The world's first and only adjustable mechanical switches (line from their website). Basically it means if you press down a key, do you want the switch to activate as soon as you press it or when the key hits the bottom?
I put it through some testing, in Quake Live, Quake Champions, CS:GO and League of Legends, then some strafe testing and latency testing.
Here's my SteelSeries affiliate link for the very useful screen omnipoint switch keyboard: steelseries.pbj2.net/c/223206...
Thanks to NVC who showed me the strafe test, you can see his videos here: / justnvc

Just a note... the bump test is using LEFT KEY and RIGHT KEY in its results, but that doesn't mean arrow keys. It's CTRL (left key, omnipoint switch) VS Left Arrow (right key, standard switch). Probably didn't help that I put the arrow key switch on the thumbnail, but I just thought the photo looked cool. I'll take another with CTRL off tomorrow to help avoid further confusion!

Probably the cheap stabiliser on the shift not actuating when you press on one side of it and not centrally so that could be fixed. Also does your control key have a stabiliser? If it does then its not a fair match with left arrow. Thanks for the Vid.

about your test for keys i think a more seeing result might be to bind a key on the keyboard to turn left or right and find the right yawspeed to show it instead of strafing.

Don't get me wrong, but I think the problem with any "gaming" keyboard produced by these companies are made so that they can suit the most amount of e-sports gamers. Personally (though I am a casual gamer, so take this with a pinch of salt), I think that custom keyboards get you the best of both worlds. You can make it low profile, actuate at whatever distance you want (by using different switches, springs etc.) and make it the most comfortable for _you_. This keyboard aims to appeal to the most amount of people, but in doing so, makes it not a great recommendation for people with certain likes and dislikes. I honestly think that it would be pretty much impossible for any company to make a gaming mech keyboard that suits everyone in every way possible: people just have different tastes in switches, appearances, stabilisers, keycaps and that's why I love custom keyboards. You get to make a keyboard that fits your needs _perfectly_.

i agree, this isn't too powerful a function. It seems good if you want something to instantly start or stop as soon as you touch or release a key. Otherwise it seems to be more of a comfort/personalization thing. Maybe tall actuation distance for a light typer, but low for a heavy typer? idk.

It's also very practical for writing not only gaming. I've been saying this for ages but gaming ppl look at me like crazy, and the keyboard community, like I'm a poor retarded or something. 0.8mm or 2mm actuation, is not gonna make any difference, since you can't have speed in your fingers without a lot force. Translated, it means, you will always bottom out. So actuation have little to do with speed, and total switch travel has to do a lot more. Further more a very low actuation distance will make the experience incredibly annoying. Which makes any switch around 2.5-3mm total travel with 1.2-1.7mm actuation the perfect balance (ofc the weight should be higher as you go lower on travel and actuation). You can be both fast and precise. This extends to writing aswell, as among keyboard reviewers you will find the trend that despite them not liking the keyboard, it felt right typing on it. And some of those who tested speed typing they found out to be slightly faster and make less error on a low profile keyboard. (With the exception of flat keycaps keyboards). Kailh blue with 3.0 and 1.5mm is the perfect sweet spot for both. Yes it's clicky and despite the click being much more defined than on click jacket and not sounding like dog shit, it remains annoying. But the practical aspect fof both gaming and writing is there. There's also many other advantages to these type of switches. Most of them don't have that annoying leaf spring since both the case switch and the keyboard case is less voluminous and hollow.

In CSGO setting the actuation point higher up would actually give a pretty decent advantage as the momentum in the game has been stopped by strafing in the opposite direction, commonly referred to as counterstrafing, so yes. For csgo players a higher actuation point is a big deal. Definetly recommend csgo players to use "faster" switches or just lighter switches in general.
@Rosterized
@Rosterized 2 роки тому
I remember my counterstrafes became worse overall in csgo when I tried red switches, I would constantly overshoot the strafes because even tho I had the keyboard for a solid year I never got as good finger feeling to the switches than I do with brown switches. Also atleast back in the day I remember csgo pro players heavily played with mx black switches which are the heaviest to press down. Im thinking in the end keyboards are up to personal preference more than anything

As someone who is not fond of wireless keyboards, one thing I love about Apex series of keyboards is how they handled cable routing. It's awesome and versatile, unlike most others where you are left with this monster dong hydra hanging off the side of your keyboard swallowing your desk. Anyways, I don't think the Pro version with adjustable switches is for me (or the Razor analog version for that matter). I would stick to regular browns or reds, maybe some other interesting switch down the road.

It's a natural logarithm (time against distance traveled), since the acceleration is propotional to distance. I would say choose when the slope is close to 1 to balance out the "accidental actuation" & responsiveness? I have no idea how the different levels of actuation is distributed along the whole distance though (but if its linear, choose something around 6 ...?). Dunno if this makes any sense. Just trust your feeling zy ;)

If you ever get into custom keyboards, you coulld try desoldering one of these kinds off keyswitches to put in heavier springs. Apparently for gaming, if you the tensions are high and you have the heaviest springs in your keyboard, it makes it feel supportive. You won't even have to bottom out anymore. So that could definitely be a cool project down the line. I'd recommend 150g switches before ever going and trying to use springs inside of ballpoint pens though, as it will be extremely heavy and might be a better idea to atleast make a first video with 150g, prior to frankensteining ballpoint pen springs.

this could be a pretty useful functionality. for example when i'm playing a fighting game on linears the high actuation gives me trouble with double key presses too often registering as 1 and then 2 because of the tiniest difference in timing of my two fingers hitting the separate keys
@megapalon
@megapalon 3 роки тому
I used to own a Corsair Rapid Fire Keyboard but had a lot of issues with the spring tension and finger weight. a lot of times my finger (small hand 18cm) were too heavy - pressing the key a tiny bit. That way i moved unintentionally ingame. This happened a lot in CS GO (global elite). Also stopping became more difficult, because releasing the key became the problem. Ingame I moved too far, because short actuation and bottom'ing out keys: resulting in a long way up (time) to release a key. I sold the Rapid fire (Cherry Speed switches) and got a normal mechanical keyboard (Corsair K90, blue) with dampers. Way better experience for my fingers. At least I can rest my fingers on keys now without issues.

i do prefer soft rubber dome keyboards like razer "cynosa", because of the clever bottoming feel and long almost same actuation point as it reaches the bottoming same time. tried blue, red, low mechanical keyboards but none of them worked for me. mechanical keyboards are too sensitive and hard to contro, hard to make precise movements in fps like csgo. no matter how hard i tried to adapt i was always over peeking, misclicking, could not stop the exact moment i wanted. i've been using 2 razer deathadders since 2010. a month keys started to stuck so i bought razer "cynosa pro" which just first basic one. and it works perfect. i just wanna tell people that modern rubber traditional keyboards are so good in terms of performance. so no need to rush into high priced, marketing hyped, fancy mechanical keyboards

there is a tiny bit of advantage to be had with a very small actuation. However it is not plainly inherent to the design, the player has to take advantage of this. Without the proper reflexes the micro amount of time people look to gain is lost in simple human latency. If you had to consciously think about that button press at all even a little, that perceived advantage is lost.

To be honest I think the Apex Pro's only purpose in life is to act as guide. You can test out various actuation levels and find the one you most naturally press and then in future on other better keyboards you can try and find a switch that actuates at that level or which keyboards to stay away from because the switches don't match your style at all. I've been using this keyboard for about a year now, here are my thoughts on it. Hope someone finds this interesting. Coming from Cherry MX Brown switches, I wanted the absolute fastest reaction times. I play For Honor, and I found that dodging with spacebar wasn't quite fast enough. With the Apex Pro, it feels really good to have the dodge come out almost the instant that I press the spacebar. I feel like it improves my timing as well in games like DMC 5. I think I can type faster on it too. It's easy to avoid accidental presses once you're used to it. After a lot of tweaking, here's my current setup. I have double O-rings on the omni-point keys, which greatly reduces travel. When gaming, I use actuation level 1 on my movement keys, shift, ctrl, alt, and space. Otherwise, I use actuation level 2. It's basically a low profile, light, fast actuating, linear, and quiet switch. I personally find this very comfortable and also quite competitive, so I love this setup. You could probably just get a good low profile keyboard for cheaper though, I probably overspent. What am I saying, you should obviously buy this keyboard just for the OLED screen. Worth every penny.

And the wooting can be set in a game like csgo to function like a controller while still able to use the mouse witch does give a competitive advantage and I'm not sure what the steel series has but the wooting can save up to 4 profiles onboard where 1 is a dedicated typing profile and invinite sharable profiles in software

In CS:GO I actually prefer the Huntsman TE that has a 1.0 mm actuation point. It registers really quickly so I can counter-strafe perfectly (Pressing A and then immediately pressing D to stop moving). I actually haven't been able to switch off of it as every other keyboard feels delayed now. In a game like CS:GO or Valorant I think lower actuation points are needed.
@lilbulgarianog3396
@lilbulgarianog3396 2 роки тому
Well the apex pro can go 1.0mm down to 0.4mm so why would you prefer a worse keyboard
@Embeed
@Embeed 2 роки тому
@@lilbulgarianog3396 I actually have the Tournament edition huntsman, Apex pro, and 60% Huntsman. Even if the actuation distance can be worse compared to the Apex Pro, the huntsman still in my opinion feels superior The Huntsman TE is by far the best for CS:GO and Valorant because the 40 grams + the low actuation force + optical switch (~0 ms response time) make it feel so much better than the Apex pro and the Razer 60% model. The 60% model I have is 45 grams and that's the only difference between the 60% and TE. 5 grams is a HUGE difference to me after using the huntsman TE for so long. If you ask anyone that has used the Huntsman for months then you'll understand. The Apex pro has extra 0.7 ms response time on the steelseries site and that also matters too. TLDR it's not just about the actuation distance

I dont want to falsify your test, but i did these tests on my HyprX Alloy Origins Core with HyprX Red switches and got the same results. Sure theres a chance that i have faster fingers so maybe i moved less because of that. If you have both keyboards on hand and compare them to eachother would be a more precise result.

Actually the "fatest" keyboard would be keyboards with Gateron optical yellow switches so a keyboard like GK61 (3.2mm total travel so low profile, 1mm actuation point) and the most important part, only 35G which makes a huge difference in speed as you reach the actuation point/bottom out way faster. It's also optical but to be honest it's no different then mechanical as the speed difference would be something like "hey if I get a shorter usb cable the input latency would be lower!". The most important part would be the actuation force for sure.

More like trying their best to emulate sticks strafing; sadly i can't see this taking off. We need PC devs to support 360° precise movements and sticks (quick and precise, fast and loose, smooth, etc) the same way fortnite did.

In my opinion, the variability of the actuation point is not why this keyboard is so good - it’s that the onnipoint switches are 5x faster than mechanical switches. Non contact switches > mechanical switches.

Your mistake is believing that it's true. Steelseries likes to spout bullshit. I have Rival 300, and it's a garbage mouse. They also did this bullshit about Rival 3 Wireless' battery life, and who knows, they might actually be bullshitting about everything else about the mouse, like rated clicks, to attempt to compete with G305. EDIT: I mean, this is the same company who sponsored the scam known as Bully Hunters so that they could sell some headsets.

tbh, oled screen probably drove up the keyboard $50, when they really could have had a really good competitor for the price
@bluein_
@bluein_ 2 роки тому
oled screens of that size are usually 3-5$ a pop (at the highest quality) for major manufacturers, so it's probably added as more of a convenience since the computing power in most of these peripherals usually go to waste nowadays, they'd save a whole lot more just having more simplified PCBs for the guts, but i see why they don't really care when folks buy it anyway.

Like there is some games (osu mania, quaver, and fnf) where arrow keys are an option of main input. I would more like it if they had the omnipoint switches on them or at least put more customization on the keyboards (taking out the switches and replacing them for omnipoint)
