A bear nicknamed "The Boss" has gained fame for being the biggest, baddest grizzly in Alberta's Bow Valley.
Also known as Bear No. 122, the furry creature is increasingly rare to see as it gets older and hibernation season approaches.
Heather Yourex-West explains how "The Boss" earned that reputation, and how a photographer stumbled upon the animal twice in the same day.

Grizzlies are not as intimidating how everyone likes to think. I’ve seen mother mooses chase them off, small dogs, and even 170 pound pumas. Polar bears are what you need to watch out for, they are 100% carnivores and can track your sent from 32KGs or 20 miles away and are almost always hungry.

@@S3MTX An old bear who has never caused trouble for humans, but is a survivor & successful hunter, is exactly the kind of animal you want to live on. If you genuinely thought that there were too many bears around, or that the local population was causing trouble for humans, you’d be looking to take out the younger bears who are trying to expand their range. When you take out the matriarchs & patriarchs of a population, you destabilize the hierarchy. Old giants keep balance. That goes for many, many different species. Siberian tigers can weight up to 900 lbs supposedly, grizzlies up to 700. I mean it would take a damn big tiger to kill a bear that big, but very possible if not likely. We'd go to the "cafeteria wet dump" on Windfall, Alberta in the evening to watch the bears feed. Then about sunset all the bears would leave, usually more than fifty. THEN the Big Boy would walk in and have the place to himself. He was at least 40% larger than the SECOND largest bear. Then we kids would play in the dry dump for the pipeline, light fires, dump stuff, the kinds of things you'd get arrested for in the big city. Good time, Windfall.

I'm like 95% certain I saw this bear once about 9ish years ago when I lived in Banff. I was out on a hike a bit west of town, and I was watching a herd of caribou in a meadow a bit below me, probably about 600m or so away. Suddenly a few of them poked their heads up on a swivel for a few seconds then bolted, causing the whole herd to take off. About a minute later this hulking beast of a bear walked out from the taller grass near the treeline across the meadow and started heading towards a small pond there. This would have been in the first week of October, so I imagine he was bulking up before his hibernation, but boy was I glad to be upwind of him. I didn't stick around long - didn't have a camera that could get a shot from that distance and I didn't want to risk being bear food lol, back to town I went.

My right of passage you might say was being left for weeks tending the pack string on my step fathers guide hunting outfit in NE BC between hunts! The year I was 17 several hunts in succession were canceled not an issue for the business as the hunts are prepaid the cooks wranglers and guides are not! After a couple of weeks in one of the heaviest populate grizzly territories in Canada my fly camp up against the end of a steep hill that the horses and mules were hobbled below they inevitably found away around or through and headed the 30 plus miles to a pasture we kept for them! I did chase for a few days and were the trail intercepted a logging road a managed to flag a hunter and ask him to rely the message I had lost the string of animals! Back at camp the next morning I was greeted by a young grizzly sat across the cut line from me while I prepares and ate breakfast! That became a bit of a ritual over the next week interacting with that bear. My step father eventually showed up in a brand new Ford bronco the level of hell I expected wasn't as severe as I thought until my new friend seemed to take objection to my dressing down and appeared crossed the cut line and headed right for that shiny new bronco! My step father starts by asking quietly at first for my saddle gun then I was using a 308 browning lever action. Eventually I retrieved it from under my bed roll San the clip! The grizzly must of been itchy for he had made a good bit of work on most every corner of that bronco special attention given the mirrors! The bellowing from my stepfather was picking up pretty good when I handed him my clip I reminded him we had hunters coming that paid to hunt grizzly how would he explain killing one that had little fear of humans an easy hunt! He did let loose a few rounds over the grizzlies head that bear just turned its head towards us as it slowly padded away! We never did successfully hunt that bear even though I was brought out on the guide camp when that bear was targeted the hunters and guides would go out and I would spend most of the day with the bear in camp but mostly only if I was alone all but once members of the old TV program WRK in Cincinnati were coming hunting the location of that camp was close to my fly tent were i first encountered this grizzly, with the gear being unloaded and everyone just settling in along comes the grizzly right into the center of camp he stood up let out a small growl and smacked his Jaws, the whole of group had dove into the wall tents no one at that point had unpacked a gun! Shortly after they started logging back in that stretch of forest and thar grizzly was run over by a logging truck! Many years later my stepfather is dying from pancreatic cancer a last trip to a favorite hunting spot thus one had a hunting cabin on it the territory had changed hands many times and as such the territory is only open to residents of BC now due some malfeasance with later owners and characters! My stepfather was given special use of two cabins this particular one was of a special memory of good times and good hunts to which we went for a last pack trip! The late afternoon with oil and gas industry making the trek much closer we arrived at the cabin noticing flagging ribbon that indicated the area was soon to be logged. My stepfather took while taking inventory and setting about which tasks needed to be done the horses and mules were tied to the hitching post still when a very old and grizzled grizzly sat in the meadow outside the cabin lifting almost waving his arm seemingly greeting us but more my stepfather! My stepfather and this bear seemed to have a bond when the bear finally got up and lumbered away my stepfather exclaimed that bear has to be in his 40's! He said to me my right of passage was left back in these woods running pack strings to remote farms and hunting when that bear and I much like you and your bear when you were 17 I can't believe he's still alive but in his shape I think this is his last year and it was as well my stepfather last year! That was in 2006 I haven't been back to the cabin since!

Wait so the bear didn't actually get hit by a logging truck? Also what was actually happening with your job in the begining? You were a 17 year old watching the gear and tending the mules?
