Years ago, a friend of mine who was raised Christian went through a really rough time. His grandparents raised him and his grandfather died. He decided that God wasn’t real. I sat out one night and got in a heated yet brotherly conversation with him about every doubt he had. He’d look online and pull up different arguments and I never had to pull out my phone for anything, the Holy Spirit just gave me guidance, instantly refuting every single point he made. And he never told me that it changed anything, and I wouldn’t take the credit even if he did, but today, that man is a Christian with a wife and a beautiful baby boy. And whether our conversation had anything to do with his change of heart or not, I am so thankful to the Lord that he would let ME experience that. God is so good!!!

Jesus is fake, I was a Christian for 30yrs , having an answer to a question, doesn't mean you are saying the right thing, the fact that you are the one talking to yourself and not jesus himself is the red flag 😅😅😅 salvation always have to do with listening to a man😅😅

But you need discernment and that's what I got from him. He's being cautious unlike so many people who use that detestable phrase "God told me." The audible voice of God? Really? That's a VERY big deal in the Bible but people use it ALL the time these days as a throwaway phrase, as if a buddy of theirs just sent them a text message. He has more credibility by being careful and not assuming that every "revelation" is from the Lord. There are other spirits out there too, not good either.

@johnconway82 You are exactly right. There are other spirits too. For 1 Cor. 14:3, the KJV says "to edification" (instruct or improve someone morally or intellectually), "and exhortation" (to give warnings or urgent advise), "and comfort" (to strengthen; to invigorate; to cheer or enliven). So, prophesy isn't always glittery news. It is good, in the sense that it can benefit those who hear it, drawing them to the Lord, toward eternal salvation and entry into the Heaven to come.

I have had 6 people tell me they believe I am a prophet and it is just sending enormous red flags up in my head. What have I done to make people think this? All I do is correct my family and friends when they get scriptures wrong. Is it just too surprising to people nowadays when a 20 year old knows the bible? I never profess dreams or visions EVER. Which is why I am searching the bible and clues on the internet endlessly because I feel extremely odd and my guard is up too high to keep this up and I certainly need prayers. I probably quote 1 Tim, James, and Romans too much to my friends and family improperly.

@@ohnobo14 It seems you could have the gift of knowledge, wisdom, or understanding, or all of the above -- IF you have been following the Lord AND have been staying on top of repenting. If this has been the case leading up to the moments of understandings, then that would be revelation, as existing truths were revealed to you, as being clear. In this case, it is the Holy Spirit gifting you the clarity. If not, then you either got lucky, they are not very witty (if you will), or you are actually misleading them with incorrect information and neither of you know the difference. I hope this helps.

Thank you, Pastor John. This is very helpful and clarifying very practical questions about the gift of prophecy! Dt 18:20-22 "20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the LORD has not spoken?’- 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him."

I gave a sermon on Isaiah 6, and spoke about the significance of the train of God's robe hiding his glory as an act of mercy on a sinful people. Not in my notes, wasn't clesr to me until I got up to preach. That was the thing that a parishioner came to talk to me about afterwards. Another time, my mentor, when he was younger, explained the Holy Spirit as being like the force on his way to church with his sister. Well, the preacher spoke on the holy spirit that day, pointed and looked directly at my mentor and said 'And He's not like the force.' This explanation makes sense, conforming with scripture and corroborated by experience.

No. Daniel 9 tells of the sealing of vision and prophecy in the 4th kingdom (Roman Empire) which was realized in the 1st century. That ' sealing ' means specifically that ' the prophet ' -- the office of prophet was to end within the 70 weeks of Daniel. Scripture is clear. The intertestamental period ended, and the Old Covenant ended. To disregard the writing of Daniel is just wrong.

If all of this is from the Lord, the best thing you can do is be encouraging. For instance if you foresee a disaster coming you can tell the community of believers you are with “Hey, so I got this dream about this storm! It’s gonna come, BUT we need to pray and intercede for the people going to be caught in it that they would be safe, and that lives would not be lost.” In regards to encouraging visions be bold about them and when they come to pass people will know that God is speaking among them and be encouraged and faith will increase.

I thought that this short explanation was helpful: The Apostle Paul did not write “covet to preach”, but rather, “covet to prophesy”. The Apostle said prophecy is to be coveted above all spiritual gifts. Why? Because by prophecy God speaks by the Spirit to the church directly. Whereas preaching (more properly “teaching“) is second-hand. I do not refer to that which purports to be prophecy, but to the God-given gift of prophecy which has been tried and tested. That which flows from the Lord Himself through holy vessels, and which edifies the saints of God - building up the Lord’s dwelling house. Preaching may edify, indeed does often edify, but it is nevertheless “second-hand”. Genuine prophetic utterance is the stream of the Spirit flowing directly into the church, and speaks the living words of God. It is always authoritative, always clear, always pure, always unambiguous. It is God speaking by His Spirit directly to His saints. It carries those who flow in it. It enlightens the understanding in all who “hear what the Spirit is saying“ to them. It is the “Spirit of prophecy” that is “the testimony (witness - μαρτυρία marturia) of Jesus”.

The Picture Of A Prophet by Leonard Ravenhill The prophet in his day is fully accepted of God and totally rejected by men. Years back, Dr. Gregory Mantle was right when he said, “No man can be fully accepted until he is totally rejected.” The prophet of the Lord is aware of both these experiences. They are his “brand name.” The group, challenged by the prophet because they are smug and comfortably insulated from a perishing world in their warm but untested theology, is not likely to vote him “Man of the year” when he refers to them as habituates of the synagogue of Satan! The prophet comes to set up that which is upset. His work is to call into line those who are out of line! He is unpopular because he opposes the popular in morality and spirituality. In a day of faceless politicians and voiceless preachers, there is not a more urgent national need than that we cry to God for a prophet! The function of the prophet, as Austin-Sparks once said, “has almost always been that of recovery.” The prophet is God’s detective seeking for a lost treasure. The degree of his effectiveness is determined by his measure of unpopularity. Compromise is not known to him. He has no price tags. He is totally “otherworldly.” He is unquestionably controversial and unpardonably hostile. He marches to another drummer! He breathes the rarefied air of inspiration. He is a “seer” who comes to lead the blind. He lives in the heights of God and comes into the valley with a “thus saith the Lord.” He shares some of the foreknowledge of God and so is aware of impending judgment. He lives in “splendid isolation.” He is forthright and outright, but he claims no birthright. His message is “repent, be reconciled to God or else…!” His prophecies are parried. His truth brings torment, but his voice is never void. He is the villain of today and the hero of tomorrow. He is excommunicated while alive and exalted when dead! He is dishonored with epithets when breathing and honored with epitaphs when dead. He is a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, but few “make the grade” in his class. He is friendless while living and famous when dead. He is against the establishment in ministry; then he is established as a saint by posterity. He eats daily the bread of affliction while he ministers, but he feeds the Bread of Life to those who listen. He walks before men for days but has walked before God for years. He is a scourge to the nation before he is scourged by the nation. He announces, pronounces, and denounces! He has a heart like a volcano and his words are as fire. He talks to men about God. He carries the lamp of truth amongst heretics while he is lampooned by men. He faces God before he faces men, but he is self-effacing. He hides with God in the secret place, but he has nothing to hide in the marketplace. He is naturally sensitive but supernaturally spiritual. He has passion, purpose and pugnacity. He is ordained of God but disdained by men. Our national need at this hour is not that the dollar recover its strength, or that we save face over the Watergate affair, or that we find the answer to the ecology problem. We need a God-sent prophet! I am bombarded with talk or letters about the coming shortages in our national life: bread, fuel, energy. I read between the lines from people not practiced in scaring folk. They feel that the “seven years of plenty” are over for us. The “seven years of famine” are ahead. But the greatest famine of all in this nation at this given moment is a FAMINE OF THE HEARING OF THE WORDS OF GOD (Amos 8:11). Millions have been spent on evangelism in the last twenty-five years. Hundreds of gospel messages streak through the air over the nation every day. Crusades have been held; healing meetings have made a vital contribution. “Come-outers” have “come out” and settled, too, without a nation-shaking revival. Organizers we have. Skilled preachers abound. Multi-million dollar Christian organizations straddle the nation. BUT where, oh where, is the prophet? Where are the incandescent men fresh from the holy place? Where is the Moses to plead in fasting before the holiness of the Lord for our moldy morality, our political perfidy, and sour and sick spirituality? GOD’S MEN ARE IN HIDING UNTIL THE DAY OF THEIR SHOWING FORTH. They will come. The prophet is violated during his ministry, but he is vindicated by history. There is a terrible vacuum in evangelical Christianity today. The missing person in our ranks is the prophet. The man with a terrible earnestness. The man totally otherworldly. The man rejected by other men, even other good men, because they consider him too austere, too severely committed, too negative and unsociable. Let him be as plain as John the Baptist. Let him for a season be a voice crying in the wilderness of modern theology and stagnant “churchianity.” Let him be as selfless as Paul the apostle. Let him, too, say and live, “This ONE thing I do.” Let him reject ecclesiastical favors. Let him be self-abasing, nonself-seeking, nonself-projecting, nonself- righteous, nonself-glorying, nonself-promoting. Let him say nothing that will draw men to himself but only that which will move men to God. Let him come daily from the throne room of a holy God, the place where he has received the order of the day. Let him, under God, unstop the ears of the millions who are deaf through the clatter of shekels milked from this hour of material mesmerism. Let him cry with a voice this century has not heard because he has seen a vision no man in this century has seen. God send us this Moses to lead us from the wilderness of crass materialism, where the rattlesnakes of lust bite us and where enlightened men, totally blind spiritually, lead us to an ever-nearing Armageddon. God have mercy! Send us PROPHETS!

What does the bible say about prophecy? 1Co 14:29 Two or three prophets should speak, and others should weigh carefully what is said”. Though Paul is far more positive about the use of the gift of prophecy in church meetings than the use of the gift of tongues, he still believes prophecy should be regulated. The gifts of the Spirit are never to be made the focus of congregational life. Worship and the Word are the focus, and the gifts flow under God’s direction around the focus of worship and the Word. Even as prophets speak, others are to judge. No “word from the Lord” is to be received without careful consideration by the leadership of the church present at the meeting. As John said in 1Jn_4:1, Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Indeed, Paul wrote in Gal_1:8, But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. Even if an angel from heaven were to come with a message, it must be tested and judged. What are the standards a prophecy should be judged by? First, it should be judged according to God’s established, revealed word. God will never contradict Himself. Also, He will not give the same gift of perfectly hearing Him He gave to the apostles and prophets who wrote the New Testament and gave the foundation for the church (Eph_2:20). It is wrong to assume anyone perfectly hears God, so it is also wrong to put too much trust and faith in a prophecy. It is probably a bad idea to record them, and meditate on them. Thank God for the edification and exhortation and comfort prophecy brings (1Co_14:3), but don’t let it eclipse God’s eternal Word.

So often a word of wisdom (or knowledge) is false, simply because it's not nearly miraculously insightful enough to be divinely inspired; neither is it presenting a message that's useful. A perfect example of a legitimate word of wisdom is the prophecy that a famine would come in Acts 11:27-30. It was a word that came to pass, and preparing for the famine saved lives... But when people stand up at prayer meetings and say, "Behold, the Lord says 'I am with thee, and thou art with me, and we are together. So fear not, for I am with thee...'" - it's someone using vague, pseudo-spiritual language to pawn off that they're a prophet. And people do it for the same reason Pharisees pray in public: because we want to be admired by the synagogue people. Raise the standard and you'll get rid of a world of false utterances.

@ramiroperez7180
@ramiroperez7180 7 років тому
Hmmm it's pretty obvious that woman that prophesy about his wife dying was not led by the Holy Spirit. Yes they are gifts and should be handled as such except when bringing correction or judgement. It must be delivered the way God hands it you. Jeremiah 23:29 Is not my word like FIRE? Do they not break rocks like a HAMMER!! The New Testament church are always trying to handcuff the true prophets. They will only listen to the (false prophets) that speak "smoothly" to their flocks. No correction nor judgment God is teaching me to be a prophet and He constantly sending me into churches to call them to repentance. It's always do with the love of God but then when they tire of hearing about correction then God sends me in there to crack the whip. Ezekiel 3:17-18 is all I need to hear from God. There are souls at stake here and only two destinations heaven or hell. I will no deliver my soul to hell to accommodate/pacify the church.

you most certainly do test Isaiah's word. Deuteronomy 13, Deut 18, Numbers 5 John the Baptist tested Jesus' words and works by the preceding (proven) scriptures and Torah. Matthew 11:1-7 We should test everything by the word of the Lord. Including every book given to us (canonized) by men. This may seem to be arguing in a circle to some persons. Those persons need to think more about the issue. It's not.

Somebody help me out. I was told that Piper is a strong Reformed Calvinist and that they are "cessationists," meaning they believe that the "spooky" kinds of gifts ceased with the Apostolic Age. Am I wrong about Piper? If so, how? In this video he even mentions teaching his people to ask for the gift of tongues. I thought that was anathema to Calvinists. What's the deal?

Hi ThomasLu9000 I know this question is from 3 years ago! I don't think that Heb 1:1-2 preclude God speaking to people nowadays through the prophets. This is because of preincarnate manifestations of the Son, E.G. with Melchizedek, or the dude that Jacob wrestled with.

I think it might be because the gift of Prophecy isn't fortune/future telling. Usually its revealing a truth to someone to help better their lives spiritually. Often its involving sin in a persons life unknown to the person saying the prophecy. It could also be an encouragement of righteousness (like Piper cited in his sermon about the lady on the 34th floor). When people come to me and tell me something about my future I completely ignore them as graciously as possible. If I know them and have a relationship I call them out on it as it can indeed cause damage and the gift of prophecy tends to be one of my gifts. It's a wonderful gift and makes making spiritual decisions easy but it needs coupled with love and mercy as the gift of prophecy can make one appear very hard lined and narrow, unloving.
@masterprophet8378
@masterprophet8378 7 років тому
Actually, Will, fortune telling is indeed part and parcel of the prophetic office as revealed numerous times in the biblical narrative, cases in point being Samuel's oracle to Saul and his servant concerning the lost asses, Ahijah's oracle to Jeroboam's wife concerning their sickly infant and Elisha's oracle to Hazael concerning Ben-hadad's health. But, of course, the good or bad fortunes foretold by the ancient prophets was by agency of the Spirit of God NOT a spirit of divination. German sociologist/author, Max Weber, elaborates beautifully on this very thing in his book, Ancient Judaism.

I like Piper. He's a great guy and wonderful expositor of the Word but in this interview, Piper doesn't seem to be aware of the fact that the same bias towards the prophetic that he insists people should not have, he himself espouses that very same bias towards the prophetic but just in a more toned-down, self-effacing way. That's sad because the language the prophet, Agabus, used when prophesying to Paul is the IDENTICAL SAME LANGUAGE employed by the Old Testament prophets. This clearly means that prophecy in the New Testament era CARRIES THE SAME AUTHORITY as prophecy in the Old Testament era.

I don't disagree, just would like to add that the early church did not have complete revelation, i.e. it did not have a bible. The early church had what we call the Old Testament or Hebrew bible and the apostles' teaching. The saints met in each other's houses. They studied the apostles' teaching, broke bread (the Lord's Supper), had prayers, sang hymns and songs, and had fellowship in general. But today we have a complete canon; therefore, there is no need for new revelation. The bible is complete. But the spiritual gift of prophecy is to bring to light the secret motives of the heart. Jesus did this very aptly with the woman at the well, for which she said, "Sir I perceive that thou art a prophet." I believe that Nathan did the same with King David. Nathan pricked David's conscience about his sin done to Bathsheba. {There was no adultery, for Bathsheba was an innocent victim of David's lust.} And to prophesy is to declare or proclaim what is already written in the word. That includes prediction of the future.
@masterprophet8378
@masterprophet8378 Рік тому
@@lucille7069, I'm sure you mean well but you are not advocating accurate Church history but rather you are spouting the historical/doctrinal errors of Cessation Theology posited by Benjamin Banneker Warfield back in the late19th century. Please take the time to read 'Charismatic Gifts in the Early Church' by Dr. Ronald A.N. Kydd to get a thorough, accurate understanding of the perpetuity of the supernatural gifts of the Spirit after the coming together of the Old and New Testament canon of Scripture. It will surely alter your point of view on the matter. Moreover, Lucille, how could Bathsheba be "an innocent victim of David's lust" when she intentionally seduced him through her heinous act of exhibitionism when she calculated the exact time where she would go out to bathe on the roof of her house, which was directly adjacent to the lattice of David's palace - a spot where she and her husband, Uriah, both knew that the king would come to meditate, everything evening, at the same time of day? Lucille, you must cease passing off your speculations as revelatory exegesis in order to avoid promulgate historical and doctrinal error, my dear sister in Christ.

The apostles are not called prophets because we are all called to prophecy. We all as Christians have a connection to God mediated through Christ and can prophecy in the same way as the Old Testament prophets. We tell the truth by following The Truth.

what he say is wrong..prophecy is a word directly from God He reveal to His servant, His revelations..and those who have those gift is solely for the ministry of God, not mere sensing, and not knowing u have it, not confused..for those who have that gift knew His purpose, dsnt need to assumed, but is instructed by the Lord Himself of what to say or do..it is for divine purpose..not guessing and doing what you think you know, rather always what you do is from God's instruction.

If you say, "Thus sayest The Lord...." and what follows is not aligned with the bible or is less than 100% accurate in its execution (not coming to pass as stated), then it is a lie and the one who spoke it is a liar and a false prophet. God has not become a God of 50% accuracy...... wake up people; stop falling for the false prophets schemes and fame mongers and moneymaking tactics.

wow people can endure abuse from pastors every Sunday and never question the roll it necessity of pastors in the church. Prophet here. In the new covenant, we're supposed to learn the concept of grace, which makes no logical sense. We're supposed to allow blasphemers to continue blaspheming and simply help use them to teach the true word of god in exchange for giving them more power and fame and success. We are the thorn in the apostle paul's side and designate apostles and we write emails to the president telling him how to not pander to christians. We also need to learn to fear god, like, the actual one, because that's what he does to prophets, is he puts them under tribulation while they're here on earth. Its essentially hell. Its no fun.
