Start to finish build of our OFF GRID NO ELECTRICITY NEEDED WOOD FIRED HOT TUB (IBC CONTAINER)
This is an awesome addition to the homestead! It’s actually our second wood fired hot tub build but the first we did not have any videos made while we did it. The first build we did not use the barrel and the coil was simply sitting on the ground and the fire was made inside it! After using both we can agree that without the barrel is more efficient! The open and exposed coil design can be seen in it own video of setting up the first home built wood fired hot tub
We cut and cleaned the IBC Container, built the wooden frame around the top and bottom of the cage, insulated the floor before putting the plastic tub back in, placed the insulation on the outside between the two wooden frames and secured it with the fence boards as the finished outside of the hot tub. Once the plastic container was back inside the cage we heated the plastic with a heat gun until it was able to bend, we then folded the container down to the wooden lip and secured it with screws. To finish the top we used large 10” wide boards to double as a ledge/shelf for glasses and towels.
The copper coil was formed by shaping it around a 5 gallon bucket and placed inside the barrel after the barrel had the door and chimney hole cut into it.

Hey. Make sure you use a food safe tote. I think these people used one that held spray foam insulation liquid chemicals. Dont do that. There are tonnes of food safe totes out there.
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms Місяць тому
Yes indeed you want to be sure to know what was in the tote prior to converting them! Ours is a food grade tote; ours contained cornmeal prior to the reuse; we also recommend paying the extra for the ones already cleaned as it took us HOURS of cleaning and scrubbing to get it clean and disinfected!

What an amazing thing to build! You two are so resourceful! I can’t state how much I enjoy your channel and seeing what you come up with each video! Also, the little goat is adorable just hanging out with you guys. Do you still have him? Haven’t seen him in any newer videos

Did you have a problem with condensation? I built something similar, and have lot of condensation dripping into coals.
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms Місяць тому
This is not an issue we had come across! Is your coil metal all the way into the tub or does it go from metal in the burn area to plastic lines into the tub? Not sure if that would make a difference but ours are plastic lines coming from the tub to the copper coil on the bottom intake line and then copper coil to plastic lines on the top input
@armandniosi7657
@armandniosi7657 Місяць тому
@@MacCustoms copper coils inside burn barrel.
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms Місяць тому
@armandniosi7657 ours is an exposed coil currently but even when we did have it inside a burn barrel we hadn’t noticed any condensation issue. Sorry we can’t offer any suggestions as it wasn’t something we’ve come across
@hanshananigan1233
@hanshananigan1233 5 місяців тому
Thanks for the video! Does the intake pipe need to slope downward from the tub to the firebox to activate the siphoning?
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms 5 місяців тому
It doesn’t need to downslope but in most cases there will end up being one because of the elevation if the ibc container being lifted with the insulation on bottom and where the metal encasement has slight elevation to it and the coil will be placed on the ground.

Why did you put those 3 saw blades in that section with the water piping.. is it to do with air flow? Do you need air flow in those fire drums? more than was shown, just asking because i want to build one. Nice video btw.
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms Рік тому
We used the saw blades to force the heat and smoke to work harder to get out of the chimney instead of being able to flow straight out! We would actually recommend scrapping the barrel and making the coil directly on the ground! We have another video of the “on ground coil” and it heats it up much better as the fire is built directly in the middle of the coil and not below it!!

Can someone point me in the direction of where you can get that copper tubing and how they coiled it?
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms 8 місяців тому
The coil came from a local home hardware store. They ordered in the 60 foot roll for us. We used 30 feet for this coil 8:56 shows us wrapping it around a 5 gallon bucket to make the shape.

The water just flows by itself? Or is there a pump?
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms 5 місяців тому
There is no pump. It’s cycles by means of thermosyphoning! That’s what makes it completely electricity free and perfect for off grid use!!

@tippyzuk1 Рік тому
@@MacCustoms Great to know for when I build mine!
@MacCustoms
@MacCustoms Рік тому
There’s a video link in the description to our first build with the exposed coil! That one was much more efficient! When we removed the coil from the barrel we did end up placing it inside an eighteen wheeler rim to hold the coals around the coil. We are in a windy area and the fully exposed did loose some efficiency with the wind so we thought the barrel would be ideal but it wasn’t quite what we were hoping so we did the rim idea and that is A1!!

How long do you expect the burn barrel to last? Been working on plans for a shower but i was going to use the gaylord to collect water that fills a barrel over a barrel for heat.
