In this video I head to the edge of the Peak District to practice a couple of setups for future wild camping trips. Using my Bushmen 3x3 tarp I setup a shelter very similar in shape to the very popular Lanshan 2 tent. A tarp has endless possibilities for DIY tent designs giving you options to switch quickly between shelter types. Thanks for watching and I hope you found it useful.
Do you want to win a tent?
I have an MSR Tindheim 2 Tent up for grabs over on www.messner.co.uk/ Good luck to everyone who enters the competition 🤞🏻

Paul, a guy called pupa hiker done a great video of this a few years back check out his video. He also drew it out on paper which made it really clear to see the pegging configuration. Great video as always, and good to "show" us what happens if you open the end facing the wind 😆

I think everyone should carry a Tarp, just in case of emergency. Plus it can be used to extend your dry area if the weather is bad and you're using a small 1 man tent

Even on a day hike? My thinking lately is that my new pack-covering poncho would suffice, meaning my tarp would be overkill. Any advice? Opinions? I was in fact at least partially inspired by Paul himself in one of his recent videos.

@@NeilEvans-xq8ik I carry a Fjällräven poncho and a few ties and pegs. The poncho stops any weight of rain dead and makes a nice little shelter for a brew stop.

@@NeilEvans-xq8ikit's all about the tie outs, they are limited on a poncho. But if all u need is a simple A-frame or semi-pyramid, a poncho will do. But if u love messing about with different configurations, depending on the weather or site constrictions, you'll have fun with a tarp. Some tarps have inner tie outs for hanging a bug bivy etc

I carry a cheap 2x1.5 tarp. Is small enough to fit in my pocket and is just enough to keep the wind, sun, rain off of me while I have some lunch. I pitch it over my tent to give a bit more shelter from the rain and in better weather use it as a groundsheet. It's been quite good value considering how much use I've got from it over past few years

I appreciate the versatility of a tarp but what a faff! The outer of the Lanshan 2 gives you the same space (it's actually higher), better ventilation, better pitch, faster pitch and doesn't weigh (much) more. It's like people finding contrived ways to build furniture from pallets. Just because you can do it, doesn't make it a great idea/solution.
@poplarridge9719
@poplarridge9719 Місяць тому
It's a good option for people who have tarps but don't have a Lanshan 2. I'll never buy a tent, and this setup works well with a tarp for crappy weather. I have used it. It sets up in about 3 minutes, and if you fly the bottom of the tarp a little higher than Paul did, it has a ton of room and pretty good ventilation. Of the fully enclosed configurations I've used, this is my favorite

I love my ultralight 3x3. It's so versatile, there's 3 'main' configurations I use: the ol' bivvi bag hideaway, a basic lean-to, and one similar to this when you opened the end out. 2 trekking poles and a tarp with guys and you're set for the night.

Great tarp tent video! My son swears by using a tarp. My RECON MARINES son SHOWED ME A TIP that's useful when tarp style camping. Take with you four extra pegs and paracord plus a second ground tarp. In your living area inside peg each corner and lay your sevond ground tarp putting the paracord through the tarp holes. Pull the strings up so that the edges make an inside basement in your living area. It will be as deep as the pegs are exposed halfway. Great when rain comes to keep you much drier from ground runoff. Be sure to peg your pegs away from the sides to reduce top area runoff and moisture from condensation and allowing for airflow. Worth the extra weight when conditions get windy and stormy bad.

One of the first video I saw from you was a tarp configuration video and you showed I think three different setups. I have packed a tarp ever since, and I enjoy watching them way better then the bivy or hammock videos. I just don’t enjoy those types and usually skip viewing them from all the people I follow. I threw a DD tarp over my single skin S15 lightwave in anticipation of a thunderstorm in the evening and by god did it pour down for three solid hours of some of the heaviest rain you can imagine. It did the job of keeping it out but it still wetted out the tarp which then proceeded to wet out the tent skin because it was in direct contact with it. So I still ended up with a soaking wet tent to pack up in the morning.

I've used those solid fuel blocks before and also reckon they have a ~10 minute burn. Which I find is enough to do one thing, but if you're looking to have a coffee and a hot meal, or a hot meal with two separate components, you'd need more than one block and that starts to get a bit expensive. I've not looked at cutting them in half to get a ~5 minute burn (probably enough for just a coffee), as I'd be wary of having something that flammable just loose. At least the packaging offers some protection. I also got a stove for these blocks which weighs very little and you can fit exactly one block in it quite nicely.

Hiya Paul, great vid as usual . Am I right thinking the only difference between the Hexpeak shelter which ive tried before, and the Lanshan 2 cofigurations is :- 1 pole in the Hexpeak and 2 in the Lanshan and all the rest of the pegging is the same . Thanks

16:10 - my experience would suggest it would be a bit damp given the width.

Bit faffy for me but nice set up when its done. I have a flying squirrel tarp that i would like to use as a super shelter so hopefully I can use some ideas from this video. That bushmen tarp does look good. Thanks Paul.

Agreed. It takes a minute or two more than the tent but a tarp can be pitched in so many ways depending on conditions and environment. Very versatile where as tents are a one trick pony. Don’t get my wrong, I love my tents but a tarp has its place 👍🏻
