This inframe rebuild of the detroit diesel 6v92TA quickly turned into a much more serious situation. The engine needs to come out and really be looked at much more closely

And it drove in under its own highly diminished power. All those issues you've discovered and still it ran. Not well but it ran. It's a testament to the skill and talent of the designers and engineers who built the thing. The abuse and ignorant treatment it received over the years is mind boggling. Time to set it right one way or another.

When I was driving motor coach commercially, we had a bunch of those 6v92 engines. I hated driving them. I was not a mechanic on those, so never turned a single wrench. All I know is that uphill in the Appalachian mountains, it was 20 MPH. (I'm glad I never had to take one out west where I have lived most of my life to the Rocky Mountains. I could have probably drank a 12 pack of beer, still be sober, let the bus climb, hop out and relieve myself jog to catch it and still be OK. before we hit the peak.) Luckily, they were all quickly phased out by the 60 series and the MCI 45 D3-102.

I guess your 6v 92s were turned down compared to ours. I drove MC9s from Bakersfield to Barstow over Tehachapi pass many times and I liked them. Better power than the V8 71s we used before.

@@BusGreaseMonkey You know what is funny. Some engines were detuned so bad people often saw fuel mileage increases after tuning them for more HP. It happened not just on diesels but often gutless V8 gas engines too. The reason why people found better mileage with more power was because the engine now had enough power to stay in a higher gear longer. Less downshifting meant higher mileage at the end of the day. Those gutless engines were like cutting off your nose to spite your face. They only looked good to pencil pushers. Maybe they worked out and gave higher mileage in totally flat country but wherever you had to downshift to make hills they were often worse than just giving someone a more powerful engine in the first place.

Became a postal worker during the pandemic. What you guys do is awesome. In California we don't have cool stuff like this anymore. My dad was a truck driver for almost 20 years, but he was the mechanic I learned from. The 1st big rig he had was a stretched out Kenworth K100 with a 318 DD. Man, that thing with short dual stacks sounded like an angry cat going up the Grapevine with 80K#. I love odd stuff like two strokes, rotaries and boxer engines. Worked on many 356's to 997 Porsches. Having owned VW busses, the spirit of what you do is magnetic. Big fan

Interesting crack repair, I don't see that too often. It's called metal stitching or metallock. It's a good repair, just odd to see on a 6v92 head which wouldn't have been rare. The labor to prep and do it is pretty high, considering how cheap reman heads are.

@jimwilloughby
@jimwilloughby 10 місяців тому
It has been a dream to own a late model MCI MC8. There are a few conditions that must be met. It has to have the steppes roofline. The drivers area must be stock. Standard or semi automatic transmixer, I don't care, as long as it is a factory installation, and finally, these guys will do a complete inspection, and repair or replace anything that needs it, including an out of body rebuild of the entire drive train. I know that means a lot of money, but the only way I'll be able to afford something like this is to win the lottery big time, so I'll be able to afford it. Please, please buy a proper ballast box for the NH and fill it with concrete. That mower , even with the extra stuff on it isn't enough weight for carrying engines on the front end.

In theory that sounds good. But, they would add a lot of manufacturing cost and weight. Not to mention that the automakers would rather you junk your car or truck and get a new one instead of rebuilding it! Those big Detroits were not mass produced on the scale of Chevy, Ford, and Mopar V8s.

I feel bad for the owner, chipped timing gears are just a sign of things gone wrong a long time ago. At least the heads are find and maybe it was for the best it came out from the frame. The New Holland needs some better counter weights in the back to shift the center of gravity. You can buy front weights and stack them into the back to balance out the machine.
