To everyone wondering why it's better to back up the stock settings from the factory is because all drivers that were installed when you bought it are optimal for the laptop. If you fresh install windows we have to download the drivers which is newer than the stock ones which may or may not mess up the current state of the system. Not to mention windows updates are known to cause issues so yeah. Its up to you really whichever you prefer.

I did this a week ago to my 9 year old laptop. It was always blowing the fan really loud for no reason lately. Reverted it back to 2014 and after a day of catching up to 9 years of updates, now it's nice and quiet again. Was gonna buy a new laptop this year if this didn't help, luckily it did. Really recommend this. Also don't bother waiting to create the image until after you've customized it with all the programs that you like to use because they're going to be so out of date they won't even update anymore so you'd have to uninstall them anyway and it just makes the image bigger than it has to be.

@@BracerJack just wanted to update. The fan noise came back not very long after. Seems my hardware isn't compatible with the codecs youtube uses, simply too old, and thus they put a large strain on the CPU, so unfortunately reverting to old image doesn't always fix it.

@@monojeons It you are talking about the built in windows restart, then it will ONLY restore to your most recent windows 10 update, not to the original pristine condition when you just got your laptop, that is why knowing this video is so useful, you will forever have the actual clone with you.

For those complaining about the OOB snapshot being out of date, you can use Macrium Reflect at ANY time to back up your machine this way, so you'll always have a current system image to return to. Of course, this would require a larger backup disk (usb, external drive, etc). Once backed up, you can even remove the OEM restore image if allowed, knowing you have a better version of the system image available.

@@kylecurry1410 for a drive dedicated to these types of backups, I would ensure it is at least double the size of the hard drive you wish to back up. If larger, it affords you the option of keeping multiple point in time backups to return to at any time.

Fortunately for me, I’ve followed your technique on every windows computer I’ve ever owned. It worked to the T and my problem was solved! SO MANY THANKS. Very good advice !!! I am learning people to do this from 2004 :) My first software was Ghost 3.1 (The first versions of Ghost supported only the cloning of entire disks. However, version 3.1, released in 1997 supports cloning individual partitions. Ghost could clone a disk or partition to another disk or partition or to an image file. Ghost allows for writing a clone or image to a second disk in the same machine, another machine linked by a parallel or network cable, a network drive, or to a tape drive.)

This will depend heavily upon the laptop you buy. I bought a new gaming laptop that was basically broken at the driver level when I bought it, and it didn't start working properly until I had updated everything I could. Not all manufacturers will make sure that their firmware is in order right out of the box, so keep that in mind before backing up your system image.

@@BracerJack It actually helps me throughout my college. I installed many softwares on my laptop and many saved files. Much faster than installing a new windows 11. I gave my L340 laptop to my father and transfer to M2 Macbook air because of the fanless design.

Nice to know someone else does that, too! I started doing a "pre-first-boot backup" so that I never even get to the initial setup boot before my first backup is done. Exact same process, only my first boot is from the USB stick. The reason I started doing that is because if I ever sell the laptop, I can either give it a "new out of the box experience" for whoever buys it, or I can pull the HD/SSD, replace it with a new one, and restore the original PRE-1st-Boot system image, while not wasting time worrying about lost files, as I keep the original drives with me. It works out to the same as having OEM reinstall disks...which NOBODY includes in the box any more, and most wont' even sell them to you, even if you're willing to pay extra for them!

YES This this this ! I also made a clone right after purchase for this very reason, if you ever decide to sell it, you reclone it back to the original "just purchased" state so that the next user will also have the exact "just purchased" state of the laptop. I miss those oem disks...

Hello Sebastian, if your PC is still working well, don't worry too much about the fact that you have connected to the internet, you may proceed to do the clone now. Try not to delay any longer, the longer you delay, the more junk accumulates in your system. Hope that helps Sebastian Rocks.

To prevent the idea that your computer is slowing down, check your power options and turn off the "Turn on fast start up" option. This option does not allow your computer to fully cycle through a starting process. It bypasses small updates and special driver refreshes that are needed. Also, The Sleep option is worse for your battery than Hibernate. So be conscious of your power options and you will have a better time.

I usually do a clean install whenever I buy a new laptop. I look at the system, I make a note of what the company's update assistant or support assistant is, and then I do a clean install of Windows. Then I installed the update assistant or support assistant app, and I start setting it up exactly how I want. Then I back up the image. For a lot of users, this wouldn't be ideal, but I typically do clean installs at least every year on all of my devices. It's just how I roll.

You are correct to say that for a lot of users, this wouldn't be ideal because they might un-install important stuff, but the cool thing about the cloning technique is once the clone is made, they can try to un-install what they know are bloats, and if they accidentally removed the wrong stuff, no big deal, they already have a clone of what was, no damage is done :D But your advise is sound for experts, remove the bloat and then make a clone.

Thank you. One very, very, important thing I did that saved my rear many times was to make a copy of the original Nvidia/Video card driver and place it in somewhere safe. For some reason, that version of driver is the only one that my laptop runs without problems!

Thanks for that. We think alike. Before I bought this machine I had already made a bootable disc imaging drive. Thus I imaged my system so that I can restore it to the state it was in before I bought it, and I have kept the image on a NAS, USB drive and on one of my onboard drives. Perfectionism does not hurt in IT.

I always do exactly what you've described here, with one change. Every time I buy a new computer the hard drive is always configured as one partition, no matter how big the drive is. So I always shrink the partition, and then create a 2nd partition in the free space. I can then store all my data on the 2nd partition, including disk images of my OS on 1st partition, and can backup/restore the 1st partition at any time without losing my data.

I tried to update my drivers, but accidentally installed the wrong drivers. Radeon wouldn't work and my laptop wouldnt detect the GPU. I couldnt find a way to restore the old drivers. Good thing i found your video before I bought my laptop. Did a reset to a previous image before I updated the drivers, now everything is working great. Thank you bro!

Yes, please do this FIRST before anything. After you have made the clone you can un-install the program, you wouldn't need it anymore since the clone is done.

Do NOT forget about some physical processes happening in your laptop/pc that DO indeed slow down your system over time no matter the software it's running, for example: dust in cooling system/fans, thermal paste getting worse thermal conductive and so on. Software rollback won't solve any of this

The idea itself isn't bad, but most of the laptops slows down because dust accumulates among the components, so, for a fully *recovery* before reverting your OS make sure that your laptop is clean inside as well

@@someoneyouneverknow7529 dust in itself is weird. It always accumulates itself especially on places which don't experience much activity. Not using laptop for a month could lead to dust build up inside it, but it's very unlikely that it would reach to the point where performance would be affected. It'd takes years of not using a laptop for that to happen.

I think my desktop computer is probably an exception to this, since it is a custom built computer (essentially assembled from various off the shelf parts) And so i would be reliant on windows finding the correct drivers (with the exception of the graphics card, as i can download the driver for that)

Once everything is installed and the drivers are working, before you install any bloat/software/experiments, see if you could make the clone, this is so that if anything in the future happen, you don't ever have to go through all that setting up drama again :D

Because my old laptop was 15.4inch 120hz Razer Blade and I wanted to have a little bit bigger screen and a little bit faster refresh rate. And yea, I know I should get a PC instead of laptop mainly because of the bigger monitor but right now I don’t have enough space in home to put a desk, PC, etc.. because I don’t live alone. @@BracerJack The thing is, though, I cannot emphasize how much I am grateful for this video. Being able to restore to stock settings that came with the laptop is super valuable. I’m really glad I saw this video when I did. System Restore isn’t super reliable to remove viruses. Factory Reset can be troublesome for drivers and stuff, and it also doesn’t guarantee a full wipe of malicious code. To think I used to underestimate the value of a system snapshot, and a stock one at that.

@@pressfinchat Only those who have been through a situation where this is needed knows how important this is, while some just looked at this video and go "meh, I will do it....later...", there is no "later" bro, you do it NOW. You are going to be a hero to your friends now, because you will be telling them how important this is. And you are right about the built in system reset/restore/whatever, for when their computer is infected by a virus, do they just magically believe the virus leniently through acts of compassion decided not to infected those specific files ? That is just crazy thinking 😬

@@BracerJack Trial one - oh no 47 GB!!! Okay, 16 GB USB did not work. Fortunately I had one with 128 GB with me. Trial number 2 - Success!!! Mother did not like the idea of using Libreoffice instead so I think she willl buy the Office home 2021. Thank you for an excellent video!!! Have the best life! Yes this works for Desktop PC as well. I am happy for you that you have done this for your new laptop, now it will be new for a long LOOOONG time thanks to what you have done. You can now un-install macrium, you already have the clone done, you don't need this software anymore :D

I started mine for the first time and connected to the internet today and spent hours having to update and restart over and over again. Wish I had watched this before! Lol

Well, now that all the unexpected crazy updates are done, if your computer is still working well, I HIGHLY SUGGEST you do a clone of it using this video's technique now and you will forever feel safe from now on knowing no matter what happens, you can always revert your system back to a functional state again in less than 5 minutes. :-D Thank you for your comment 😊

@@mrinalp Well, if everything is still functioning properly, now is the best time to quickly do the clone ! Then you will feel safe knowing regardless of what happen, you can always restore your computer back to your current state again. Don't do anything more, get that clone done first ;-p Your future self having computer issues will thank you !
