Today I'm showing How to Build a slide action dog feeder. It's not quite automatic, but does hold about a bag of dog food and even has a level indicator that'll show what level the dog food is at!
In the video I'll show how I constructed the main box and chute/bowl mechanism, trimmed with aluminum, added hardware, created a level indicator and show it performing with my dog, Olive!
Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!

It wouldn't be Joe's if it didn't have his trademark of angle iron trim on it. Joe are you kidding me. You Crack me up with the indicator to know how much dog food you got. That's going above & beyond my friend. I wish everyone treated there fur babies & live stock as well as you do. If I was a chicken, goat, or an outside dog, I'd want you to be my master. Your a good man, Joe. Job well done sir. Have a wonderful day, Chris from Missouri
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Рік тому
Aww thank you Chris! But the indicator was kind of an after thought. I originally planned to have a little plexiglass slot cut in the side. But glued it together before I cut that slot…. And didn’t want to have to router the inside channel ‘blind’. So this was just the tinkering way to kinda add that extra little interest factor 😉

@Jasonoid Рік тому
Such an awesome build! You have great ideas all the time so thank you for sharing them on your channel! One thing to think about with this awesome feeder you have built....The dog food oils and fats go rancid over time and get caught on the walls of the container (we noticed this issue last year for one of our long term food containers). If you ever notice Olive not eating the food from the container, just give it a good smell inside. Some of the food oils/fats could be rancid in the container itself. We got around this issue by storing our dog food in it's original bag, inside the container. The fats and oils would never touch the container and the food never goes bad. We live in northern Utah so it's dry here like you down south. Love your channel and homestead :)
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Рік тому
That is good info…thanks! I actually plan to cost the inside with poly….but wanted to be able to let it sit for a while before I put food in it. And I really wanted to get this project checked off the list and the video posted. So I’ll likely let this fill drain down… then wipe it out, coat it, then let the finish sit outside for a week or so for a full cure. I was hemming and hawing about if I even should…but your comment and being that you are in Utah extra confirmed it for me😊🙏
@Jasonoid
@Jasonoid Рік тому
@@homesteadonomics you could always see how it goes long term without lining it with poly. It might be the best for the long run though. Line it with poly and swap it out every now and then once you smell it. We just wondered why our guy would look at us awhile before eating and then slowly go to his food.... We were heartbroken knowing his food was stinky and he was still eating it. I'm sure lots of people have this issue! Thanks for the reply. Love the channel!

No I didn’t seal it. Wasn’t sure how long I’d need to wait for the polyurethane to sit so it wouldn’t taint the food with a smell. And I needed to get this done pronto. Nice build. Did you find the dry dog food caught on the edge a little when pulling the tray out? I made a paddle style dispenser (think a water wheel that turns 180 degrees to turn the segment of dry food) that's driven by a servo motor. Works well, except sometimes the dry dog food gets caught on the edges and jams up. I assume this catches sometimes and needs force a s well sometimes?

@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics Рік тому
Haha…that makes awesome! And about the tools. You can certainly do this with just a few basics. Drill/driver for sure. Miter saw is nice but a circular saw can do all the cuts. And the biscuit joiner isn’t totally necessary at the beginning. Just use screws in place of those for the box build. So pretty much a drill, driver and router would do most of it. But for the bowl opening a router with round over but will make things easier to get That final finish. And all of the aluminum can be cut using just the same blades you use on the wood.😉👍

I wish you would do a redo and put a handle lever on top like the ones they are selling now

I was looking into this, and I always thought that the food was jam the sliding mechanism. Have you had any issues?

Great job Joe! Did you finish the inside with anything, or just the outside?

So I thought about it but not at the moment… I wanted to get the project done and in service and was a little unsure of how long that poly would need to rest so that it didn’t impart flavor to the food. But I likely will once this current food is dwindled down. Or perhaps not😂

Do you have issues with the slider crushing the kibble that makes lots of kibble dust?

Not so far….As long as the slide part is rubbing flush with the underside then you shouldn’t have too much along the lines of getting broken crumbled pieces.
