of fun to try to think of ways to reproduce. Heck, he's one of the reasons I got into magic/mental magic because I realized he was veiling these techniques with psychology in the same way old mentalists veiled them with spirituality.

Derren Brown is a professional and has studied all this for many years. The lab coat is just to add to the effect for the television audience - not really a part of the trick. What we don't know is how many times the effect was filmed with different people or how many attempts were not very successful before this version.
@Rhewin4 роки тому
Given the nature of this trick I'd bet he could make it work 100% of the time, but he definitely didn't get it through "planting thoughts" or cold reading. Something obscure, like it being any object this person owns, would require some kind of control where he could have this information before or during the routine.

I saw that a long time ago. At first, I was stunned. But then I came up with a hypothesis about how Derren might have pulled that off. As I remember it, it wasn't just that he guessed what they subject had written on his paper, but that the guy didn't even remember that that was what he had written. The guy was, to the end, incredulous that "BMX bike" was what he had written on the paper. And this made me suspicious. He didn't even remember writing "BMX bike" on the paper. That just seemed too far-fetched. So my hypothesis is that, at some point, Derren got a hold of that paper without the man knowing it. (He is also a skilled pickpocket if I'm not mistaken. If he isn't, he could get a skilled pickpocket to do the job for him.) And replaced it with a piece of paper saying, "BMX bike." The rest is simple. I think Derren himself has said that sometimes part of the trick is leading the audience to believe he accomplishes a feat in one way, when in fact he is accomplishing it in another. And if he didn't say that, I still think he does. But he's still awesome!

Seeing whatever I intended to find out, what the place they live looks like (floor their room is at, color of the building walls) if there are pets around (saw a dog and it's color) if there are other people (saw a woman and a girl, described age and appearance), saw where the person is working at (works standing, in a different location often), saw the car they drive (very unusual round front, never seen that model, describe color). Everything was a hit. Some misses like saw a white van outside the house thought it's related to subgects work (didn't ring a bell) dont remember any other misses, unless dog lighter color, and the car not very dark green but black. They showed me a photo of the car first time I saw the model and the fron was indeed very round just as I saw it. Why does letting him experience it first hand rob him of his objectivity? Objectivity is anti bias isn't it? Wouldn't experiencing it rob you of your bias? Because of your inability to deny the results of what you're experiencing?
@ssppeellll5 років тому
I see your point, LongGameValue, but no. It's very difficult to be objective about your own experiences. Observing someone else's experience puts one in a much more objective position. In a situation like this, the reader (Derren Brown) can guide the interaction based on how the subject responds at each point along the way. So if the subject gives a facial twitch or a slight movement of the hand (which is resting on Derren's hand), Derren can "read" that, and direct the next question or suggestion accordingly. And all the while, the researcher, because they are also the subject, is spending part of their attention on thinking about the questions and suggestions from the reader, and on trying NOT to show a response. That doesn't leave a lot of attention left over for objective observation. Does that make sense?

A suggestion for the first part: Maybe one of Derren's staff inspected the suitcase beforehand with the excuse to see if the items are proper for the show or something like that. So Derren knew through hot reading that there was only one item that fits in the hands. And even if there were more it made the cold reading part a hell of a lot easier. Maybe that's too cheap a trick, but it's a possible option still. Overall it looks kinda cheap and staged anyway with the scientist in a lab coat. And also the explanation to the student while the scientist holds his fingers in his ears, which gives a nice visual for the viewer, but doesn't block sound very effectively, so said scientist can certainly hear the conversation.

Also the second part is even harder to understand unless he tried this 100`s of times with different groups...hmmm
@dtaPacman6 років тому
Derren is very intelligent. He knows a number of items have to fit into the briefcase. As always he would have researched/tested what people would grab (we all have certain levels of similarity). He tested if it was sentimental through the length of ownership Q (who can answer so quickly without um's for some general household item) He can see the space limitations. He then narrows it down to something that fits inside closed hands- coins, broaches etc. He then cold reads to narrow down rough location & item type then goes with most likely. If scientist had given him a look of surprise when he said feeling 'b' I would have beem shocked if he hadnt said broach instead of coin.
