The Tesla Plaid is one of the fastest production EVs ever made and if you wanna beat it in an EV only race, you got two options: You could cheat on a technicality, or you could spend $2.4M dollars on a Rimac Nevera, the only production EV that’s faster. But what if there’s another way? A third option. Instead of buying a car to beat the Plaid, what if you built your own EV - and you did it on the cheap? Homemade EVs have been running faster 1/4-mile times than the Plaid for years, and many of those cost far less to build. So, there you go: the answer is “built not bought!” What’s the catch? Let’s find out!

John Metric is a friend of mine and the man is an Engineering genius, he literally designed the car from ground as well as designed his own batteries specifications and all and had a company build them for him. He also built an EV Fiero that was stupid fast as well. You guys should definitely interview him and do a story on his adventures in EV development.

The actual cheapest way is a mid 2000s or 2010s superbike. Although it’s drastically more dangerous, it is a lot cheaper. When you’re going that fast, everything is dangerous anyways

My first car was a Pontiac 6000. I'd imagine going 0-60 in 1.5 sec. in that thing would cause the doors to fly off. Still, if the exterior remained stock, that would be a bad-ass sleeper conversion build.

The $30,000 was about right. $7000 for the miata with roll cage. , $5000 for the motors, and the rest was battery and controllers and some for tires. We had about a 50-75mile range in that car if we only went from the house to the local bar. It made 1335ftlbs to the tire in the dyno. With double overdrive trans. The build details are on f-book.

2:07 incorrect, they are Permanent Magnet - Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMSRM), they are NOT induction motors. The original Model S' had an induction motor, but was later superseded by the PMSRM motor type used for the first time in the Model 3, which has greater efficiency compared to the induction motor type. The OG Model S' had a tendency to go into thermal limp mode, because the motor was getting too hot due to the worse efficiency, limiting the motor power after some thrashing at a track for example.

Everytime I think of combustion to EV conversion, I think of the Type R (2017 I think) that had it's rear wheels converted to electric wheel hubs making it _"AWD"_ and a hybrid. Haven't heard much about it since, but it was a cool thing that could be turned into a kit for other Hondas/FWD vehicles like Golfs to become "part time AWD"

I'd love to see a video on the physics behind two engine cars(like the twin-engine gti, not hybrids). It would be interesting to know if it is actually as effective as a single engine with double the power.

not an engineer (yet) but i would expect that it would allow more efficient transfer of power to the wheels because there would be less loss of power through the transmission, differential, etc.

You can’t. Expect to spend $50-80k minimum to make a useable EV conversion that will beat a plaid. Ford’s electric motor is about $4000, but everything else is what costs the money. Batteries, BMS, inverter, wiring, fabrication, new brakes, new brake system, electric power steering, new suspension to account for the extra weight. This is just touching the surface.

While Ford hasn’t really impressed me with an EV, they are absolutely changing the game by offering crate “engines” like the E-luminator. Now you can get an electric motor from Ford and use it in your project. Now imagine if Tesla would supply parts like motors and batteries.

7:20 gen3 does 60 amps highest according to car , model 3 takes 48 highest long range only. But model s 100kw battery does go to 50 amps to 60 amps depending on model years.

Couple points, we did 8.9 in Assault and Battery back in 2013. We could do 9.2/9.1 five times a night while the Teslas we raced backed then needed 4hours to cool back down after a 11second run. Not sure how many times a plaid can consecutively do it’s figure. we are now working on a 6sec car a GT40. We will be doing it in DOT tires. Back then it was 2000Amps to each of two motors so technically I refer to it as 4000 motor amps. Peak was about 175Volts.

I have wondered if putting a heat exchange pump system in for the radiator would be better for cooling. I know that there would have to be a way to cool the oil too unless we leave the oil cooler in the system.

I wanna buy an old pickup with a dead powertrain and covert it to a real EV with real range. Like ground up rebuild of everything but the frame and interior. Take up all that juicy space in that separate frame from the body for a home made skateboard, use under the hood for any cooling and controllers needed, as well as housing the inverters and charging system, and then having an EV that makes absolutely no sense but is awesome because its a pickup from 2002 with a full functioning long range EV system

The ‘electrical converters’ you mentioned more than a few times aren’t exactly crazy tech. The rectifier (AC to DC) is basically just a diode pack, and the inverter portion (DC to AC) is a very common (in industrial applications) device called a VFD or ASD. Well, more accurately the inverter is actually half of a VFD. Anyway, they are used all the time to control electric motor speed, although usually only between 25-60hz because most motors don’t like to go slower than that, and most devices aren’t rated for a higher input speed than 1800rpm (60hz) in North America. The really impressive thing about the Tesla engineering is getting those motors to spin 20,000rpm, as well as be able to creep through a parking lot at low speed. It’s hard to make things to withstand that range of speed and load conditions, and be quiet and civilized. If you run a regular squirrel cage 3 phase motor below 25hz, they usually make a very strange but grating racket, and have heating issues. The solutions to those problems are really incredible.

easy way to beat a tesla plaid is to take a coyote throw boost at it with a 6 r80 or t400 put it in a foxbody. bang 15-20k you beat the plaid . Or Mustang gt or v8 f150. you can buy either for 30k and 30k of upgrades you can beat a plaid. Think about it. Stock sealed coyotes with boost can make 1200whp and run 7s (mustang gt) 8s (f150) no pistons no heads no cams. awd f150 is a killer even on the streets. think about it you can build both a 8-9 sec f150 and a 7-8 sec mustang gt for the price of a tesla plaid. or a 8.4 sec gt500 like the one that just ran that with stock dct.Thats faster than the Record demon which basically only had its chassis left. And is only a DRAG CAR. gt500 runs within a second of the Ferrari f8 tributo huracan evo and porsche gt3RS around a track. you can buy a gt500 for 75-95k but 15k in minor upgrades and your track car can make 1200whp and run low 9s. oh and you can still drive them on the street and have full interior.

Yes but the Miata was using Series Wound DC motors and those usually end up needing rebuilt often and many times they just blow because they don't handle high RPM well. But they do give the most bang for the buck. Brushed DC motors can handle high currents to a point. As for using Tesla parts you need a way to control the induction motors because you won't be using the mother board of the Tesla in your build with a wrecked Tesla. Be sure you use batteries that can deliver the current needed.

and dont forget, the tesla has the perfect moment. pre-heating the engine for 11 minutes before launching. which makes it one of the slowest 0-60 vehicles out there with 11 minutes and 1,99 seconds

Rimac Navera will still beat the plaid in the quater mile. Plaid did it in 9.25s at 152mph, Navera record set by Matt at Carwow did it in 8.62s at 171.7mph. So the plaid really ain't all it's cracked up to be even if it's 0-60 is 0.1s faster than the Navera

I been wondering for years if the faster direct current from massive capacitors could help delivery more power in moments that need a juice dump to accelerate really quickly? That way you have the balance of even longer battery from less voltage droop caused by the sometimes heavy vampirisms of the motors. All while keeping the battery health stable for longer, and getting a more responsive throttle at any moment than the batteries could ever provide.
