I haven't bought one yet, but it is on the radar. Videos like this are a big help. I ride a trike and mainly want to use it to power daytime running lights and to keep my phone topped off.

Definitely engage that thing on long descents. Make the most of the ability to decouple uphill. Must have all the rectification and voltage regulation in one package. Can it go the distance and perform in wet weather? Time to test now.

Interesting. Re modeling of the old bottle dynamo. Bit ugly looking but everything comes at a cost. Can be easily removed and an alternative to the hub dynamo. Good video.

I've been looking at the pedalcell on UKposts recently maybe to use on LEL , so it'll be interesting to see how you rate it. Are you looking at charging your lights off the power bank during the day Best of luck with the training

Pretty much for charging lights in the day, but mostly for powering the GPS units. I am pretty good when it comes to lights I use the lowest setting possible. I'll be taking a compact 4 USB hub when checking into hotels as well every 3-4 days.

What bit of kit do you use to film yourself? A go pro mounted on an arm? - how are you doing that. Your vids are super impressive - keep them coming mate!

Hi Edward, it's a GoPro Hero 6, I use a wind shield to block all the unwanted noise. Mount-wise I usually use the official GoPro selfie stick, from time to time I'll also use the grill mouth mount as well, especially useful on fast descents. I used to use an arm point years ago early on in my vlogging - arm kept getting tired lol Thanks for watching Ed, glad your enjoying my channel!

Yeah Anker do those solar panels that you can hang off your panniers. Did briefly entertain the idea!

Did you buy yours from America, or though a UK importer, I saw someone else get one, and stung with import duty, and postage, ended up dearer than from the UK importer, who sell it for £300.

Dynamo hub all day long for me. Used dynamo on LEL 2017 and zero issues.

The black box, nope, its pretty ugly looking that thing, but no it's were the cable runs in from the fork, the power gets sent to the box and it gets converted into "power", at the box there is two USB ports so you can plug in say a phone into the quick charging port and a power bank into the other.

I have a dynamo hub. Can honestly say it makes zero noticeable difference to my speed. This “new” device appears to be a throwback to the bottle dynamos we all has as kids. I honestly can’t see where this is better. It’s bulkier and takes up valuable space on the bike with its extra box (either on the bars or in a bag), my dynamo takes up zero space outside the hub and my front light has a USB out cable for charging a battery pack. And, whilst not a concern for lots of people, I think this is just ugly on the forks. You also have to consider whether the o-ring will slip in muddy or rainy conditions. Sorry, this is a “no” for me. Hub dynamos are ubiquitous for people who want to self-power for a reason. The only way this can charge faster than a dynamo is by drawing more power, and therefore applying more drag. If you’re riding ultra distance, and on the bike for 10+ hours a day, you don’t need to worry about fast charging. Interested to see how you get on though.

I’ve never tried it to compare the drag it the reason it generates more power is due to the relative rotational velocity at the wheel rim compared to the Hub not by applying more force.

@@4th_Lensman_of_the_apocalypse no, I’m not stuck at all. Every watt that a Dynamo generates has to be taken from the wheel. Whether it takes a watt from the centre or from the outside makes no difference. If a Dynamo at the rim is generating 5w then assuming similar efficiency, it’ll generate the same drag as a Dynamo generating 5w at the hub. That’s basic physics (really).

Yeah power bank technology has improved massively, I seldom use the PedalCell anymore. I first took it with me during an ultra race in 2022 in the Netherlands and again during the TCR 2023. Found it more practical to carry to a couple medium-capacity power banks and when running low simply stop in a hotel and quick recharge both overnight.
