I was tired of trying to hold a giant bag of dog food while pouring it into a container, so I built a dog food dispenser that will make it easier for me.

I wanted to come back to this video and thank you. This is the video that started my journey into woodworking. You took the "fear of the first cut" out of it and made projects seem approachable. You do a great job explaining your steps and where you ran into difficulties so hers don't have to. I really wish I could have made it out to WIA and got to thank you in person to turning me on to this great community. You are an inspiration and a great teacher. I'm very glad that the community has enabled you to make your passion your career and I wish you the best and can't wait to see come out of your shop next!

Awesome build and outcome. One addition I would make is putting on the side or front a narrow strip of plexi glass that extends the length of the box so you can see the level of food without climbing on a stool to look inside. Great job again.

Thansk Drew. : ) Yeah, everybody is suggesting a site glass. I didn't even think about it until the build was done. Maybe I'll go back and add one.

April Wilkerson I have an easier idea, how about cementing a mirror inside the the lid? then you can lift up the lid a bit, and see the reflection of what remains inside..... :-)

WOW, I can’t believe your husband gave you free range in his shop without supervision. Excellent job on the dispenser.

This video is a bit older so you have probably already found your solution but just on the off chance you haven't; you could always add another chamber on the bottom of your setup and another removable stopper. Open the top slider to fill your chamber and then close the top slider and open the bottom slider to feed into the bowl. This would also allow you to control the volume to a set portion. Very cool channel.
@smoorez8
@smoorez8 5 років тому
But if you did this wouldn't it be terribly hard to close that first chamber once the dog food was resting in place? Or am I not picturing your idea properly.
@AetherDreamSeeker

One change I can already think of for the dispenser is cutting out a window in the front and using placing a pane of glass or plexiglass. That way I can see from a glance the level of how much dog food is currently in the container. Aside from that I would actually like to try my hand at building a similar dispenser for out cats' food.

I know this was posted a long time ago. Stellar design! If the stop gate at the bottom is not closing due to dog food, you may want to put a diverter in. A small piece of 2x2 ripped at a 45 degree angle on the closed side should stop the kibble from preventing the chute from closing. Just found the channel and love it.

That is a great idea, We buy the large bag's of dog food and were filling the bowls the same way. My wife loved the idea. Will watch for you cat food build and make either one. Much neater way of storage and filling the bowls. Thanks for sharing.

Nice build, and the artwork adds a nice touch. I built a similar chicken feed bin several years ago. One thing that really helped was putting in a long groove down the middle and covering it with plexiglass. That way I could always see how much food was in there.

Hi April. I made virtually the same food dispenser a couple of years ago for our dogs too. The only difference to mine is a narrow perspex window down the front of the dispenser (rebated in), so I can see at a glance when the dog food starts to getting low. Keep up the brilliant videos. They are always a pleasure to watch.

Great project (and timely as I'm noodling how to build a storage/dispenser). You've given me some good ideas, and your viewers have added more. However, what I really appreciate isn't the project -- what really hooks me is the quality of your video production. Your explanation, then demonstration is excellent. Adding helpful info during the video, and particularly including the "oops" and "drat" events and outcomes help. You make them entertaining, yet they are very educational. Thanks for your contributions!

Love the way you explain things as you're going in detail but not too much detail. Great idea that I may need to think about putting in for my guys. Would love to see a follow up, maybe an improved version with what some have said from the comments like the window and a different mechanism for the hatch.

I am so glad you've done this video ! I have 4 rescued cats and they are always finding one way or another to get into the cupboard where their food is stored. Now I can make this and stop them. There will be 2 bonuses: 1. The vet will stop nagging me because my cats are too fat. 2. The food bill will go down considerably as it won't be an "all you can eat diner" anymore. Thanks for another great and funny video.

Awsome job as always April, ,,, when I build one (and I do plan on building this now) I think ill replace one of the longer sides with plexiglass to monitor the lvl,,, as for the the sliding door issue im thinking of a kind of paddle wheel design with a hand crank (like cereal dispensers) but like the old saying,, if it ain't broke dont fix it,, all and all great build! (Also loved the leg motion putting in the french cleat)

That's really awesome. I've been keeping my dog food in a metal 55 gallon barrel and it hurts to bend over when it gets low plus it takes up way too much room. I love the design and the french cleat method for hanging it. Really awesome. I seen some people saying that you should add a piece of plexi glass. When I build mine, that's what I'm going to do. But my close off is going to be a bit different. Thank you for the great idea and inspiration

Great idea for the pet owners out there. Definitely cheaper to make one of these than buy those over-priced ones from the store that allow your pet to eat the whole bag of food at once if left out, makes fare more sense in your project for bulk storage but easy dispensing into a smaller container to use for a few days rather than mess with that bag every single time you need to get the food.

Great idea and build. Love the stencils and the new rug! One thing tho, keeping food in bag is best. Bag is designed to keep food the freshest and at the right humidity. I used to keep my bags in a plastic "air tight" container until I noticed a huge color difference in the food from fresh to what was left in container. If there's a way to dump bag in upsidedown then open from the spout would be ideal :)

Great idea :) I'm going to router a rebate into one of the sides and add a strip of Perspex so I can see the level of food, and the important one cause I'm clumsy - make the lid into three pieces hinged on the front and two side and on the inside staple some cloth so it opens up into a funnel.I never would of thought of anything like this if it wasn't for people like yourself, great work and thank you.

Thank you for sharing. I've just made one of these for my dogs but instead of the non closing door on the bottom, I attached a fall pipe connection with a flexible hose this gave me moveability when filling the dogs dishes, plus I just hook it on a hook I placed on the side of the box when I've finished.

Hi April, Great work. I was thinking to add a second sliding door a couple of inches (maybe 3") down at the bottom. You open the "top" sliding door and fill the 3" space (you can measure the quantity of dog food you want to "drop" in each serving). Close the "top" slidding door. Then, when you open the bottom slidding door, the dispenser will serve only the dog food in the 3" container at the bottom of the dispenser. I'll make one for my pets. Thank you for sharing

Hi April, Realise this is 3 years old, and that the closing problem may be solved... However, my thought would be add a chamfered price level with the top of the dado on the far end (I.e away from where you insert the slide). This will ensure the food is not still trying to flow whilst you push the slide tight... Keep up the good work, loving the projects. Ps how many times have the dog managed to open the slide themselves???
