I agree everything you said. I am a black immigrant man from ethiopia here living in canada for the last 30 years and I have never been discriminated by anyone . All the racism nonsense... all this insane word play identitarian garbage ... far more than just that... so much it’s hard to keep up but I have.. ehhh I’m so fed up... Douglas said sarcastically, "If you thought the American world order wasn't to your taste, you'll love the Chinese one." I was a Chomsky-loving anti-imperialist for decades, but I've come to believe that the sentiment that Douglas is expressing here--when China takes over as global hegemon, people will realize how good we all had it under the Pax Americana--is entirely correct.

Chomsky should have stuck to linguistics. Seriously. He has been so upset by the American hegemons who have done bad things, he seems to have always viewed every other entity through rose colored glasses. It is just astounding to me that he could say one word in favor of socialists and communists after the Gulag Archipelago was published, and after the real news about the horror of Maoist China came to light. It shows that no one is above incredible myopic bias once they have a world view that "works" for them personally.

Our education authorities have recently downgraded History by combining it with Geography and not insisting it be studied in Secondary School. I would argue that the study of humanities such as History and Geography are essential to understanding the conflicts that bedevil our world. Random acts of violence will occur when anger takes over from rigourous academic formation and education which needs to address all sides of a political argument or point of view. I sectional interests get to relate the story of our past lives then hatred and conflict are inevitable. Professional detached and cool heads need to prevail in this situation. History needs to be taught at school.

@Marcus Lorenzo perhaps describing him as a mere journalist was a bit unfair as he's also a writer/ poltical commentator. Not sure he pretends to be anything more than any of the above, and certainly not a philosopher of any description. Chomsky is a philosopher and academic, so don't really see the comparison there. What he undeniably is, however, is perceptive, and excellent at analysing and eloquently exposing the faults inherent in *some* left-wing thinking and action. He's one of the few voices on the right that I pay any attention to, even if I don't always agree with him. It's always worthwhile listening to a counter-narrative and being self-critical in my opinion. I've never seen him drum-up hatred of minorties so will have to plead ignorance there. From what I've seen of him over the years, his arguments tend be reasonable and often difficult to dismiss. You'll seldom see him lose a debate.

In the USA, all is falling apart, and even my neighbors have turned their backs to me, because I refused to join the violent acts committed in downtown, Tucson in the name of BLM. Black lives do matter, as do all others, but we cannot win over this mindset, until we stop addressing each other by skin color & stop seeing with tunnel vision & acting in violence. We need to see with the eyes of law and fairness. Reason has left the minds of many here & I frankly feel the need to move back to Japan, where I used to live & violence was practically non-existent.

@Divinity X I agree that we must stand up to oppressive regimes and tactics that pick out people because of their physical appearances. Believe me, my photo might appear as if I haven't been through it, but I have. I used to have severe scoliosis & get physically bullied nearly daily. Then there were the years I lived with my Native American partner when we would get pulled over more than others & get reamed with discriminatory & bullying tactics ... yes, both of us. Now in my forties, I have seen and felt my share of gun violence too. If we are to stand up to an oppressive regime, be they police, government or other, we need to do so together & without hate & avoid violent acts of "communication" as much as possible. It only splits us apart. Violence doesn't make us stronger. I have felt my unfair share of violence over the last 23 years in the US and am tired of fighting back, when I know that it most likely only leads to more violence. If the protest is peaceful, I am all for it, but not if it calls for criminal acts. I have been on the receiving end of these criminal acts and for what? I did not hurt or take from anybody & I worked my back off for 23 years to have what I have. We cannot take on the attitude that there will be casualties in these protests and accept it. Just put yourself in the shoes of those business owners who scraped up every penny and nickel for 30-40 years to keep their business, and then lost it in one night because someone threw a Molotov cocktail through their window. They don't have spare change in the amounts of $100K to start over again. We must find a solution peacefully & lawfully. How do we want our grandchildren to remember us?

@Divinity X I understand your frustrations. I feel them too. Believe me. I have left Education after 23 years, because I saw too much corruption there, and couldn't make a dent with other teachers who were frustrated along with me. Yet, they were too timid to stand up. Civil unrest is sometimes necessary, but the violence we have witnessed in recent months in the U.S. is so frightening, especially for a single woman like me. I actually considered getting a gun again, after nearly 20 years of not owning one. I just hope that people do not lose sight and I hope that they don't start to hurt one another nationwide, instead of defend and imprisoning the perpetrators. It has already happened in too many places. Let's hope we can solve this without more senseless injuries. Stay safe.

Just historically that would be a blind assumption. Let alone how a pandemic would attack the different economic levels of our society and systemic issues. Then the "leaning a bit less on the differences between us" just blows me away at the lack of insight. Really? He should be protected for saying stuff like that? If he actually wanted us to come together as a society maybe we need to address those differences first, right? Otherwise you're assuming those differences don't matter because YOU PERSONALLY aren't effected by them. Which is another of his dumb assumptions. His "critique" of BLM is largely made up of distractions... "there was this one case SIX years ago where he lunged for the gun"... and then to imply BLM consider him a martyr!!!! FFS. He then says nobody thinks black lives don't matter. Are you f'ing kidding me? For somebody who claims to have followed them quite closely he certainly hasn't been paying attention and still remains insanely ignorant about them. Anyway enjoy your "legend". Or yeah better put him on the front line. See how long he'd last.

@@BrawsonProductions True, but we need White unity, not individualism. That's the only way to confront this from a position of power. Everything else boils down to begging them to "stop and think what they are doing" or something equally ineffectual that Murray would propose. He never talks about solutions. And he certainly never mentions where all this is coming from, i.e. who is the ideological vanguard of the left (and has always been). Trotsky, a.k.a Lev Davidovich Bronstein. Thunderstruck I would disagree that ‘white unity’ is what the solution is here. Rather than stoop to the level of the left with this Marxist doctrine that individuals are categorised on race rather than a class system. We need more nationalism, less self deprecating identity politics and ‘white guilt’ displayed by the left, and frankly less pandering to this ridiculous notion that if you’re not with them then you’re against them. The need for healthy political debate and discourse is now more that ever! An environment has been created perhaps due to social media that if you oppose anything they say, you’re shunned as a racist/nazi. This fear of people to speak out at the risk of being publicly smeared is creating a wimpy, soft nation who are now having to ban TV shows because they’re ‘offensive’. The moment political discourse begins to break down and only one side is being heard due to censorship - we’re all fucked!

@bobby sternlicht Friend, you are brainwashed. The US is the most prosperous, privileged & egalitarian nation in history, despite having a past (like ALL nations) that involves misogyny & r@ce-based divisions. I say this as a mixed woman of color who's worked all over the world: we are better off in the US. Are there events in which a person's prejudices might impact their actions? Of course. Should we continue working to improve our society to make it more just? Always. But to focus on the negatives blinds us to reality. This is the great danger of social media - it blows up a few incidents & shows that to the world. Far more police are sh0t by criminals than criminals sh0t by police. Our police are tasked with maintaining law & order in a highly armed society, so when a criminal resisting arrest reaches into his pocket or car, they must assume he'll raise that arm in a hail of bu11ets, so they must neutralize that threat. Whether or not he's armed is irrelevant to their justified use of force, yet the media immediately runs the headline "unarmed man sh0t by c0ps!" In my city, NYC, persons of color commit 97% of h0micides, so it's impossible to eliminate r@cial disparity in policing until we change that. Our communities know this & our black leaders in the Bronx have made clear that we do NOT want our police defunded. NYPD is mostly minority cops, anyway, & has a higher approval rating than our mayor or teachers union. Our police save lives & prevent terr0rist attacks. The Marxist lie of BLM does not reflect the views of actual bl@ck folks in our country. The DNC funds BLM riots in election years like 2016 & 2020 to rile up society & increase turnout of bl@ck voters. They do this while simultaneously telling us, as Biden has "the other side wants to put bl@ck folks in chains!" & "If you don't vote for me, you ain't bl@ck." The manipulation is embarrassing. If you doubt this, note that the website antifa (dot) com is owned by Biden campaign & redirects to his election site which requests donations. The DNC is literally bailing out rioters, advertising the riots & fundraising from them. Then, Biden tells America that he'll stop the rioting if we elect him. Of course he will. After the election, whoever wins will put the remaining protestors in jail. He'll say he "established law & order" & claim that as a success of his presidency. Don't let yourself be used by BLM. Don't buy into a narrative that doesn't empower you, that says we lack privilege & are unable to better our place in society without government handouts. More & more of us are waking up, & that is why the bl@ck vote has swung 30% in the direction of conservatives in recent months. Older persons of color vote largely out of fear, bc some can recall Jim Crow. But even they are starting to see that the Constitutional amendments & equal rights given to us are permanent & nobody wants to take them away. We need to move on from voting based on skin tone & stop letting ourselves be manipulated

There are many that support the grass roots movement but not the organisation. There are also many that support the protests but not the rioting. Making these kind of grand generalisations about people with a particular ideology is the kind of identity politics that Murray speaks out against. I'm a supporter of the BLM movement and I listened to the talk. I agreed with some things and disagreed with others. I haven't read his book but I am completely open to it. As someone who considers himself on the left regarding most social and economic issues, I wouldn't for instance say that everyone who supports tuition fees is a cold blooded, sociopath. This kind of language is divisive and untrue.
@matsfreedom
@matsfreedom 3 роки тому
@@ollies246 Nobody in America denies that "black lives matter", so the entire premise for BLM's movement is a diversion. The "peaceful" protesters support the riots by default. Virtually none of them are speaking out against the rioting and looting. BLM supporters are defacto supporters of a Marxist movement, and are clueless of the actual "cause". BLM's leaders are self proclaimed Marxists, are they not? They are angry, race baiting thugs, no different than ANTIFA. Their public comments are obvious proof, and their core doctrine, found right on their website, denotes their distain for American values. Liberals who support the Democrat platform support ultra high taxes, elimination of fossil fuels, open borders, free health care (even for illegal immigrants), free education for all, universal basic income, elimination of our 1st and 2nd amendment rights, indefinite enforcement of mask mandates (among many other social mandates), defunding of police departments, empowerment of radical organizations, destruction of historical monumemts, and post-birth abortion. I've left some of their insane positions out, no doubt.The Democrat Party has become radicalized. It takes an honest person 30 seconds to realize this. The party is so disconnected that their lead candidate is an elderly man with dementia. To deny this is irresponsible. Not a single, viable, old-school liberal wants anything to do with the leadership of the party, and so the radicals roll over them. I'm seasoned enough to remember when Democrats were pro-American, and pro-Constitution. Those days are gone. Every city in America that is currently on fire from rioting, is run by Leftist Democrats. Every rioter, looter, and protester in those cities is a Democrat voter. They seek only destruction and offer no solutions. Why? Because they are rage filled and cannot think clearly enough to offer any. They are "useful idiots" for a cause that is designed to destroy the entire country, starting with Portland and coming to a town near you. You feel that the "cause" is about racism. My point was that you see it on both the left and the right and it does nothing but close down discussion and push people away from your argument. Murray is so right about this. I do take your point thought. Perhaps tuition fees wasn't the best example. You could use support for the war in Iraq instead. I wouldn't say that everyone who supported the war in Iraq was a cold blooded, sociopath. There are those who might, but I find it nonsensical and simply untrue. You're making an argument, using reason and I whole heartedly support you in doing so. I'm aware that the BLM movement is founded by self proclaimed Marxists but I wasn't aware that they are responsible for death. I came across Douglas Murray a couple of years ago. He is an excellent orator and explains his position on issues in terms which us "laymen" can understand. He is articulate, clearly educated to a high level and does not at any time, use his being gay as relevant to his arguments. He is a reasonable, calm and positive speaker - he adopts a view and sticks to it, having considered the evidence. I like him a lot. It is people such as Douglas who should be our MPs....not the bunch of carpet-baggers and snake-oil salesmen/women we have infesting the Palace of Westminster at this time. He is what we used to call "a good man" and is truly deserving of that label, in contrast to the ideological cretins we are shown as being such. I have no wish to comment on the politics or the issues he discusses - he says it all for me and in clear terms.

So essentially... the people who don’t read his books should read his books, and the people who do read his books, well it wasn’t really as important... I think this is why Jake Taylor reacted like that - You could say the same thing about literally any kind of useful knowledge: the people who don’t know should know and the people who do, well they aren’t as benefitted by it. It’s a very confusing and pointless point if you break it down. People who read are typically smarter than those who don’t, so it’s not surprising that people who read his books lean towards agreeing with him. The point of books is to inform those who are open to the ideas, we don’t expect it to convert those who are not open to ideas. The problem is people being close-minded and ignorant to information, not the fact that books are being written that they choose not to read. But I do agree with your point: people who don’t read should read.

@vaxdatex8540
@vaxdatex8540 3 роки тому
@@BlurryDays I do read his and many other books. It wasn't meant as interpreted. Maybe I didn't state the point in the best way possible. The reaction however shows another issue which is that in today's society negative intentions are assumed from the get go instead of assuming that the other person means well. Resorting to immediately calling somebody/ something stupid or other things doesn't solve anything nor does it contribute to constructive discourse. Asking questions with real intent of gathering more information would. But that is work and one has to overcome ego which is probably our biggest enemy. I'm not saying nobody should read. Even if you take the, apparently poor worded, statement about those who do read some books are just confirming what they already though, that in itself is not a bad thing either. The tendency, especially online, seems to pick out fragments of something and then take offense while ignoring the more important part. Those who should read books like Murray's, or Graeber's, or Hegel, or Kant, or Plato, or any other works don't.

The cop was following departmental guidelines on how to deal with an uncooperative retainee like Floyd. That has been completely overlooked in such a rush to judgement.
@Th3Kingism
@Th3Kingism 3 роки тому
And Floyd also was likely suffering from the effects of a drug overdose, if you watch the body cam footage he says repeatedly that he can't breathe WAY before the cops ever lay him on the ground and he also asks the police to lay him down. In a few shots you can also see white foam coming from Floyd's mouth, another sign of a drug overdose. His actual cause of death was likely the OD on top of the stress of the situation and possibly heart problems.
@AnnaLVajda
@AnnaLVajda 3 роки тому
Yeah the cops do need some better guidelines but they are not always out of line. Floyd was cuffed and not armed and he just kneed him to death with 4 of them I think they could have managed an arrest they did not really care. It is good they were arrested. Look at Australia now though they are arresting people even a pregnant woman for a facebook post. It's not just blacks is the issue.

At minute 6:41, where he says, "where is the opposition that says "Black lives don't matter?". I actually think this is the point that BLM is trying to make, the opposition is everywhere in social, economic, and environmental injustice! We live in a system that literally says "poor lives" don't matter. We should all be engaging in a process to remove injustic from our society, not undermine and dismiss people who feel strongly enough about injustice to get on the street and protest. For example, instead of dividing ourselves, why don't we all get together and demand voter and election reform? Starting with a maximum 100 quid limit to individual/institutional donations to political parties or election campaigns. That would be a good start.
