Just got back home from watching Monfils vs Hubi in person, it was an atmosphere I will never forget. A truly fair/even crowd, for 2 of the most respectful players on tour. Both players displayed athleticism, persistence, and sportsmanship. It was a very very competitive bagel and absolute madness from Gael, he never gave up in any points, returning overhead smashes left and right, and blasting 138 mph serves. I am not sure if the clip has Hubi’s double tweener, but it was fun and practical as well. The worst part of the match was someone had to lose. But still, when Hubi hit a fun jumping dunk shot to win a game, since it was a change over, Gael gave him a high 5 when they crossed the net.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but his backhand has gotten better in the last 3-4 years, he doesn't use slice on every shot anymore

@@TheseHoesAreLoyal3 or 4 years ago he was using the slice almost constantly. He has only abandoned the habit in the last year, and only partially. He still has the slice as his default, safe backup whenever he's not comfortable with the topspin. He was hitting the topspin backhand a lot more frequently than he is hitting it now when he was in his prime (from 2013 to 2017). It was his default backhand shot that he was hitting constantly even from the most difficult positions, he could rally almost endlessly with it (even against someone like Nadal) when he was at his best.

@@TheseHoesAreLoyalI was watching almost every match he played in that period, and I know he was really hitting the topspin backhand a lot more frequently. He was younger, faster, physically more durable, more confident, and, as a result, the topspin was his default backhand at his peak. In fact, many one-handers begin slicing more when they get older, it's normal.

@@impopquiz For some odd reason I kind of believe that too, and I never thought I would say that. Dimitrov really improved his backhand in the last 3-4 years, he really learned to not slice that much anymore and became more consistent in his backhand side. In terms of peak level, unbothered and confident, Federer's backhand is still better. But Dimitrov's backhand now is more consistent than Federer's when he was still active on the tour.

Totally agree. Such a waste of talent… Two clear examples of tennists’ involution over the years. Back when they were teenagers, they were playing free-minded and they were reaching astonishing game levels.. Now they are totally stuck in their mental limits.

Indian Wells is the unofficial 5th grand slam! 🏜️ Matches are all competitive and outstanding. Courts are very unique because it’s a hard court but the ball moves slow like a clay court because of the desert humidity. It takes a high quality player to take home the Indian Wells title. The crowd is classy, passionate and knowledgeable about tennis because they’d have to drive hours into the middle of a desert to watch the matches in the beautiful California Palm Springs Desert. Been going to this tournament the past 3 years and I am always overwhelmed by the beauty of the desert and mesmerized with the quality of tennis. This is a true tennis paradise for both players and tennis fans!

On the contrary, the desert air is very dry in Indian Wells (as opposed to the wet ocean air in Miami), that's why the ball is traveling much faster through the air. What made it slow was the extremely slow, gritty court. That's what always made the tournament so unique, balls moving very quicly through the dry desert air, but slowing down significantly upon the contact with the court, with very high bounces. But they have made the courts faster this year (the tournament director himself said that, and other people have confirmed it). The conditions are still unique and some players struggle with it.

I think that's just not possible. His whole style is risky, with big looping strokes and a lot of movement during the shot. And he also doesn't have the mental game, which is hard to develop later in your career.

Monfils confidence is thru the roof. His game is all in flow with big first serves, big FH and 20 year old movement. He’s gotten more crafty with off pace shots as well. Married life makes all the difference.

Shapovalov has been out of form for some time now. Musetti has also been in a poor run of form - probably explains the loud scream at the end. Hard to explain Shapovalov's slump in form - hopefully he gets his mojo back as he's some player and is really exciting to watch.

Happy to see Musetti win. Musetti should be friend with Sinner, they are both from Italy and at about same age . I have been watching them both, but in the last couple of years Sinner is like from 7 to 9.5, but Musetti is like from 7 to 5.5 in their own and overall games. How close are they? Anyone knows? Sinner could give him some advice and support. Musetti has so much talent, I do not want him waste it and fade it out!

They're not very close. Sinner is from South Tyrol, which is really closer to Austria than to Italy, Musetti seems to be really focused on his close team (his coach started with him when Lorenzo was 7) and his family (which he has been preferring to his tennis career in the last couple of years; he'll soon become a father and he says that's his main priority for this year). They respect each other, but they're not very close friends. Or, as Musetti puts it, ""We are close, without being friends".

I went to Indian wells last week. I'm sad I missed all these top rankers but I love the atmosphere and the court condition and amenity. It's much better than Roland Garros. Roland Garros' experience is unforgettable but I didn't really enjoy the amenities and all that waiting on the street. Indian wells is so clean and well organized. Most of all I love the fast paced courts.

It really says something about how slow and boring the courts are that these highlights need to speed up the rallies to like at least 1.5x faster. I’m really starting to get tired of slow hard courts

when Dimitrov's backhand is on par for the day he ca be rated in the top 5, but sadly for single handed backhand players, he does not have the variety Federer pocesses, & Monfils show what good footwork, anticipation, variety in shots can do in a match against players who are mainly ball bashers & finally Novak, well he has the shots, fitness, & above all a mind that allow him to find the weakness of his opponents of the day..................ALL 3 WINNERS OF THE DAY HAVE DIFFERENT ABILITIES THAT WHY TENNIS OF THIS CAT. So happy for Monfils, I love that guy, and who doesn't? Attractive game, he always seems to have fun to the max, he's very close to retirement, and on top of all he's brave on court. I would like to see him winning one last Masters, although I root for No1e.

Shapo needs to cut out those double faults and focus on finishing off points better...Musetti looked good today but for my money he's still too defensive to make a deep run, although he has been playing doubles more, hopefully that gets him more confident to move forwards and take the ball early. Also great from Dimitrov! His level has been steadily rising recently.
