Apprentice electricians and experienced electrical workers times are changing
It's an exciting time to be in the electrical industry. With the electrification of heating, transport and growing demand for green energy. This paradigm shift is going to drive the demand for skilled electricians. Rising to the challenge of COP26 and the green agenda the way we train electricians needs to change to match the new technology and the demand from employers.
Some exciting news from Luke Osborne of the ECA.

Does this mean that the people who do the domestic electrician qualification are going to be seen as less qualified? Would someone who only works on commercial sites be able to just go and get the domestic gold card without any trouble or would they have to do a bridging course as well. Would the commercial electrician be considered a fully qualified electrician and the domestic spark like an upgraded improver?

And what of those who have only done Level 3 2365 at college without an employer?
@stuartrhoades4306

I can sort of see the point, if it's essentially creating 2 specialist qualifications. A domestic electrician and a commercial electrician as some companies only work in one field or the other. But don't think it should be aimed to be a lesser qualification. An apprentice after 4 years doing commercial work , would not be prepared to be let loose as a domestic electrician, any more than an apprentice that has spent 4 years doing domestic work, would be equipped with the knowledge to be a commercial electrician. Only the lucky apprentices get to sample all aspects of electrical work during their apprenticeship.

@@electricalstuff259 you are bang on electricity is electricity but someone who's only ever wired up lights and sockets etc in a house would struggle if they suddenly had to wire up a 3 phase contactor and dol starter with remote on off switches for a machine in heavy industry. I get the seperate disciplines need to be treated as seperate but my concern is that one discipline would be considered higher grade than the other as opposed to an actual seperate discipline
@electricalstuff259
@electricalstuff259 2 роки тому
@@joefrayling9263 I don't see why they have to be treated separately - an electrician is an electrician. A couple of weeks shadowing someone else is all that's needed to get used to commercial/industrial. 3 phase is hardly that different to single phase. It's all just electricity into breakers into contactors into equipment at the end of the day.

I think there's a real lack in courses for larger scale renewables. You can do a 5 day course on domestic solar and small commercial, but I can't find anything aimed at large systems. Designing a domestic solar installation with battery storage is completely different to designing one in the scale of hundreds of kilowatts or more. If nothing else you're unlikely to have 1000V rated strings on a house but loads of the designs we do are up there.
@montystelevision3238
@montystelevision3238 2 роки тому
So this course probably leads to the ability to sign off notifiable domestic work. This currently amounts to a new circuit, change of CU or work in a special location. So 3 years to sign those things off, leaving the local handyman, to do extra sockets, new lights, replacement accessories, rewiring existing in situ circuits.

So finally your starting to group the electrician to their ability 👍 I was lucky to have an apprenticeship with a large company where we did the full range of industrial/comercial/ domestic over 5 years before being let out on my first job which was a school complete rewire.Get rid of the 21 day become a sparkly course, I have seen work in Comercial installations by a ( short course electrician ) shocking stuff.THE MARKET now has so many sides to it specialise once you get the domestic ticket and we then have quality people in the industry as not everyone gets the chance to have the variety as I did back in the day.GREAT IDEA 👍

Just some thoughts... I start a domestic apprenticeship and in the second year I move placements to a commercial firm, can I then transfer to a 4 year apprenticeship? Same question but this time my firm has secured some industrial jobs in my third year, can I transfer courses. PV and EV courses are a week each to teach you the basics, there is already an environmental module in the 4 year course. I'm assuming the syllabus will be more in depth but are you then sacrificing the core knowledge of being a all round electrician, possibly 3 phase and containment. An employer has two options: Take on a domestic electrician that can fit PV and EV that are pretty much plug and play. Or Take on a all round electrician who can pick up the EV and PV in a fortnight. It sounds like they are shaving a year of an apprenticeship, giving them the basics and off you go into house bashing for the rest of your career, the money is in commercial and industrial, what will the apprentices want I wonder.

@@efixx I agree so wouldn't it be best for a government backed course bringing the industry up to speed and not drip feeding new electricians into an ever changing field. Interesting video, It’s perfect for a person who only wants to work in the domestic sector. I’m sure that if they want to move to other sectors of the industry I’m sure training will be available and an employer would probably rather employ them and up skill them, win win👍
@montystelevision3238

Does it really take three years to learn how to install and maintain a single phase domestic installation comprising a few rings and radials? I understand you can do solar and vehicle courses which take simply a week. It’s hardly difficult installing an EV charger. This sounds like another NVQ (Not Very Qualified) and another thing to subscribe to. The ECS. More overheads to pass on to a domestic client. The sort that want to pay less and less. This will lead to more and more DIY. There’s only a sprinkling things that are notifiable now unless that is reversed and even so that won’t stop the DIYer. It never did before. The “ideas” groups can contrive as many courses and coloured cards they want, no one works on my installation apart from me and I’m sure as hell no doing a three year apprenticeship to change my CU when I can notify the local council or choose not to bother and swallow the risk. How many part P DIY prosecutions have there been in the last five years across the UK involving the DIY householder?

This is similar to what I said a while ago about different levels of electricians. None of these kids want to know about the principles and they rarely get to do any design or testing (although they should). I don't think this domestic thing is going to work though, it'll just make things more complicated for the grandads. We need to stop multiple choice testing, use separately invigilated exams where the teacher is not involved and have a qualification for sparks who just work on tools. The only thing I see here is another money maker.

Heat pumps are not the answer. If you have house properly insulated with heat recovery system, what is the point of forking 14k(heat pump) instead of 2k(combi boiler)? It may change with massive gas prices rise but at the moment electricity and gas rise simultaneously.
