Dog has to learn not to go into the field and harrass and bite the cows... and get trampled and killed by said cows. That's not irresponsible, that's training. It'll take that dog about once, maaaaybe twice... and it'll never approach within 10-20 feet of that fence. The cows won't be stressed and the dog won't get trampled to death. It's not fun to have to train animals like that, but its necessary sometimes. :-/ Some dogs just DO NOT take the hint from other methods of training. Sometimes a little bite on the nose is all they'll listen to. Yes, most dogs are smart. Some dogs though... are either dumb as a sack of hammers or headstrong and refuse to listen, even to string commands and punishment. Some dogs are too headstrong for their own good, and end up dead because they do a stupid, and get squished to death by frightened livestock. Again, it isn't fun to have to train that way... but sometimes, for some dogs, it's the only option the little knucklehead will listen to and heed. Besides, yeah it hurts, but it's not damaging, or cruel, and it only hurts about as bad as getting smacked in the backside really hard. Once. Yes, I've touched the fence. I had to put one up in my yard to keep my dogs from ripping my fence to shreds (after they did over $2000 worth of damage to it and the back of the house) and tonkeep them from constantly escaping. I didn't want to, but they left me no other options. I had tried sprays, discipline training, harsh commands, spanking, spraying water at them when they tried, smelly stuff, bitter stuff, I even peed on the fence myself to try and show them it was my territory, and even tried a really gross trick where you pee into a closeable container and save it (out in the shed) and let it dehydrate and concentrate and then pour that all over the fence... nothing worked for more than a couple weeks. NOTHING. I didn't want dog catchers taking them, some kid getting bit because they played too rough, or worse getting run over by a car. I've lost dogs to cars, and it was devastating. I've got a pretty decent sized back yard, and they have plenty of toys... but for whatever reason they wanted to rip holes in the fence and dig under it and break out. One time one of them ripped a hole in her skin a full 2 inches long all the way to the bone trying to get out of the fence. $789 vet bill to get her stitched up and healing. She had to live in her kennel crate in the bedroom for nearly 2 months, it was awful on both her and us. It was either spend $7,000 - $10,000 on a new fence (money I DO NOT have) that was built out of concrete and physically impossible for them to break or dig out under... or... electric fence. 3 days and $343 later... and no dog has EVER SINCE broken out of or tried to even APPROACH thinking of breaking out of our fence since. And it has been tested by over 15 different dogs. All of them take 1-2 lessons sniffing it... and they never muck with it a again. Ever. Yes it is painful. I have put my unshod foot against it and the ground, and felt it jolt all the way to my shoulder. I even got the least powerful one I could buy just so it wasn't too powerful. I trained as an electrician when I was younger too. I have been shocked by FAR worse. I have been zapped by an old Army Vehicle Starter Generator (world war 1 hand cranked vehicle starter tranformer) once too, because some friends were playing around with it in electrician's class... zapped me right in the neck with the leads... knocked me slap out for about a good 15 minutes. Electricity hurts. But the animal zapper fence controllers, are SPECIFICALLY designed to be humane and are NOT dangerous or cruel. Remember... animals learn the hard way. We try to teach them like we train human children, and then wonder why they act like spoiled brats... they... are not... humans. They learn EVERYTHING the hard way. This video is not cruel. It's training.

How else is the dog going to know to stay away? The dog is fine and he learned an important lesson.
