They may be different “levels” of college football, but that doesn’t mean that a Group of 5 team like Cincinnati can’t win against the elite. It’s shouldn’t be about “who’s on your schedule”, it should be about giving teams like UCF and Cincinnati an opportunity to compete against the top programs. The group of 5 conferences should partner up with the power 5 conferences. For example, the SEC can partner with the Sun Belt. From there, each team should have one cross conference game per year. Let them rotate opponents each year. That way we can have a baseline on how good these group of 5 teams are and they have a legit path to the playoffs

Idea for an 8 Team Playoff: Each Power 5 conference would each get a team, a Group of 5 team is in, and two more to the preference of the committee. Seeding is up to the committee but they must fill requirements.

Cincinnati had no chance. Even if Clemson had beaten Notre Dame twice (which they should have) they would have put in Texas A&M.

If it changes..needs to be power 5 conference champions, 2 highest ranked group of 5, and 1 at a large/ND or independent school ranked high enough. That last part with ND or independent/at large is the hard part to get ironed out

Based on what they’re saying, it sounds like the G5 would have leverage in an antitrust case.

It’s not even about the group of 5 teams. What about Texas A&M? What about Oklahoma? What about a 2 loss Georgia or a 1 loss Indiana? The 4-team playoffs are killing the recruiting of these good power 5 teams, and it will do that into eternity unless the playoffs are expanded.

Just expand it to 8 teams with the current ranking system and leave it at that. The quarter finals will be home games for seeds 1-4 against the visitors 5-8. The winners go to the semifinals which is the current bowl game system

So is this the argument for/against a final 64? Its worked incredibly well in basketball and it could give the little guy a chance of beating the big guy (statistically though, they would probably lose, but its still a chance).

Give me back the good ole days when you had UPI and AP polls. Lotta times the rankings at the top were a little different. The 4 big New Year’s Day bowl games usually decided the national champs. If you weren’t # 1 goin in you had to win big and hope # 1 lost. Then let the debates and disagreements start till next season

The disparity between the FCS and BCS has shrunk massively and by that measurement G5 and P5 disparity has shrunk even more. The difference is coaching and the P5 is always getting their young talent scalped. There are insane athletes all over the field at the G5 "level" will they get blown out occasionally yea. But so does a lot of P5 schools

I wouldnt say 8 teams, cuz we would have some lopsided stuff like Cincinnati vs alabama, like dude Alabama would win by like 70, but I think 6 teams would be perfect. The top 2 teams would have a bye, and #3 plays #6, and #4 plays #5. Then the winner of #4 & #5 plays #1, then the winner of #3 & #6 plays 2. It would make games as lopsided as a 8 team playoff, and teams with great performances can get what they deserve, with 2 more spots. But this is just me, I'm probably crazy

The assumption that a lot of teams would be undefeated if they played Cinys schedule is a faulty one without evidence and actually is disproven nearly every single year when P5s lose to G5s (a great example, top ranked ISU losing to Louisiana). Would there be more undefeated teams? Sure that's likely, but there would probably not be more than a couple.

The reason that the power 5 schools are better than the group of 5 schools is simply because before social media became a thing those were the teams that got the most television exposure which eventually led to kids who wanted to play in the NFL going to these schools because of the television exposure that they received. Sometimes a lot of those G5 teams are very good. Good enough to beat a team like Alabama? Idk maybe, maybe not 🤷🏿‍♂️ but you can’t deny that In 2020 the sun belt conference was playing some good football. U have the American conference that honestly is starting to become like a 6th power 5 conference. I would have at least liked to see a teams like Cincinnati, Louisiana, coastal Carolina, BYU, or Liberty at least get a chance because of how hard they worked to get the records that they got. The current format that they have basically tells ppl that hard work doesn’t pay off. I know some of u may say well they could get into a NY6 but none of those kids want to play in those games I promise u if u go to any of these other schools and ask them if they would want to either play in a NY6 game or an 16 team playoff format they would all take the playoff. These kids are competitors. We may look at them and say they have no chance but a true competitor always believes that if they put in the effort they can win. Honestly the ppl in charge need to come to the realization that 1. We live in a point in time now to where if u wanted to you could literally watch any game that you want even for the group of 5 teams. 2. People would much rather watch a playoff game between teams that played their way in by either Winning their conference or playing a very tough schedule or both than watch a 6-6 western Michigan play a 5-7 western Kentucky in the hot Cheetos bowl. I don’t understand why they’re so reluctant to change with the times. Things are changing and they needed to change if they want more ppl to watch College football. They don’t want to give the group of 5 teams a chance to win a national championship. Think about it...the ppl in charge didn’t start seriously thinking about a playoff format until teams like Boise St started to become really close to making it in the BCS national championship. People would be more willing to pay more for a playoff game than a bowl game. If they expanded to 16 teams yes there would still be those teams while are just good and always manage to make it in but I promise you it won’t be the same 16 teams every year. Expanding would also give television exposure to smaller schools. Kids would eventually start saying I don’t have to move from north Cali to Tuscaloosa to have a shot to win a natty and receive television exposure like players such as Najee Harris did or Any of most of the 5⭐️ or 4⭐️ recruits did since the playoff began. Expanding could lead to a more balanced recruitment process for everyone. It would eventually become more competitive. Which is better for everyone.

I can solve this problem. Have just 8 conferences and the 8 conf champs play a tourney/playoffs. Problem solved. You should have to win your conf to play for the national champ. And this lets every conf have a team in the playoffs. Therefore every team has an equal chance. Why is this so hard?

The 4 team playoff is not the problem its the confrences. The american confrence needs to kickout all the team that will never be good. Tulane, Ecu, south florida, and navy. Then they will be able play more non con games

It doesn’t matter how big you expand the playoff. The CFP committee will always rank the G5 team just far enough away so they can’t make it.

Cincy had Nebraska on the schedule but the Big10 bitched out. AND for the record, Ohio State never wants to play Cincy. In 2003 (when OSU won Nat Title) UC dropped multiple winning TD passes in the final seconds of the game. Had they won, no OSU championship, hence why they disappeared for over a decade.

They should make it a16 team playoff because it’s more fair and they would make more money, and they should give g5 schools tougher schedules, and they should abolish the committee

I like what Fickle did at Cincy. I dont think they beat Indiana. The only argument you have is Texas A&M and OSU. As a OSU fan they probably should not have been ranked without playing while everybody else was playing. Big Ten has themselves to blame for canceling the season so soon.

Rules should be more objective. Football is not gymnastics. Right now the playoff teams are those the committee deems the best AT THE VERY END of the season. This introduces various biases such as recency bias and conference bias. 5 champions + unbeaten teams + remaining best teams. The 5 champions can even change over time based on non-conference, bowl, and playoff games. Suppose big12 loses most of its games against other conference teams, its champion may lose automatic entry into the playoff.

Hear me out for why we shouldn’t expand it: the difference between CFB and nfl is how exclusive the postseason is. Some teams are gonna be left out. The job of the committee isn’t to make everyone happy, it’s to put who they think the 4 best teams are. Granted I don’t think OSU shoulda made it this year, but a season like this won’t ever happen again (hopefully) and everyone will play same number of games. Lemme throw an analogy I heard abt this argument. Let’s say their are 5 kids in a class and 4 of the kids study hard and get a god grade on the test and 1 kid Bs’s it and gets a C. The teacher isn’t gonna make the next test easier for him just because. The teachers job is to make the kids earn the grade not give them an undeserving A. Plus if it got expanded to 6 or 8 teams then some teams have the possibility of playing 16 games which IMO is a lot for college teams. Reply for a civilized argument

The committee has lucked out a lot. Expand the playoff. Let the top team crush the 8 seed just like they crush the 4 seed.

The whole bowl season needs to be fixed these conference ties are stupid that's the reason why a 2-8 South Carolina team can make it to a bowl but not a 9-2 Army.

Depends on who you play during the year. Give the G5 their own championship. How many games would Cincy lose playing Bama's schedule. Would Cincy beat UF, Uga, ATm and Bama if they were in the SEC? Not even close. How many SEC teams go undefeated playing an AAC schedule? Multiple.

The committee should have the option of a 2 or 4 team playoff. No team saying they were 4th best should get any sympathy for not making it. If you can’t argue you are #1 you don’t deserve a National Title

The Format was SUPPOSE to be a 4 Team Playoff SELECTED & RANKED by The COMPUTER System. The Committee selects which (Comp.)Teams plays in which Bowls. The Committee MANIPULATED US & The Computer SYSTEM so THEY will have TOTAL CONTROL of the ENTIRE process. We're BACK to square one BEFORE there WAS a Computer System(except The POs). THAT'S how TCU got SNUBBED in the very 1st. Playoffs & They blamed it on The BIG-12 not having a 12 Team Conference Championship, but The Computer System CHOSE TCU( Ranked#3 )to play. The Committee chose TCU #6. How TCU went from #3 to #6 without POLITICAL MISDEALINGS by The Committee? How do you go from SELECTION Committee to CFP Committee? There's NO Sense of FAIR play.
