I'm 34. I just got my GED on September 7th 2023. All I've ever worked in is warehouse. I'm gonna give myself a shot at being an electrician or welding. MATH IS HARD FOR ME. I'd rather try and fail and try again than to never know and hold myself back for another 15 years. Good luck to you. It took me 3 years to get my GED, 2 months to get my CDL and lost it in 1 yr due to a bad decision while dealing with life. Things happen but if you don't try you'll be never know. For me it's been God's saving grace to have a new mindset & outlook on life. I pray you keep fighting for yourself. I dropped out of school in 9th grade. You can do it.

I’m 20 and don’t know my times table math has always been hard for me ever since being bullied in school and was really never comfortable working in class so I never did any work I’m hoping I can be brave enough to try something new all my life it’s felt like it I’m on hard mode I never had a dad to ask questions and learn off of I really hope I can man up
@RichieDevine8
@RichieDevine8 4 місяці тому
@@ChrisPLoops20 years old as well and can confidently say that I’ve neglected the early stages of my life. I was a failing student throughout a majority of my school years due to a mix of bad teaching and my learning disability in math that went unnoticed. Due to this, Ive had the daily struggles throughout my work setting and just ultimate regret for not even attempting to better myself in any form (Depression). With all the self doubt and pity over the years, I became a shell of myself. However, with this consistent self sabotage ,I finally said enough and applied to my local ibew electrical union which to my surprise, worked out so much better than anticipated. The point I make here is that whatever you’re going through whether it be a cognitive problem or not physically capable, I want you to completely erase whatever it is. I am living proof of the sheer magnitude that discipline can guide you through any obstacle. Become a fucking electrican or whatever is that you want to do, and please for the love of god, drop the self pitty.

Went through the union apprenticeship from 2002 - 2007. The program has a very structured continuity from one lesson to the next and if you apply yourself to do the best you can, it's no problem with the math at all. They teach you everything you need to know as far as the math itself is concerned. How it can apply in the field is limitless it seems and the apprenticeship just teaches you basics. Albeit "basics" can get fairly complicated but they build up to get there. I barely passed high School by the skin of my teeth including my math classes and at the end of my apprenticeship, I had the top score for academic performance and on the job training work reports. People tend to excel in the subjects they are interested in even though you may not have thought you are interested in some of this math, seeing how it applies to the electrical trade and if you're interested thoroughly in the electrical trade, the math is easy during the learning process because of it.

I'm an apprentice electrician myself here in the Toronto area after graduating a pre-apprenticeship college program. I had an interview lined up just after school so it was perfect. I was working under a non union company, but unfortunately the people weren't the nicest and I wasn't fast enough for their expectations. Fortunately...I did learn a lot being with the old company and was able to bring my experience into the new. Working under this new company with a boss who's really cool, non union, and it's been nothing but fun for the most part with these guys and they're very understanding. I am happy to have gotten into this trade :)

70 hours of work plus family time is definitely no easy task and we commend you for your dedication. Definitely consider using our service if you ever want hyper focused tutoring which would cut your study time in half. The difficult part of studying is not having any clear road map on what exactly you should be studying in the first place. This causes people to try and study everything which as you may know is not a very efficient strategy. We make sure to guide you effectively on what you personally need to learn and since we provide our tutoring service online it can really fit into anyone's schedule. Can you please clarify a few things: 1) The areas of algebra that should be studied you mentioned were fractions, factors, decimals, etc. on Khan academy every area covers so many other topics. For example: there are lessons for x and + fractions but there’s also ordering and comparing fractions. Should that be part of the “fractions” we study? 2) In your own experience once in the apprenticeship, did you have to travel often and far for job assignments? And how often?

I was in a college electrical engineering program but struggled as I got into the more advanced topics dealing with differential equations and complex multi variable calculus topics. I ended up dropping out as a result of difficulties with my junior year courses on math as well as family related issues trying to deal with my mother's diagnoses with terminal cancer. I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to get back into that career path but don't have the money to afford a college program and felt that enter a trade by doing an apprenticeship would be a much more economical way of achieving my desire to work with electronics. Do the later years of the apprenticeship program touch on similar topics of advanced multi variable calculus and differential equations? If so it would be good to know early so I can try and find the right tutoring and support to help me get through the topics I failed in before. I'm hoping that one day working in this trade could help me finance a return to college in order to complete my degree as an electrical engineer, but who knows,I might enjoy the more hands on trade based work and just make my new goal becoming a master electrician. Would appreciate your input! I take my aptitude test and do my interview in about 3 months and your videos have helped motivate me immensely. Hoping to start getting some on the job experience as a construction wireman while I wait to see if I can get into my local unions program! Your video on whether I need prior experience in construction really helped seal my decision to continue down this path. Thanks so much!

If you are keen on electrical engineering then advanced math you talked about single variable and multi variable calculus will be very important Kjan academy is very good there is a classic book on engineering math that was used in many engineering degrees in the UK was the book by Ken Stroud Engineering Mathematics which take you through all the topics in a fast and simple way it’s more like a workbook giving you basic examples and then questions to solve in my view the fastest way to learn a lot of math quickly. There were two editions of this book a vol 1 and 2 both around a thousand pages but trust me it’s the best book to work from. There was also a more basic foundational book. If you had all 3 books my advice it would take you through your engineering course no problem. Ken past away some years ago and since then dexter booth added to the book. Great textbook my friends who were aeronautical, mechanical and materials scientists used this book as did I an economist.

@@mathman0101 Thanks for the advice. Really appreciate it. I guess my ideal hope would be to spend the time becoming a journeyman and putting a good number of years with the union and use the money I was making to help me go back to school and finish my degree in electrical engineering. I was in the wrong headspace in the past which really handicapped my ability to succeed and I just need to find an economical way to finance school and working a trade while getting my education part time seems like a great choice. My biggest dream would be to get a position working as an electrician in some sort of high tech manufacturing with the intent of transition to a more engineering related role doing things like designing PCB and programming PLC's after getting my degree. Your advice just gives me more confidence that now that I'm in a place to really move forward with my career dreams that I can succeed in those topics I've failed at before. @Mad Electrician all your videos have really helped me navigate and feel well prepared for whatever might come my way in my journey to apprenticeship. I would love to see a video maybe talking about Construction Wireman programs if you know anything about them as it's something I'm hoping to pursue to start getting some experience on actual job sites. My local has a CW program that you can just call in for work opportunities but it's very sparse on what that sort of work would entail compared to what apprentices do so hearing what you might know would be great!

That’s a great question. I felt the same way too when I applied. I had some experience with a few power tools but knew pretty much nothing compared to all of the other apprentices I started out with. I would just say to not be too worried about being embarrassed or not knowing anything. You’ll learn. There is a reason why apprenticeships last 4-5 years. It takes time to but if I can do it then you definitely can too. The nice thing is that when you first start out you’re really not expected to know anything.

Hey Anthony! That’s a great question. I don’t personally know of any that are specifically geared towards the aptitude test, but if you watch my Taking the Aptitude Test video I talk about an app called Khan Academy. In that app there are some specific subjects that you can learn and those are basically the same types of questions that you’ll have in your aptitude test. I know there are practice tests that you can take online. I personally have never taken any so I’m not sure exactly what to recommend for those though.

@MadElectrician
@MadElectrician 3 роки тому
Hey Denver! Like I mentioned in the video, the level of math that you’ll be doing as a first term apprentice is very basic. You’re constantly building off of concepts that you’ve already learned, so it’s just important to make sure that you’re taking time to learn and understand the concepts before moving on. There is a decent amount of math in first term (if it’s the same as it is there as it is here) but it’s not overly difficult.

If it's something you really want to do, go for it! In my apprenticeship class, a retired guy from the Air Force that was 48 when he started back in 2002. He made it through graduation as part of the 13 guys that "topped- out" out of 33 that had started in the first year. Doug ended up taking a maintenance job with a municipality that maintained the light rail system throughout the city that he had help construct when working on it as a contractor out of the local. I wouldn't let that bother you too much but just know that even though they may not ride you like the 18-year-old with a bunch of backbreaking "go for" work, you'll still have to pay your dues as an initiate into the trade and it is a very physically demanding job. If you're good with that I wouldn't worry about the other stuff. Godspeed bro!

IF you whant to sucess in your electrician school, you know to need basic electrician math. IF you whant to develop furter after basic electrician to become engenier, then yes you need more deeper math knowledge. But in real life for an electrician you dont realy need math. You whil never count math om your daily jobb. And today there are apps and programs that calculate all THE thing for you. And when you work you lern thumb rules and standards that Applies to everything you do. So IF you whant to work with comurcial electronics, production with housing and so on you dont realy need math. But you need to know basic stuff and you need to know how your using your equipment like multimeter and so on, and you need to have a srructured mind and high safety awerness.
