As a HD employee specifically in lumber and building materials I will say this is a great video. I wish most people after watching a wood working video or starting a project would watch this video, instead of being dissapointed by me telling them we don't have cabinet grade mahogany 4x8s. Lol or black walnut veneer, HD carries basic construction supplies and trims not specialty products.

I worked at HD in Lumber/Building Material/Millwork while in college. The amount of moronic people I would get in there was astonishing. One guy and his kid called me a "cheap f*cker" because HD didn't offer a discount on bulk Quikcrete bags. Then they told me they wanted to pour an entire driveway with Quikcrete bags, so I told them to call the local ready mix supplier, and they promptly called me an idiot and to just tell them how many bags it would take. After some quick and easy math that they weren't capable of doing, I told them it was more bags than an entire semi flatbed could hold. They asked for a manager to complain about me. LOL

I sctuslly build quite nice cabinets mostly from Lowes materials. HD also generally has halfway decent basic stuff, but you have to be choosy. I did have to go to a proper mill for the solid maple stock for the shelving.

Hearing about a local Amish run lumberyard an hour away was a HUGE game changer for me. I built my wife a giant beautiful 13' crafting table out of purple poplar for 1/5 of the price of a big box store. And today I'm planing $500 of walnut I bought from them to make a custom countertop that was going to cost $6000 if we had a big box store order it. That first trip to the lumberyard was intimidating, but the quality and price is outstanding!

I started working with wood a little over 2 years ago, when I moved into a new house. Our garage had no storage, and I wanted to have a workbench, along with cabinets for tool storage. After looking into pricing for the cabinets, I decided they were far too expensive for me, so I decided to build my own workbench and shelving that were customized to fit my tool chests in. All I used was construction grade lumber from the store you mentioned here, but after it was all complete, I fell in love with the fact that I made it from wood. I have made several other projects I got the plans for from UKposts, but they never would say where they got their wood from, so I always ended up with sh8tty wood from the H D Pot. This video has just blown my mind, and I really appreciate it. I just hope there is a good hardwood store near me. Consider me another subscriber, brother!

Great video. The big boxes have their place, mostly because they're close by. It's fine to by a board or two at them. With respect to good lumber, I'd advise finding local sources (e.g. not places like Woodcraft). Where I go, they mill boards for you at no extra charge, they help paw through huge stacks of huge boards to find the right pieces. It's a wonderful place to shop. Poplar gets short shrift in this video. I really like it. It has subtle streaks of green in it, it is strong, and with some thorough sanding it can be slick as silk. I made some floating shelves out of poplar and finished them with three coats of tung oil. They came out beautifully.

the best thing to do is go to a hardwood store and go thru their inventory to get familiar with the look and feel of the wood, grain and the names of them. Then go to their "scrap bin" which is a bin full of offcuts for pens and knifes and such, if you are lucky they have each individual piece labeled with the type and price so you can use them as flash cards of sorts.

One thing I've learned the hard way is make sure you buy enough extra wood so you can make some test pieces and practice joinery with the actual stock. it feels wasteful but in the end it's not because it helps mitigate major screw ups and the project looks better. also recently I've been getting veneered plywood over MDF core from the hardwood / sheet goods supplier. I was slightly skeptical but it's easy to work with, no voids and incredibly stable.

I find your videos very enjoyable. My grandfather was a master carpenter. Did beautiful work. He didn’t have far to go to get wood since his father owned the local lumber mill. So he could get anything he wanted. My father dabbled in carpentry and I have some of his tools. I remember going to hardware stores with him to purchased hardwood when I was a child. Sadly they are all closed now ( I’m 70). I too dabble but only have the basic tools, Tablesaw, Circular saw, jigsaw, miter saw but more importantly no space! So I end up using the lighter weight tools the most. I keep my project s simple.

Rockler and Woodcraft have pretty significant price mark ups on hardwoods over a local hardwood supply store (usually a barn or warehouse). Rockler and Woodcraft both are primarily into supplying woodworking equipment, with low volumes of s4s hardwood in small sizes on the side...and you pay for them. While they're great in a pinch, finding a local supplier is much better. If you can't find anyone close, look for people who advertise chainsaw milling, or tree milling. Reach out and find out if they supply hardwood slabs, or who they sell their slabs to.

I watched this video because I'm about to (finally!) buy the boards for the first section of what will eventually be a full-room, wrap-around bookcase installation in my so-called library. I used to help my father build his bookcases as a kid (the biggest was an 8x11 w/10" shelves which covered almost an entire wall), and when I was a bit older I built a couple of small ones (I think 5x3 & 6x4, both with 10" shelves) myself. At one point I had the ones I built, a tiny one my younger brother made in wood shop at school, and three nice oak 8x4s w/12" shelves I had bought from a retiring attorney. I lost all those bookcases I just mentioned, as well as several other odds & ends of furniture, to a cop slumlord & his thieving boyfriend in early 2001. Since that time I've just had a bunch of little particle-board cheapos from like, K-mart or whatever, which fact will explain my increasingly desperate need for some decent bookcases... So, all the bookcases I've built or helped to build were made from normal soft pine boards like the ones in Home Depot, Lowe's, or any local lumber yard. Although you don't want to buy badly warped, knotted or cracked boards, and will need to sand (and, occasionally, plane) them as necessary, they have always seemed to work fine (obviously, it helps to be reasonably competent at designing & fabricating simple constructions like bookcases, but that is not very difficult). My question is this- is there some reason why you would not recommend using this sort of lumber for that purpose? Or am I missing the point completely, and you are actually talking to people who build (or aspire to build) "real furniture"?
@shorthopedc
@shorthopedc Рік тому
"Real" has nothing to do with it, or shouldn't. Hardwood doesn't ding as easily as pine, and looks good with finish as opposed to paint. Pine can look pretty terrible with finish or stain, and if you knock into it with something, it's probably going to make a visible nick. That's pretty much it. If you don't mind a nick or two from wear and tear, and plan to paint, pine is great. I have painted pine bookcases all over this place, and they are just as real as anything else, and were built carefully and look good. I also have several sideboards and tables that were made with hardwood and finished with hardwax oil, and they look great too. But use a coaster, wouldya? Anyone who tells you that your bookcase isn't "real furniture" because you made it out of pine is no one to be taken seriously. Build, enjoy and be free.

@@shorthopedc Thank you for the supportive comment; that sort of kindness & decency is somewhat uncommon on UKposts, and I appreciate it very much! As you probably noticed, I was being more than slightly sarcastic toward the end there- I was just a little bit annoyed that I had wasted my time watching this video, and even more annoyed with myself for having been so gullible that I actually expected to learn something useful from it. You are absolutely right, and I agree completely with what you said above. I would only add that the issues with the appearance of stained pine can be mitigated to some extent by carefully choosing the boards (and the stain) that you use. Which is not to say, of course, that there's anything wrong with paint- it is simply a matter of taste and/or what is called for with any particular project. I suppose the bottom line is really what your reasons are for building a bookcase in the first place; i.e. whether it is meant to be primarily functional or primarily decorative. The same would be true, albeit to greater or lesser extent, for most other types of furniture. In my case, even if I had the necessary skills, tools, time & money to build something more decorative, I probably would not bother. The task at hand is to build some solid, functional bookcases, sufficiently well-finished that they are unobtrusive, so that I can finally get the majority of my books out of the boxes in which they have been for the last 9 to 23 years (depending on the box). This first section (also the largest) will be 7'4" x 6'2", and should take care of several hundred books by itself- I can hardly wait!

I enjoyed watching this video! UKposts suggested this video and I'm glad the algorithm did so. I understand about the moisture content in KD wood, but I had to replace a retaining wall with pressure treated 8x8 landscape logs. I bought them in January, sighted each one for perfect straightness, placed the (6) 8-foot long pieces atop 2 full size wood pallets, x 4 sets, left under a covered carport in the shade until a couple weeks ago when I went to install them. Much to my dismay, many of the boards twisted, bowed, and cupped while drying. Such a shame wood can't cooperate and dry in the shape it was cut. It made my project way harder than it needed to be. I ended up having to cut the 8-footers into much smaller sections (so the defects would be somewhat more manageable) and used an electric planer to plane down the high sides. Also had to use many more 12-inch landscape timber screws near the now more numerous ends to ensure any further drying won't ruin my project. Do you have any tips to prevent this from happening when I have to buy pressure treated wood in the future? I even had PT fence posts that curled on me after they dried and after they were installed, forcing me to now redo those posts. S**t like this makes working with wood less fun...

Love your videos and so do my grandkids...especially the LEGO Man one! We usually watch woodworking videos while having breakfast together. At 5 & 9 years old they have their own tools and we work side by side in the shop and folks like you keep them interested and they learn life skills. TY I Have been a woodworker longer than you have been alive (I’m old) and I remember when soft woods were 6 cents a board foot and hardwoods 12 cents. When the big box store opened I too not a fan then and could not find enough boards to build a small shed and they didn’t sell the flashing for T-111 ply because consumers didn’t know enough to buy. I just called a lot of lumber yards and they are out stock of poplar for a project I’m doing, but Lowes has plenty of good stuff and the actual 3/4 Maple ply is 9 layers and yes thin on the maple but straight and cabinet stain grade after a light sanding. Maybe it’s New England but I’m thinking the box stores have so much clout with the wholesalers they are buying up the lumber? BTW, the lumber yard had ply at $160/sheet compared to the $54/sheet I paid. Shop around, look at the wood based on your great advice and keep up the great work.

I want to start with some better Plywood and make myself cabinets for my shop to organize it etc. I figure that is a pretty good start for continuing to learn. I don't see myself doing it full time but rather doing it enough to pay for some equipment etc. I looked up a few places and hope they are decent. Their websites generally suck though. So hopefully I can find a few places. There is a Rockler and a Woodcraft here but they seemed expensive too. Just need to figure out what decent plywood cost to start with.

It gets even more complex with plywood. Number of plies, whether it's lumber core, etc., etc. Last time I bought a 3/4" sheet of birch veneer at Lowe's, the veneer was paper thin (less than 1/64 rather than the usual 1/32), which is easily sanded through if you're not careful. Also, it's not 3/4" anymore either. Now they're shorting you by up to a 1/16" on the thickness. Last time I bought from a local yard, I could still get the good stuff.

Most of it is actually metric thicknesses now I think (12mm, 18mm etc). Since they don't want to be inaccurate, rather than risk confusing people by forcing to be aware that other measurements systems exist, they use inch fractions in 1/32 increments that someone apparently decided are less confusing. So you have to sit there for 30 seconds thinking "19/32... that's 1/32 less than 20/32, which is 10/16... oh, it's 5/8"

If I was going to build a boat and wanted pre-formed lumber for the hull, I know where to go. Fortunately, there are a few places to buy quality hardwood and furniture grade plywood, but they aren't as friendly or helpful to private customers as the folks at the Hardwood Centre. They treat commercial customers who are buying truckloads at a time very well, but they don't have much patience for the hobbyist shopping for a full slab of 8/4 walnut or cherry.

Try searching within a 100-150mi radius or so and once you discount all the big box stores you get hardwood lumber liquidators. Awesome if you're trying to put down thin hw laminate flooring. Try calling local mills, they're not interested unless you're buying entire flatbed trailers (18ft) full and that's a 'residential' customer, otherwise it's semi's. The only other place I found was strictly a pinewood dealer. The prices on hardwood aren't as great as many of these places make it out to be. I work as a lumber associate for a home depot in Canada. A cart of warped plywood left in an aisle is likely meant to be marked down for a discount (thats why it's not on the shelf). That commentary is what spurred me to comment and put myself on blast as it were, as it bothered me that it was implied all our plywoods look like that. They are typically 'top' boards taken from the top of a lift, or boards that sat on the shelf for awhile and went squirrelly. Totally still usable, seeing as you will fasten these at minimum on 24" centres and more often on 16" centres. Making it seem like that's the standard quality we have on the shelf? Not accurate and not very nice. We cull as much as we can as often as we can, but we are often preoccupied with reloading shelves (studs, fence boards, deck boards, concrete products, drywall muds etc) or on the saw (because customers don't want to invest in renting or buying a tool outright). So speaking as someone who works in these aisles, take the state of our dept with a grain of salt. We're responsible for most of the traffic in customers going through the building, we support 100% of the departments in the building, we've got 2-3 staff if we're lucky (and often we're not) and that 0.1% of customers who really want to ruin our day can REALLY ruin our day. No, I don't think you should shop at our stores for really nice high grade lumber, but if you choose to please remember we are just a retail store trying to satisfy as large a portion of the construction industry as we can, we're no specialty lumber store :) But if you happen to come across something that isn't 100% and we agree it wont sell for full price, we often will offer a discount. Just ask!
@Dafnessific
@Dafnessific Рік тому
HD Canada may be different. Around here it's hard to find a single board or sheet that isn't warped in one dimension or another, or damaged in the construction lumber section -- and even the hobby boards often have some nasty twists or cupping in the longer lengths. Also most stores' RAS is either out of order or the one guy allowed to operate it is lurking in some twilight zone and ignoring the intercom.
@Major-Dan
@Major-Dan Рік тому
@@Dafnessific Perhaps that is true at the store in your area, but it is not the case at the three that are near me. I don't buy hardwood at the HD for the very reasons presented in this video, however, the staff at the stores I go to very courteous and helpful. Are there times when it is busy and I have to wait my turn? You bet. If you find a place where service is instantaneous, ask yourself why they aren't very busy?
