Their quartet during the war was jokingly named the "Hawaiian TRO": Artem Dymyd, Dmytro Pashchuk, Viktor-Mykola Havryliuk, and Roman Lozinsky. Some of them crossed oceans to fulfill their duty to their homeland, joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine without hesitation. Unfortunately, the war decided to separate them. Instead of well-deserved breaks, they attended their comrades' funerals.
The hero of this conversation is Dmytro Pashchuk, an entrepreneur, scout, and military serviceman with the nickname "Franzuz" (Frenchman). This interview took place after his friend Artem Dymyd passed away in the summer of 2020, defending Ukraine from russian occupiers. During our conversation, we discussed what drives young people to take up arms, whether one can get used to the roar of cannons which mark the last moments of our heroes' lives, and what gives the strength to endure the pain of loss. Sadly, on March 12, 2023, while carrying out a combat mission on the Kherson front, Dmytro gave his life for Ukraine. Honoring the memory of this Hero, we publish this conversation as part of the “Little Stories of a Big War” project by the Ukrainian Catholic University.
Eternal memory to our Heroes!
