I enjoyed this show much more than Castlevania. The pacing felt better and writing felt better. I found the characters more likeable as well. The world building also felt more believable in DOTA. Something that bugged me about Castlevania is it felt like it was trying to be edgier than it needed to be, or the writing was trying to be smarter than it was. Something that grated at me personally in Castlevania was how on the nose the religion bashing was. We get it the writer is a religion hating atheist who knows nothing of the religions he's criticizing. The Catholic Church practically invented the modern concept of science and condemned witch hunts even considering belief in witches borderline heresy. Yet in the show the Church burns Dracula's wife as a witch because she practices science. I'm an atheist and even I find religion bashing like this annoying, especially when it's also historically inaccurate. It's also more annoying when you know that in the actual game series the Catholic Church were the ones who sent the good guys on their missions. In DOTA religion causes a war central to the shows conflict, but it's not so one sided, or on the nose about how you should feel. They just show you how the religious beliefs of both sides leads to actions that spiral into all out war. The show doesn't feel like it's telling you how to feel about religion, but is simply showing you a situation and you form an opinion about it. Many of the characters are very religious and have to come to terms with their religions. So you never get an author mouthpiece diatribe about how religion is bad.

As I said it isn't really a criticism of the show, but a personal gripe of mine. For some this won't bother them at all. As to the Catholic Church pioneering modern science. The Catholic Church developed a doctrine that promoted scientific research. If God created the Universe than by understanding the Universe one could better understand and serve God. The Catholic Church has historically been one of the biggest financiers of scientific research because of this. Prior to Christianity in the Western world it was considered unmanly and pointless to actually bother to understanding the natural world beyond practical necessity. It's why the Greeks and Romans invented the steam engine and mechanical computers and didn't do anything with them beyond novelty. Agricultural technology barely advanced during the Roman Empire as well. It's also this Church doctrine that allowed the Christian World to become more technologically advanced than their Islamic counterparts. Which by the 12th century came to believe all you needed was the Quran and that trying to understand God's design was an affront to God. All you needed to know about a naturally occurring phenomenon was that God willed it. Even in the famous case of Galileo the church didn't punish him for his Heliocentric theory. They punished him for his presentation of the theory. Galileo considered his research infallible truth and to the Church only god is infallible. This is what got him in trouble. It especially didn't help that he pissed off the Pope. The Pope helped financed his research, but requested he present both the Heliocentric and Geocentric theories. Galileo wrote a book with two characters presenting their argument for each side. The Geocentrist came off as buffoonish and his name was even Simplicito which means simpleton in Italian. The Pope recognized Simplicito using a lot of his own arguments. So you can imagine the Pope wasn't too happy with Galileo. While what happened to Galileo was wrong the story of his persecution is not quite what most people think. If you want to criticize the Catholic Church for things like it's handling of sexual abuse scandals go right ahead. It has done some messed up stuff in it's past worthy of criticism, but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge the good it has done and it's contributions to society. Nor should we perpetuate lies about it.

English voice actors (or other languages) also often try to imitate japanese voice actor sounds or their high voices and try to be cute but it doesn't work cuz the language isn't made for that shit and it just ends up sounding cringe. Just imo tho.. Cartoons on the other hand work just fine with English. Maybe it's cuz the animation style developed together with the origin country's language, or I'm just used to it but I don't think so cuz I saw a lot of non-japanese dubs before and after trying japanese ones.
