What do Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) reveal about the nature of life, death and the continuity of consciousness - and about who we are, at our core? How have these experiences transformed the lives of people and shaped their attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities? What insights can we draw from these captivating first-hand accounts and decades of scientific research-on how to live with more meaning and fulfillment, develop more compassion for our fellow beings, and make the best of our remaining time on our planet?
Find out from Dr. Bruce Greyson, one of the world’s leading medical experts of NDEs and Professor Emeritus Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia, in conversation with Dr. Hitendra Wadhwa on Intersections Podcast.

I'm almost 63 now but around 1994 I had what is called a lucid dream (not a NDE) of a very bright intense light with golden edges. I had either the thought or felt that all the great Masters and teachers were behind this light. Then it was explained to me that God is both light & love & that those 3 things (God,light, love) were interchangeable but all 3 ment the same thing. So when you speak of God, you speak also of light and love, or you can change this anyway you like, they are all the same. This light I saw was for me, unconditional love, extraordinary dream or vision. Some have told me it sounds like a NDE but I had no medical issue , it happened because I had asked what is the most powerful force in the universe, and this was my answer, I've not been able to repeat this experience for myself and it was very real too me. I thought I would share this with you're readers and hope you find it useful

NDE. I had a cardiac arrest in January 2022. I was revived two (2) times after receiving the defibrillator and chest compressions twice. The interesting thing that confuses the medical staff is that my heart is healthy no damage no blockages nothing. My elders (culture) say it’s a spiritual initiation a Death Ceremony. I woke up with increased knowledge of creation. The Dreaming we call it in our language Budjeraam (creation stories of love) I have a desire now to learn metaphysics astrology etc. It’s a calling that came to collect my people believe highly in the spiritual world

The 'black void' is exactly what happened to me in Feb 2012 Saturday aged 30. I was there in this black void/space with no pain, no anxiety etc just there neutral, not scared not happy just observing with vision... And to my right was this multi coloured energy of love, beauty and above all WISDOM pumping out the feeling of wisdom to me which overrided the love and beauty. I can't explain how, what or why but it was the energy of wisdom which was alive and all knowing. It was beautiful. How can the thought of wisdom be alive with energy and feeling? I never contimplated wisdom in my life beforehand. Anyway after that I then had my visitation from my loved one who passed away two months prior. Thanks

The eloquence in his speech is amazing. He is deeply analytical, and yet even being that way he is able to step outside what he was trained in and can see the validity of people’s experiences. The fact that this man has put decades of work into something he knew would put his academic career in peril potentially… that is amazing. A good man, and I wish I could meet him. So good. It was a comfort to hear more of the after effects of the NDE. I had mine in 1986. I live in South Africa, and was invited to share my NDE with the Spiritual Church. Dead silence. I left with my tail between my legs. But I love reading about what happens post NDE. I never knew that my life would become so meaningful. Thank you so much. I am going to buy a copy of your book as soon as possible ❤️😊

It seems a lot of people find NDE stories challenging because they don't follow their preconceived script. They really can be confounding and challenging, regardless of individual beliefs, but in equal measure they're comforting and compelling. I've undergone a massive change in perspective due to them, and I'm far from alone. The NDE community's time has come.

I had an evangelical tell me that he dismisses NDEs because too many of them are beautiful and pleasurable, and that it "spreads the false message that everyone is saved and there is no hell". They are married to their idea that some or most people have to be punished for eternity in hell, and get really angry when anyone challenges that view.

Dr. Greyson is correct. I had a spiritually transformative experience/after death communication/near death experience/out of body experience in 2017. I wish I could speak with him. Mine was sudden and unexpected in the middle of the day and I was not close to death (at least to my knowledge) at the time. I struggle with it because it seems a combination of these things. I wasn’t in an accident or having surgery or on drugs or in any type of life threatening situation yet it came out of the blue in broad daylight. The situation presented itself to me. Also - When I was 7 years old, I got brainfreeze while eating ice cream and “lost consciousness” and left my body. I floated above myself and I floated over to where my parents and brother were located which was inside a building and I could hear their conversation. I floated back to my body because I thought they would come looking for me. I remember waking up and some young boy was in utter shock looking at me passed out. I never forgot that moment. Our consciousness exists outside of our physical body. When our bodies die, we still exist. We are just not in physical form. I’m 2017 my friend who passed came to me and he was in spirit form, a white ball of light in the galaxy. He took shape as the physical form so I could recognize him. I asked him where he was and he said “here. It’s fun. You’ll like it.” It was a galaxy of white balls of light flying around anywhere. I never knew that was a thing. I thought we went to Heaven. There’s no way I could have known. I felt like it was a revelation.

That is so beautiful. If I may add… many many testimonies of new age practitioners are coming out. These practitioners have stated they worked with spiritual and loving beings. Once these practitioners came to Christianity and asked these loving beings about Jesus, the beings turned evil and demonic. Satan deceives people as a spirit of light.. all I’m saying is to test the spirits. I’m not trying to downplay your experience because it was very beautiful… but, we just do not have an understanding of the other side and the deceptiveness of some spirits. They came in the form of our loved ones to try and deceive. Many mediums and former psychics have come out to testify against the deception. Be well, friend 🤍

I've been extremely skeptical of these NDE's , because I nearly died three times, and did not have similar experiences. I had emergency surgery for a Brain Aneurysm in 2002; I was helicoptered to Harbor View Hospital, in a different county from where I lived. I was stabilized and put into a coma, since the Brain Surgeon required rest from other serious surgeries he just performed. When they did the surgery on me, they nicked my cerebellum, resulting in an immediate stroke. I was immediately placed in ICU after surgery. I barely remember any of my time in ICU, so maybe I was unconscious most of the time during the 4 to 6 weeks hospitalized. Eventually, when I was tested for brain function, etc., I was asked if I had any memories of what happened to me. I did not. Today, I realized that my brain must have been alive, all the time I was in hospital. I did ask why I had no memories of the my experiences, and was told that nothing went into my long term memory. I was given a 50/50 chance of surviving, prior to surgery, per family members. I love what Dr Bruce Greyson states near the conclusion of this interview: "We get what we need, at the time." I was one of the lucky ones; I am still here - handicaps and all of my functioning brain! Of course I have many stories to tell, of what happened to me since 2002! PS. I've never been fearful of death; I seldom thought of death, prior to, or following the brain aneurysm. I did, however, have a dream that was a premonition of the possibility of death. I've been analyzing my dreams since my mid twenties, therefore, the choice not to die was made in this specific dream, now that I think about it! The dream had two parts.. The first part was of being stopped at a Guard Booth that had an entrance gate that led into a Danger Zone. I don't remember if the Guard refused me entrance, or if I chose NOT to enter. The second part of the dream I have not been able to understand - until this very moment. (No need to share.) Life is such a mysterious event, is it not?

These are changing times we live in. I have had an NDE a few years back. It wasn't a particularly pleasant experience as many others describe. For me though, my path to empathy and enlightenment had began many years before when my wife passed. I went through so many changes throughout both of these experiences. I have no choice but to try to make something positive out of them. I have learned much, but I would give it all back to have my wife again. I know I will see her one day soon. I thank my NDE for that part. The fleshy human side of me can't get there soon enough. So I do believe we experience these things to help us grow in the spirit. The faith one chooses (or none at all) doesn’t matter. Just live what you believe in an honest way. Don’t hurt people or waste time pushing your beliefs on others - that’s how hate, arguments, and wars begin. Horrible atrocities have been committed in the name of “religion” and the belief that “God” is on their side. The truth is, the Divine (aka God) is not interested in the religions of men.

During the time I was reported to be dead, I, that is "LIFE My Real Self", felt very much alive, but not in this universe, nor did I have a human body or any other type of body. I felt NO Condemnation or judgement, but only a depth of LOVE far beyond human understanding... I saw No relatives, family or friends, and no Form, except for the Presence of pure white LIGHT.

I had an OBE 13 yrs ago. During sleep paralysis. And I think it needs looked into that sleep paralysis is related to OBEs because I've had it for years and can see the room I'm in even though my eyes were closed. It's just the room is seen as more fake, like you see particles everywhere, hard to explain it's like the room is an illusion. When kids blow bubbles and you can see in that bubble as it's floating in the air, less clear a view... can't explain it. Like I am more real than my surroundings. During the OBE I saw myself on the couch after being unable to move, I tried to move..my intent was to get up. Next thing I'm looking at my body and remember thinking oh thank God I can get up, that was easy...until I realised my body was on the couch. My awareness is me, it's not my body. So the body carries the awareness.

In a world of almost constant propaganda & misinformation from every direction, this was very refreshing to accidentally come across. And other than the Bible & the most important of all to discover & believe, the Gospel message, this discussion was the most fascinating & enlightening I’ve heard on spiritual understanding as it relates to human life.

Cheers to you 2 gentlemen! With kindness, grace, and an intense but easy curiosity and depth, you both delivered a home run of a conversation. A much-needed look inward. I wish you both very well and appreciate your sharing of experience and knowledge. The way Dr. Greyson was encouraged and supported during the conversation, made for an illuminating and wonderful time. I'm so impressed! Be well!

Great stuff. There seems to be some similarities to the mystical experiences people have on psychedelics or in other altered states. The feeling of oneness with everything, the passage of time, the way you seem to get what you need or can handle. It’s a mystery just like this reality is. But it seems love is at the centre of it all. I truly believe our consciousness is immortal and this reality is some kind of a love training simulation but who knows! I’m just trying not to be afraid of death and to be a better person while I’m here. ☮️❤️

Your life is eternal. When your body no longer functions, your life is transformed to a different existence. As mortals, we suffer from a fairly primitive existence. Most people regard their consciousness as being generated by their brains. The awareness of spirit, reality, morality, etc. are not generated by the brain. Instead, the brain acts as a filter or veil shielding us from most aspects of the universal consciousness of our creator. Some have a filter that allows more of this universality into their awareness. What awaits us after the inevitable demise of our physical bodies is beyond our comprehension on this earth.

My NDE was the polar opposite of what is normally reported. No white light, no feelings of love or acceptance, no welcoming group. There are no words to describe what I experienced but it was dark, chaotic, and painful. The closest analogy I can come up with is a full on street fight with a foe I couldn’t see and didn’t understand, and it went on for an eternity. According to the machine’s record my heart was stopped. According to the doctors I fought my way back for reasons they can’t explain, and my heart started an erratic beat. I eventually ended up with a pacemaker and a constant reminder that every moment could, indeed, be my last. But, other than that, my NDE has had little impact on my world view. I have long understood that we are all a part of an evolving experience we tend to call “the cosmos”, that compassion, humility, and the search for wisdom are the things that matter. And though I found the experience of dying unpleasant in the extreme, it isn’t anything I fear. But then, I didn’t fear death before the experience. But, in any case, my NDE wasn’t anything like what appears to be common.

A note for Dr. Greyson: When I was 13 I was in a car accident where we went over a 150 foot embankment. At the top of the embankment my door was thrown open and I experienced an explosion fracture of the occipital bone. After that everything went to super slow motion. By the time I realized we were at the bottom of the embankment there was an ambulance at the top. Actual time was probably 8 minutes. This might help to explain how people can seemingly have weeks of experience in a matter of 6 or 8 minutes they were clinically dead. I was in a coma after that for two weeks and remember nothing. I don't believe we can go "nowhere" for two weeks so I am looking 55 years later for a hypnotist that might help me re-experience that time.

Wherever you were during those two weeks in a coma, maybe you were not meant to remember it. You were 13 at the time, what happen to the driver? were there others in the car?

Someone asked how long the NDE takes in "real time". I've had spiritual experience, that began as an OBE, out of body experience, and included luminous compassionate beings and a whole host of elaborate experiences typical to NDE's. I experienced eternities, multiple lifetimes, and on and on. It takes hours, if not all day, to try explain this ineffable experience. If I made a cartoon video that tried to artistically represent the experience the run time could be as much as 2 hours. My best guess is all of this took less than 4 seconds to experience.

At 23:21 Dr Greyson mentions that NDEers talk about mistakes and do not mention sins. Interestingly, the root meaning of the Hebrew word for sin means to "miss the mark" as in an archer that does not hit the bullseye. This interpretation opens up a great landscape of discussion on interpreting the bible and various church teachings about sin.

I have had many strange experiences in my 70 odd years of life that make me believe in the after life and nde's. I also experienced the contrary - after ingesting a medically prescribed drug which did not agree with me, I had several seizures. During these short episodes I had know recollection of of said event. It was like I was watching the movie of life, but when the seizure's occurred there was nothing. After recovering from the seizures it was as if nothing had happened, or maybe as if life was a movie, a part had been cut & pasted with know awareness of that episode.

Thank you so much for this. I’ve had a few near-near-death experiences (long story why I use that term) and after one in the late 90’s I remember that everything I did was experienced with crystal clarity. Like, shortly after, doing dishes at my kitchen sink while looking out the window. It was sunny and everything was sparkling and glistening as if I was viewing a fantasy world. My life felt completely different after that. Things I feared (many work related things) suddenly became like a game and/or a puzzle. The fear and worry were gone (I’d even been homeless for a period and feared losing my job and returning to homelessness). After the one in the late ‘90’s I didn’t fear death at all. And when my mother died shortly after that particular experience, I wasn’t sad for her at all, I was happy for her. What I felt bad about was my surviving Dad and how profoundly it effected him. Something I’ve fallen back on in the years since that particular experience was that every day is a bonus. It has become my mantra when going through difficult times. This and eternity - that our lives are barely a blip in relation to eternity, so live every moment as if your last.

I always feel that the term Near Death Experience is a complete misnomer. First of all it was not 'near' death as we were, what they currently call 'dead'. Secondly, as there is no such things as 'death' because clearly NDE's just went Home for a visit and came back. So can we have FUN and re-name it to a higher level of accuracy, like saying we had a Visiting Home Experience VHE or Return Trip Home RTH . Anyone any better suggestions?

That why few MD doctors experienced their own near death experience all woke up firmly believing the science must go along with spiritual world. They all pointed to our higher conscious is not created from our brain.

Modern research on Near Death Experience by Raymond moody, reincarnation memories by Ian Stevenson/Jim trucker and past lives regression by Brian Weiss all independently but coincidentally show that our consciousness survive death, we live many lives and our thoughts and actions matter in the hereafter. So be kind and helpful to others, be virtuous, meditate and cultivate ourselves to higher spiritual levels. Cheers.

Nothing happens by chance or without purpose so I'm willing to bet if you study the statistics of those that had an NDE you'll find the majority came back with major positive changes in their soul which then spiraled out to affect others and thus the world in positive ways and that without the NDE, perhaps, their life would not have turned out so positive or at a minimum their soul would not have been offered such an opportunity for intense Soul growth.

One has to experience to understand death. Your way of thinking, feeling, seeing things would be different. Fame and fortune would be secondary. "But" there would be so many PHD ers, Pandits waiting to make fun of your experience. So without making a fool of yourself, just enjoy the life the way you understand it. God Bless.
